Yes! I met him backstage at Expo 70. I think he had a Gibson 335 which I really liked! All the bands hung out there at various times. We performed twice a day for 5 days in August. Very cool video, thanks for the memories!
I saw Alan Merrill do a solo acoustic show last saturday night in New York City Dec 12, 2009 at Kennys in greenwich village on bleeker street. He was great!
Alan went on to conquer the british charts in the early seventies with his band The Arrows..always wondered about his performances in Japan. Thanks to Youtube and you this has now been made possible x
Look at the *video response* just under the video box. It's written in Japanese. The link is to The Tiger's farewell "Beatiful Concert" and Alan Merrill is the MC saying "Tigers! Tigers!" in a call and response with the crowd, Jan 1971 at The Budokan Tokyo. Fun stuff.
Just a black tee shirt, filmed lived on TV and in front of all those Japanese kids in '69. You gotta respect that! What a strange career he had ahead of him!!

At the end of the clip you can briefly see The Tigers take the stage, at 2:07. The Tigers were as big as The Beatles in Japan at that time

I have followed rock since the late 50s. Today, for the first time, I have discovered Alan Merrill. He should have been worldwide HUGE.
