how do i get this music on my computer?!?! i love all of the duncan sheik versions of the cast, but i'm not a huge fan of the cast recordings on iTunes. Please please please help me out!!
Actually, Martha was originally supposed to sing this song as a solo. They added Ilse in during Off-Broadway. Thanks so much for uploading these! I already had them but I am happy they are being shared with everyone because Duncan's recordings are amazing.
A friend of mine saw it at Lincoln Center in 2005 and the program lists that this song was sung by Thea, Ernst, Georg and Franz (who's apparently another character casualty)
I've found an early script online, and it is in fact Thea who sung it. I think it makes sense, personally. It sort of goes along with her whole "trust adults no matter what" attitude. Because of the abuse, she ends up with a screwed up perception of child-adult interactions. If you ask me, it actually does more for her character that it does Martha's.
In the early demo of SA, it was Martha and Thea singing because Martha was physically abused and Thea was supposed to be sexually abused instead of Ilse.
correct me if i'm wrong...but a red flag goes off in my head that Thea was also abused in the original story...which could also be the reason why she sang this song originally...
I've read the original several times, but I don't remember that... But then again my memory is faulty. When does it talk about Thea being abused as well?
if anywhere (again i can't remember too well and i can't find my copy of the script) it would be the same place where martha talks about her being beaten...

@misspriss421 You could use something called YouTube Downloader? If you Google it, it's the first result. :)

Thea? Isn't it Ilsa? not sure.

It is Ilse. She's referred to by name in this song in the show. She and Martha both sing it.

I love hearing Duncan Sheik sing SA songs. Thank you so much for uploading these!

Haha, gotcha. I feel stupid now.
But yes. Thanks for the demos. It's really fascinating to see how much they've changed.

Pretty different. Which character sings this? The Masked Man?
fuzzyslippersx23 3 years ago
I'm pretty sure it was still Martha and Ilse - this was just a recording Duncan Sheik did for the demo. :)

Thank you so much! I had a feeling it was just Martha for a while - but I wasn't sure. :D

The fellas make sense, awfully specific, though, for backing vocals. However, Thea makes no sense whatsoever. It had to have been Martha.

I've got a pic of the program listing and it says Thea. In fact, Martha is only mentioned by name for My Junk.

That's bizarre.

Very interesting. Is there anyway you could provide me with a link to this script? I'd love to read it!

Seconded. I'm trying to put together the 2001 workshop in text, from the download I got, but I am DYING for this script you speak of...
Soalai2006 2 years ago
nope
thea had "dark i know well" to begin with
I like it that way
I almost with the song would've been a duet with martha and thea
because of thea's lines leading up to "dark i know well" it would've been shocking and heartbreaking
blckrocker 3 years ago
but I don't understand; why would Thea sing the song? She's not abused by her parents, so it kinda wouldn't make any sense.
thefreakandgeek 2 years ago
her lines right before are "my uncle says if you don't discipline a child, you don't love it"
and "free, but how will we know what to do, if our parents don't tell us"
i think it would make perfect sense
