  • This is awesome...But it looks lip-synched. Watch Johansen! Still awesome though!

  • @RockNEHouseNHipHop

Not lip-synched. Unless it's a version I've never heard before. And that is unlikely

  • It's the attitude--for '73 this was of the charts. NYC.

  • This isn't punk. This is glam rock. Like a 70's Motley Crue.

  • Comment removed

  • Punk before Punk existed

  • I dont really like this...but I can see how others would. Thumbs up.

  • I coulda sworn Johnny Thunders was wearing a swastika armband on this clip. Did the BBC airbrush it out?

  • @coloneldecker nah mate. All the british bands did that

  • I had the punk pure pleasure to see the Biba's roof garden gig and a number of Johnny Thunders live lively gigs and the pleasure was everyone's! Thode were the 70's

    Greaat daze!

  • Wonderful band at their absolute peak. God bless Johnny, Jerry & Arthur. This is Rock 'n' Roll....accept no substitutes. McLaren only managed them in the later days....not in this period.

  • god rest them, how many are still alive.Annie looking foxy, wasnt Malcolm Mclaren their manager

  • god rest them, how many are still alive.Annie looking foxy

  • If this ain't one of the best songs ever I don't know what is

  • cringe worthy. They look like trannys, must of been what they were going for.

  • @grizgreen978 Clearly you weren't there, so no wonder you don't get it. Check the documentary film "All Dolled Up," by Bob Gruen & Nadya Beck, for some much needed perspective. When the Dolls broke on the music scene in '72 they changed rock music forever; it just took a while for the rest of the world to figure it out, as is often the case (see: Velvet Underground; The Stooges; MC5; etc,).

  • @grizgreen978 - Look at pix of the Stones 72 tour - They were almost as glammed up as these guys.

  • Man, look how early this was...right on the heels of the hippie thing!

  • PURO PROTOPUNK

  • Yeahh this Jagga rocks

greetins from Argentine fuck Bieber, reggaeton and rap

  • this song makes me want to slam a huge dose of heroin....

  • @timinthenati no doubt

  • 14 People aren't comfortable with their masculinity.

  • "Punk" is all about punk rock music.

  • This is the album version dubbed over a live tape... or they're faking it for tv.

  • @TheFarnation the sound and video are not in sync

  • Handjob! Hahahaha. Oneword!

  • @MrLawman10 sooo...my guess you didn't like punk at all right?

  • @PeterMayer , you pompous tit,i liked some punk but the new york dolls were in my opinion crap.

  • @MrLawman10 moi, moi, moi..a "tit" eh? Love it when you all try to swear. It sounds so....cheeky.

  • this is the gay version of rolling stone

  • @anlcntrox shit off i love the rolling stones and nydolls rolling stones are beter but nydolls are oone of punks founding farthe..i mean mothers . +gay is not an insult + mick jager was bi

  • @karlmopmod13 'Rolling stone' by Bob Dylan dumbass I love rolling stones too and NY dolls. Plus I think my friend just said that while on my account lol.

  • This is real punk boys and girls!!! That 90's grungy shit some folks have tried to classify as "punk" doesn't even come close to the genius of music like this!

  • Morrissey was the head of the "New York Dolls' fan club in England. What a big surprise!

  • This sounds amazing.

  • He's wearing heels because they're The New York Dolls...GLAM at it's best

  • I wondered why he was standing like that, in the last frame you can see he's wearing women's high heels. (lead singer)

  • God bless Arthur "Killer" Kane! May he play his Excalibur bass guitar for eternity in Heaven!!

  • @HumGuitar Amen!!

  • 1973..a little ahead of their time

  • I like punk..but not this band..

  • @fistchips your loss!

  • i feel 4 U bro. jet boy stole my baby 2. and th kkk took my baby away

  • whos cooler johnny ramone or johnny thunders?

  • @guitafire The Ramoes who else

  • this song is the best!!!!! fuck off

  • A rollin stones wanna be

  • What a load of crap, there are 15 year old kids around now that blow these guys off the stage. The New York Dolls are a band you're supposed to like, not because they're good but because there's credibility attached to liking them (for some inexplicable reason). The emperor has no clothes!

  • @cookdave

No it's because they sound great -- can you show me some links to some "15 year old kids" that "blow" the NY dolls "off the stage"? I'm not talking about some boring video of a guitar whiz either...

  • @cookdave, go on then show us these bands. Just admit it you made that up, Im not a HUGE fan of these guys, but they had something all right and were pretty good

  • @chrisM33 Go along to some local gigs and you might understand what I'm talking about. Some of my favourite bands over the years have been small-time groups that nobody has heard of.

The NYD's play like a bunch of teenagers that put together their first group, I was conned into buying their album a few years back by people that were "into" music. I don't hang around people like that anymore.

  • @cookdave I doubt anyone would disagree that there were better bands around then (and now). The Dolls have earned their place in the affection of music fans because, without them, we wouldn't have had bands like The Clash, The Sex Pistols and The Ramones.

  • Put $5 on the Dolls, this band willbe 100 years mentioned.

  • normalnie rzecz biorąc czysty punk rock

  • Wow, that was really bad. As in incompetent

  • "protopunk" what a douchebag term! "Procter and Gamble in association with Johnson and Johnson a subsidiary of Kraft Foods, GE, and with a generous contribution from BP, brings you....PROTOPUNK! It will whiten your teeth and bleach your anus! Just ask Buster Poindexter!

  • @240ups it's not really something to get bent out of shape about. It simply means "first punk". When used correctly it can define a whole bunch of bands that directly influenced the punk sound.

  • @240ups Yeah, I'm a douchebag on a rant! what the fuck does it matter! Merry Christmas! Music lovers!

  • mick jagger wannabe

  • @piafounet nigga you dumb

  • @piafounet Uhhhh! YEAH! And Mick Jagger wanted to be....! Let's all be Mick Jagger!

  • give the guitarist a mic cmonnnnn

  • the documentary: NEW YORK DOLL is the most amazing documentary ive ever seen.. i was introduced to the band through this documentary

  • it's buster poindexter!"feeling hot,hot,hot"

  • Without Brainstorm by Hawkwind would Punk have come about?

  • JET BOY - New York Jets - now it ALL makes sense.

Is Fireman Ed in Rykers, yet??

    Go GIANTS!

  • when a man isnt gay he may dress anyway he likes he still wont look gay. when a man is gay he cant hide it no matter what he does. funny

  • Jim Greco!!

  • Haha and Green Day's todays punk heros? When is Zombie Sid Vicious going rise from the grave and kill them sinful simulacrums

  • @Cubs1719 This gives me an Idea.

  • @Cubs1719 when sid vicious actually turns into a punk icon, not a fake bass player from a boy band

  • @zosothedestroyer

Haha i can't even be mad at that comment - too good

  • @Cubs1719 ;)

  • @zosothedestroyer THANK YOU! Fucking finally someone echoing my view

  • @mikethaironlung haha no problem brah

  • wow. talk about ahead of your time. i know where steve stevens got his hair style from. shit. i wonder what those pussy ass hippies thought of this.

  • is this the rolling stones

  • @geoffdoor really? your not serious. it says new york dolls in the title, or am i missing something, a joke perhaps?

  • I feel just like a 14-year-old babysitter who just got the kids to sleep and got to come watch some late night TV before the parents got home. How I did raid the pantry and watch stuff my parents wouldn't let me see! :)

  • uno de los grupos pioneros del punk rock

  • punk was all about being yourself! now "punk" has a uniform and a lifestyle, when real punk was never about any of that shit!

  • @JohnnyRevell123 Live it and criticize no more.

  • @JohnnyRevell123 Yeah, exactly.

  • @083770 Indeed, when i was 12 i used to walk around with my walkman (1st gen 1980) with NYD on it and going nuts. A couple of years later i saw Buster doing Hot hot hot and i never recognized from the cassette cover;)

  • @083770 Cool, he also sang Hot hot hot. Never knew he was the guy from Puss 'n Boots!

  • Smelly boys with lipstick on;)

  • Bob Harris was right, these guys are like a straight up parody of rock music.

  • what a great post!

  • they just dont play rock like they use to.

  • if johnny thunders ain't rock n' roll, it doesn't exist

  • pose

  • so great. so beautiful to see. they are so singular.

  • Johnny Thunders! The most copied man in rock - both his sound and look. He was the best.

  • this is out of synch, fucking change it! god sake!

  • YAAAAAY THIS SONG IS COOL

  • Pure Rock that blisters lives even shorter! ....or does it.....

  • This is were Japan got there whole image & not to forget there names,

    Dave Sylvain, Mick Karn, ect

  • The band was so original, too bad Dave wanted so bad to be Mick!

  • must underated band of all time them and the pixies.

  • awee....XO!

  • This kills! Thanks for the upload!

  • there style reminds me of the rolling stones, the main singer even looks like Mick Jagger

  • i actually remember seeing this performance on the old grey when i was a very very young child and it disturbed me greatly too see men looking so girly and making such a racket hahaha I cried

  • Love this

  • Saw them like a year and a half ago at the house of blues in anaheim, CA and they sounded pretty good to me. i was only like 16 at the time but i doubt ill ever forget it. even bought a shirt! all dolled up!

  • now are they still as good as they were before?

  • miming, man...

  • JT, what a guy,the ultimate junki fk up iconic guitarist

  • RIP Killer!

  • historic. the dolls made it happen

  • Thunders has the coolest hair!!!

  • frickin frackin funkin a yeah mo fo baybayeee this can't be done anymore cause we just don't have the raw material anymore. maybe someday

  • favorite song by the Dolls. go thunders!

  • Just awesome. So many motherfuckers owe the Dolls for their careers I don't even know where to begin. Call it whatever you want... glam, punk, r&b, rock-n-roll... all that matters is this is EXACTLY what the world needed at the time, and most of the world wasn't ready for it. RIP Johnny, Jerry, Arthur, and Billy.

  • punk is an attitude. the so called punk bands now are mainstream conformist crap

  • @bobbarbill

Only the ones in the mainstream..

  • @bobbarbill Thank you at least theirs people who still understand the culture out there.

  • @bobbarbill - great comment - but what has this got to do with punk?

  • @bobbarbill no.

  • And so punk was born....

  • yeah thats right-malcolm maclaren stole the idea off these or so the story goes-punk was sound back in the start

  • NYD is a Warhol factory product, maybe first in rock story. He was amazed by Mick Jagger's aura and attitude (on video, in a visit to The Factory you can see Andy dribbling at) and then he mixed some English glamm and voilá. Check Queen's punk first, not only Ramones, to get the main picture.

  • Beside The Stooges, of course.

  • enh....you relly have to include Iggy & the Stooges and MC5 to fully create the birth of punk which led up to the Ramones & the Sex Pistols.

  • and Richard Hell & Patti Smith

  • it blows out minds

  • um, maybe try to follow this potential scenario: Me wants to get women - must be in band to do so - dress prettier and rock harder than the rest of them and ultimately beat them at their own game. Turn the tables and see if any rockers can outshine your display of lovely plumage (and timeless songs) - any takers?

  • This song is simply the most orgasmic song David Johansen has ever made.

  • One of the most invigorating performances ever. Viewing this for the first time made Punks of the British youths who would make their names a few years later.

  • i have a ramones comic book that has a seperate part of the book that has a history of the doll's

  • comment me back

    im bored on cam wl

  • Iggy, not Johnny. Johnny looks killer here.

  • This was the clip that first introduced me to these guys and where I fell in love with their shoes. I thought any guys who can wear those must be worth listening to.

  • Ahhh how nice to revisit that era!

I remember seeing them at the Waldorf Astoria many many moons ago. I think I was 16 and went there with my friend Doreen Capetta, who was sort of a groupie. We acted like we were part of their crew. Of course we weren't and were a tad too young, but boy did we love the look! It was an outer-boroughs meets East Village meets Art School meets Olaf Daughters of Sweden kinda thing.

I remember Todd Rudgren was there and he had the coolest shoes.

  • 4.40 that changed my life forever! Long live the NYD's!

  • Look how many people stole Johnny Thunders look: Motley Crue, Steven Stevens..on and on.

  • What I think is great is that people calling the NYD fags to their face back in 73 would have led to the Dolls kicking the shit out of them, those boys were tough bastards. Iggy remarked when he came out of jail in drag to "Hey Iggy, why are you wearing a woman's dress?" with a simple "Hey fuck you, this is a man's dress!" damn right.

  • and fags rock!

  • Um... All of members of the New York Dolls were straight.

  • hell yeah, straight horn-dogs, no doubt - i'm clarifying for all the homophobes (ie cludd224) the lameness of calling shit "fag"

  • who cares if they were/are gay or straight, they were a fucking badass band, why do people care whether artists are gay or straight, if they make great music, why would you even care! the breakdown around 1:22 is pure punk rock! the sex pistols and malcolm mclaren stole so many of the new york dolls sounds and ideas, fucking poseur! i do love the sex pistols as a band though, just can't stand malcolm mclaren!

  • it's the same thing with people getting hung up calling bands punk or rock or protopunk... just listen and love it.. ya know?

  • love that story. wasn't there a good one about him at some teenage girls house in a danskin? haha!

  • Im not sure music gets better than this. Id forgotten how fantastic, how new and how exciting they were at the time. A perfect fusion of fading Glam Rock and the burgeoning Punk Rock... Thanks for posting.

  • glam rock was just rising in the early 70's, not fading. it was punk that was just arriving, and these fused the two perfectly. no other band has done a better job of being so original and fresh since these.

they are shit now though. have you seen the new look version of the dolls? not too good without johnny thunders i dont think

  • Hhmm, I would say the Glam Rock period was between 1970 and 1974 and as this was recorded late 1973 so I will stand by my assertion 'fading Glam Rock', but as you agreed with me on the whole, we wont fall out over it!

  • the dolls had started in about 70-71 though, if you think about it.

as you said, its not a big issue, and not an argument. i just like the glam scene more than the punk scene, i guess thats why i say that.

the image of the dolls was fantastic, and a big influence on the great bands of the 80's, which is my fave era for glam/sleaze music. faster pussycat, hanoi rocks, motley crue. all my fave bands of the time, and bands i still listen to today, especially the really early crue and hanoi stuff.

  • Killer Tune + Killer Band!!

    David Johanssen Rulez*********

I wonder where my 8 Track Tape is*

    ;PPP

  • Killer Cane!!!!!!! RIP

  • FUCK OFF

  • i love his brian jones tear drop guitar

  • to stevemcgraw1987 ur too gay for thedolls the dollsare great

  • Really? This was 35 years ago. I cannot imagine what you think about Rupaul, Queen, and the divas who walked down the scenarios since then! I Think this was nothing copared with we all have seen in the last 20 years!

  • For those of you that require a history lesson.. This particular appearence on british tv may have directly caused the punk revulution and inspired many of the artists you idolize today... This is PRE PUNK Pre Motley Crue

  • wich one is thundrs i cant tell when hes dolled up lol

  • Thunders is to the far right with the leather jacket.

  • The Stones? You stupid, stupid, stupid people!!

  • johnny is sooooo hot in this video

  • well thank you, spiro agnew hey. so let me guess, still at home on mummys tit and money, love music but too scared to do it your self, try and lift up your gut and find that penis you once had and tell him,'daddys o.k just a few more pay cheques and where outta here'...learn to love, it is what it is. dolls didnt invent it nor did the stones. hope you find your little scared willy.there both good soft cock

  • the familiar comparison of the Dolls to the Stones comes from the fact that Johansen and Jagger share the same mouth

  • the american mick jagger. sweet stuff.

  • killer riff from thunders !!! this tune is wonderfull

  • i always like to say: NYD are punk band and though they have a lot of garage in their sound you can't ignore the singing style the riffs that are clearly punk...

  • I remember seeing this on Whistle Test when it came out and recall Bob Harris' rather snide remarks about the Dolls' musical abalities. I
