Exactly. Chaka is pretty good, but I just don't think this song fits very well... She could have sang one of EWF lesser known, but still great songs. I would have loved to hear Can't Let Go by her.
The problem isn't the song fitting her well because Chaka can sing anything.The issue (to me) is her approach to it & that gruff growling,belting technique she used whereas being a singer of many sounds & styles she just chose the wrong one!
try to listen to it a lil bit more Tyj..at first i had the same thought as you, but after some deep listening now i greatly appreciate her interpretation on this! its damn powerful, funky, filth and it complimented the strong funky drum and bass on this song very very well! im sure it will grow on you too! btw which Chaka touch doesnt grow on us anyway? lol..
No, it seems like Aretha's voice got weaker as she got older. Chaka's voice has gotten stronger and she can actually do more than she ever has been able to do in her younger years.
Chaka Khan is one of the funkiest women around. This is a great and NASTY tribute to the GREAT EWF!!
