When I went through this shit I was held back with a group of talkers and forced to try and sing the Army Song. I got through the first line and maybe a tenth of the second before becoming too short of breath. That stuff made me feel like my eyes were melting out of my sockets and a bunch of needles were stabbing me in the chest. Trust me, this part of training SUCKS, but its also great fun to talk about after its over. Gave me and my battles something to laugh about for the rest of BCT.

@dirtbike5100 they do it with and without masks so you know what it feels like to actually go thru it. just in case shit pops off and you dont have your mask on you. or your mask breaks (which happens all the time)

Uhm also....yes it's diluted, but your skin starts burning as soon as you walk into the chamber (without the gas being released). That's due to gas residue from constantly cycling in and out recruits. In a closed, airtight space, it doesn't matter how diluted the tear gas is. It's not going anywhere (like it would during a riot on some wide open city street) and will only make you more miserable as time goes by. Two minutes in the chamber feels more like half an hour.

People who say it's "just tear gas" need to realize that during this phase of basic training, soldiers are broken down and physically exhausted. They get almost NO sleep, there's PT at 4:30am every day, fireguard, ridiculous D&C exercises not to mention the constant punishment from the sadistic drill sergeants. So ask yourself, if you were in that kind of physical and mental state, would you do better in the gas chamber? I went through it (Ft. Sill in 2000) and wouldn't want to do it again.

in the air force basic training they made sure that we had our eyes open before we could leave, but I must say the army guys definitely stayed in longer. Couldn't see for 10 minutes after I got out of there (because of tears), so I was walking down a hillside damn near blind

Bullshit... My mask sucked ass. I was in the 2nd to last platoon to go and one of the first ones it that group. I could barely breathe in my mask to begin with. From the point I broke the seal to say my name rank social yata yata, i was sucking in gas the whole time. In fact, when i was trying to reseal the mask, i got more air from the CS gas air than in my mask lol
