I like how only male firelfies can fly and only male cicadas can sing...so the males have all these great abilities which nature endowed us just so we have to compete/fight each other for the female's attention. I wish to be born female in my next life...I really don't care for competition.
I hate bugs .. I wish they would go away .. just like birds and reptiles .. I wish alot of things, but I know mother nature needs all her babies to play nice.
Nonetheless, these things bug the hell out of me when I get into bed after the night shift and all I hear is them .. drives me insane!
It's funny when a Cicada flies around then hits an obstruction, then buzzes around on the floor trying to get it's bearings. I always help 'em out so that they don't get squished :D
I'm curious, I live in South Carolina where we have "13-year cicadas" This is the year we're supposed to hear them. But what's the similar noise I hear every other summer?
Thanks for uploading such a great video. You did a great job at capturing the sound of them in the trees! It seems as though the buzzing is year-round down here in Florida, lol.
Actually this video was kind of adorable along with being interesting. I've been studying this little suckers for a class and they're definitely neat little buggers.
I keep laughing at you poking at it with the forceps. You can touch them, you know, as long as you hold it by the sides and bind the wings; touching the thorax or pronotum does make them sick. :)
My dog has been eating them since he was 6 weeks old. He is only 2 now, but being born on the 4th of july, he has had three seasons under his belt now. He is bored with them this year already, I think there were just too many, its not a novelty anymore. He would put them in his mouth an let them buzz for a while. Eventually, he would crunch them. He doesn't like the dead ones, except ehen they've been reconstituted in the baby pool, then he still spits out the wings.
My daughter loves your videos (she's 2). We will definitely keep watching your stuff! By the way, the 2nd bird you zoom in on is (I think) a mourning dove, not a turtle dove. Great videos, though! Wonderful narration and information!
About every 17 years in Cincinnati we get to "enjoy" the singing. But there are different colonies that emerge in different years.
Different areas of town have singing while others are silent until theirs emerge too. When the main colony comes out in force, it is crazy loud. At least the birds get a good feast on the cicadas while it lasts.
I used to deliver pizza for Snappy Tomato Pizza years ago. They used to make us sing "Snappy Cicada Pizza" on every delivery. God how I hated that!
Where are you located? This is the only video of them on you tube that sounds like the ones we have here in Sheffield Lake Ohio. I've heard that there are plenty of different varieties.
when I was little we used to call them heat bugs cause we'de hear them during the summer when it's really hot out. Hearing them again this past summer. I haven't heard them in a long time.
that's..one group asked the other group if they want to have a sex. Then, the other group responds "no i blah blah..or yes/ blah blah.." That's what it is. Life is about having a sex
It's funny. I'm sitting in my home office listening to the NOISE of the cicadas across from my building. There is a lake and woods just across the lot. Been hearing it all week and it didn't occur to me until tonight that they were probably cicadas. A trip to YouTube confirmed it. :D
Haha. Great. I cant wait to hear them again, cause that means the snow and cold will be gone. It is 13 degrees right now and fairly nice,but.....not summer.
its kinda cool but if you live in the country they are so annoying and loud they will drive you nuts and not to mention kill your trees they were early this time wonder why i know usually you shouldnt see them but just every 7 or 13 years
They are noisy, but do not kill the trees at all, and therefore not classified as pests. There are over 500 different varieties, so a new variety can show up one year and never show up for 12 more, so each year we have them, just different varieties.
dude, you think this is noisy? when i was a kid and visited my relatives in the rural areas in the philipines, my little cousin, brought in a whole platic bag full of them into the house!!!! quite a few ran free!! man, that was one hell of an experience
Cool video, and it shows off the beautiful yard. You know when you start talking in the video, you remind me of Carl Sagan and how he did some of his documentaries. Thanks for sharing Dave. 5 stars.
Nice got to love wild live its just so an amazing great creatures, there use to be a lot of crickets, birds and wild life were I live, now with the sudden growth rate the wild life went pretty down a shame really! I miss all this day and night natural surroundings sounds, but thanks for sharing brings great memories, good thing there still places that one can go and stay to enjoy all this wonder. Thanks again! Great video! Nice to see the cocoon breaks out!!! AWESOME!!!
Very interesting indeed mate, they sound like some thing out of a sci-fi movie lol,so do they just make that sound in daylight or at nighttime too?we also have a bird box in our garden which the little blue tits look in all the time for bugs i think but never nest in it,as i think it might be abit to big for them,my step son made it at college and i was so proud of him,5*
