Actually I just saw the other night on the ABC that Howard supported the East Timorese vote for independence in ten years from 1999, and the President of Indonesia even said so on the program.

In the documentary John Howard asserts that he sent a letter to Indonesian President Habibie in December 1998 in support of independence. And from that time, Habibie acted to set up an independence ballot.

More lies.

The ABC itself on Radio National quoted that very letter on Sunday 30 May 2004, which illustrates Howards support for Indonesian control of East Timor.

Peter Cronau: The letter was a bold attempt to help Indonesia retain its hold on East Timor. It was an attempt to head off moves for an immediate vote on self-determination, to give Indonesia breathing space from the mounting international pressure.

Here at a taped Senate hearing in 1999, DFAT Deputy Secretary John Dauth, as an aside, confirms the letter was designed as an effort to strengthen Indonesias hold on East Timor.

The letter confirms that my initial research is accurate and that John Howard was lying through his teeth during the interviews presented on the ABC.

Glen Clancy has done a most remarkable job in pulling all the evidence together in this well crafted documentary.

It's well worth a watch for all those who still suffer under the illusion that their government is there to help them. A careful research of the facts should convince anyone who thinks otherwise.
