Yule Brenner did a similar spo, though the focus was more anti-smoking.. But he knew he was dying from cancer when he did it, which made it even more poignant.
I'm impressed by this, it shows another side of a man who once promoted smoking (Camel Cigies). He started as a radical and became a conservative but that does not mean that he was insincere. While I was unhappy about his relationship with Senator McCarthy and his reporting of fellow actors I have always respected the fact that John Wayne believed in an America that cared about injustice despite a proclivity to violence and materialism (his view).
@chrisburke52 So if he really cared about America and not just the money he made from her, then why did he side so strongly with the tobacco lobbies in promoting their deadly products?
@serpico56 If it was 1965 ('62 is when he had his surgery) how did he make a reference to True Grit, which was released in 1969? Did he have the ability to see into the future? Who's the moron now?
@tony26531 He might not have served in combat...but at least he had the decency to avoid using the F-Bomb every other word.
Angry much?
John Wayne was an actor who contributed a great amount of work to a great amount of movies in his career, and I believe he did a fantastic job.
The man's dead, and isn't trying to make a buck off saying that he fought in a real war or saying he is any more than he really is. Show some respect for the dead and those who respect him.
yes its true...John did not serve in ww2,& he got alot of heat for that... so, he made a pro-nam war called Green Beret, one of the worst pro-war films ever, at the time ,most of our country was against that war..wayne lost public support for awhile... but he bounced back.. maybee john wayne movies helped the morale of our guys in ww2 more then him in war...
And as for you, same things apply as what I said to NE Sherv, Get your facts straight. If you do the real research on him you would know that he tried to fight for our country several times, but either the Studio he worked for wouldn't let him, which they could do back then, or he wasn't cleared because of his health!! WWII was around the time when his back started really going bad from doing most of his own stunt work!! Think before you type next time!!!
@Pizuzuzimmer i now know that i have prostate cancer. its not more sinister than the bad guys. both of them are out to get you, when i was in the army the bad guys couldnt get me. and this little shit wont get me either.
Now, (5/2011) we know low sodium diets cause heart disease, and chicken fat/skin has some of the most powerful antioxidants that we can consume. I think the food fear police are really just guessing. Thanks for killing us off with your bad guesses. 100% of smokers don't die from smoking though some would have us believe that. Smoking is bad, no doubt. and it seems to have fatally affected the Duke. Some chain smokers live long lives in spite of the smoke.
@NESherv He actually go cancer from a film he did in Utah that was downwind from above ground nuclear testing. Several other people in that film also died of cancer.
@thedavidwilson I suppose that could have contributed to it as well. But I guarantee you that he wouldn't have died so soon if he had lived a healthier lifestyle.
@NESherv get your facts straight, you can get cancer from ANYTHING nowadays. There are more and more causes for the many different kinds of cancer that are around. Just because a person smokes or not doesn't mean they will get cancer. Do your research before shooting your mouth off!
@cecelialynn09 What does it matter that smoking won't guarantee a person will get cancer? It's still a stupid, nasty, unhealthy habit. My mother smoked for 60 years and not only couldn't have stopped, but was in total denial that she was hooked. I'm more thankful than I can express that I never picked up the habit, and have gotten to where I won't even consider a serious relationship with a woman who smokes; and I'm not exactly in any position to be choosy. That's how much I detest tobacco.

I found this commercial quite moving when I first saw it, all those years ago. It has even more resonance for me now, having survived cancer three years ago:) --
This dreaded disease robbed me of my father and many of my friends and I would like nothing better than to see a day when no one has to worry about cancer.
How pathetic that you would put your own father and some hack dick of an actor you've never met in your life in the same category. You should be ashamed of yourself.
Are you macho in the way Marion was macho? You know, yammering on and on about how men have to stand up for their country, and then running away like a pussy when WWII happened and he was of age to serve?
