Thunar allowed you to open a file as root, which was a massive helper to me for software installation, but since version 0.93 (I think I went from .90 to .93...) you can't do that any more. Any idea how to get that back besides removing it and installing an older package?

Actually, su means "Substitute user"

Or you could do
sudo passwd
to set the password.

sudo -s
is faster.
