I dont know if this guy speaking on this movie has all his FACTS but ONE THING IS TRUE. IF YOU WANT TO LEARN OF A HISTORICAL PERSON MAKE SURE YOU CHECK YOUR SOURCES. I HEAR THE HISTORY CHANNEL IS GOOD.
It's a movie? Not a re-enactment, well researched but may be still a little incorrect dependant on source research, again though, it's a movie.....what's the point? it's like "who killed who".."Monty Python". good listen though- via opinion. Thanks!
there are mistakes like this in almost every historical film, the reason ur find it so ''propesterous is because your angry cus the scots fucked england over
@MrWeeRhys It seems to me as though it is the English destroying Scotland, not the other way round. But you are biased and I am not and you cannot take that.
@alanheath ERM are you actually serious? English destroying the Scottish? are you for real?! YES the film was inaccurate but Scotland won there freedom by kicking the English out of Scotland. END OF coming from an Englishman call that biased?
@alanheath ''It seems to me as though it is the English destroying Scotland'' looking at your profile pic ; your use of clothing facial expressions i can make a slightly stereotypical judgement about you... you like the last night of the proms, which is very anti scottish might i add, if i called you a snob youd secretly like it, a conservative; more vulnerable get more vulnerable and wealthier get wealthier, you want my dad to work till hes fukin 90?
@MrWeeRhys Obviously I am sure you are far better dressed than I am. As for the last night of the proms, I have never seen it - I do however believe that it is something to do with classical music which I do not like. As for me being a snob, I think that it is about the last thing anyone would call me. Again wrong on being a conservative and as for your father working wrong too.
It is rare that someone can be so wrong on so many things. Congratulations. At least you are consistent.
@alanheath Scotland wasn't anything like how the film had shown, in the film, Scotland is overall depicted as a stone age society and more like how Scotland would have roughly looked two thousand years earlier than the time of Braveheart. Scotland was a wealthy Northern European Kingdom. Not a Iron stone age land populated by dirt poor farmers.
Scotland was all Knights, Castles, Royalty and Sovereign Scots who knew their constitutions well.
@alanheath You're wrong about King Robert I of Scots, he knew exactly what side he was on, portraying him as a turn coat to his own country was the biggest most offensive parts of the film to most Scots, Robert I of Scots was actually the true 'Braveheart' and gained that name by the black Douglas earl of Mar he first coined Robert as 'Braveheart', he did more for Scotland than Wallace did.
Wallace was Knighted by King Robert I of Scots and did have title of Guardianship of Scotland though.
@alanheath And lets not get started on Andrew de Moray's complete lack of portrayal in the film when he was just as great a Scottish Knight as Wallace was and equally played just as much a role as Wallace did despite dying first.
Robert I was more like what Wallace was in the film.
I heard that the Yankee behind the director of the film, Randall Wallace only changed the characters around and made it out like Wallace did what Robert I did just because he had the same surname as Wallace!
@alanheath Wallace wasn't some dirt poor farmer like he's depicted in the film either, he was a highly intelligent, well educated, extensively travelled, land owning, noble Scottish Knight.
@Englanistan I think that that was obvious in the film - I may have been critical about some parts but that comes out when he demonstrates his knowledge of French.
About the Battle of Stirling Bridge I would like to explain how is really happened: The shape of the river at the point of the bridge was a U shape with the bridge at the upper left corner. The English knights and the infrantry crossed the bridge and were then trapped by the Scots with no room to move. Those English who were not slain drowned trying to escape. If the battle was fought as it is shown in Braveheart it would have gone completely the other way.
@fatparrot66 I know, more credit for Moray please :)) Hands up! I am born English. However, my grandfather was born a decendant of Kenneth MacAlpine which is why I am so interested in Scots history. I am always torn between loyalties and get irritated by the anti-English thing and equally annoyed when Englishmen insult Scots. I am sure I am not alone and quietly laugh at the so called "Nationalists" who hide their questionable ancestory. I can't imagine what it must be like being born in Berwick
@FrancoHitlini Yes but you are English and not Scottish regardless of descent, you're not one of this dumb deluded Yank Plastic people from America, a pretend Scot are you?
@Englanistan To be honest.. I have a mixture of English Scots and Welsh. My Grandfather was from Inverness so definitely a Scotsman. I consider myself British as I firmly believe that your ancestory is in the blood and not in geography. People move around for many reasons and I know that so many turn a blind eye to the fact that their own ancestory is not what they prefer to think but delusion is not my bag thanks.
I may not remember having seen this video before but now that I have....it's a very nice way to ruin a good FILM. Can i ask though seriously..if the PEASANTS of Scotland didn't care about their country ( bearing in mind they would have been to thick to even know they were Scots ) who did all the fighting ???
I so wish they would make a film about the real Braveheart and the victor of Bannockburn. Wallace was courageous and consistent but he was not the tactician Bruce was.
@alanheath But..., whos brain? Wallaces or Morays? I grant that the subsequent Falkirk campaign against Edward had some merit but... this was Longshanks, probably the greatest warrior of his time. Even if the Scots were able to pursue a retreating English army I still think avoiding a direct battle against Edward would have been a wiser course.
@FrancoHitlini Sometimes a point is made and I want to reply quickly so I don't forget but in your case it is a point worth thinking about. My speciality is in twentieth century history so this makes it harder.
I think Stirling Bridge showed a great opportunity (of course I have the benefit of hindsight and know what happened).
The most honest answer I can give you is that I must think about it although I suspect you know more than I and may be able to throw more light on this.
@alanheath I cannot belittle Wallace for his tenacity but it is generaly believed (though I bow to greater wisdom) that Andrew Moray was the man who chose the ground and planned the tactics at Stirling Bridge. However, he was wounded in the battle and later died and I feel he did not get the popular credit the Wallace almost inevitaby did. Stirling was not a chance engagement, sound knowledge of the ground and minimizing the cavalry disadvantage were critical considerations for the Scots.
@FrancoHitlini One of the reasons it was a bad idea for the Scots to engage Edward I in pitched battle was that Longshanks, because of his progressive military mind, was an unpredictable opponent. Falkirk is proof of this. Wallace built a battle plan upon the experiance he and the Scots had previously had against the English - expect a cavalry charge and a follow up infrantry assult - but Longshanks used massed archers for the first time in British history and rendered Wallace's plan obsolete.
@11nytram11 Quite agree. The Falkirk campaign was meant to be a scorched earth retreat and it almost worked as Edward was facing winter and already having to settle discorse amongst the Welsh in his camp. However, a scouts report that the Scots were assembling was all the half chance Edward needed to bring the Scots to battle. The English had used large numbers of archers before but, of course, the difference was it was this was the first massed use of longbows in the English army.
the two outstanding lies in the film are 1) The title! This was the name given to Robert the Bruce not Wallace 2) Bruce was not the man who betrayed him, that was one of Wallaces own men. Bruce himself divides oppinions amongst Scots but the way he seems to be portrayed in the film seems to mark him as a back sliding traitor rather than a truely calculating realist waiting his time.
William Wallace was the last interesting thing that happened to Scotland. The sooner the UK is dissolved the better. Let the drug addicted, haggis munching dickheads fend for themselves.
Yes, the English did many terrible things in the past. Perhaps that what makes our history interesting. I'm English and i think Braveheart is a great MOVIE.....but not a great documentary.
Its a movie not a history lesson! if anyone should be annoyed by the historical mistakes it should be a Scotsman like me but its doesn't because its just a movie if it was a documentary then i can understand your reaction but its a movie chill the fuck out mate
hmmm ok .... ok .... yes...yes.... really....really ... no way....i didn't know that... ok....hmmmm...yes...ok...Imma go enjoy the film now and forget everything you just said but my hats off to you for the video sir ! I can appreciate the historical interest
@alanheath Also of note it says in the film they thought each other over the crown, this was not the case at all.
I actually find that quite a naive statement myself, for example the MacDonalds (who had the leadership of the Isles to the western side of Scotland), who spoke Gaelic (originating from Ireland when the Gaels moved over) in something like 600BC from what I can remember.
@alanheath They had a long feud with the Stuarts from Lowland Scotland over power of Scotland not the crown at all, infact the Lord of the Isles had his own just wanted more power and would cement itself at Bloody Bay on the Sound of Mull.
@patrickyunblocked Agreed the english have been needing to get a life for centuries.I would never believe anything they had to say about Scottish or Irish history.
"Braveheart" certainly did play fast and loose with historical fact, which has long been the tradition in Hollywood. Hopefully, one positive result of the film's popularity will be to inspire people to learn the truth about William Wallace and his exploits, I know it did with me.
@SuperImready I was born spitting distance from were he was captured. So I knew all about him before the movie. As did all the people that grew up in that area. When other kids played cowboys and Indians. We wanted to play at being Wallace. But nobody wanted to go the English.I wonder why that was eh?The film did have its holes in it.Like the bit that the Irish changed sides.I wish that had happened. But sadly they were on the English,s side along with the Welsh. But they were crushed, for a while.ALBA!
@MI6TommyEnglish Actually Longshanks said that as he was returning to England after his victory at Dunbar and after he had stripped John Balliol of all his symbols of Kingship and sent him into exile. He then gathered up the Stone of Scone, the Scottish Crown and the Black Rod of St. Margaret and sent them south and followed after them, then spoke those words as he crossed back into England.
how stupid can this guy be? this "alanheth" actually believes people can not discern the difference form an actual historic episode to an actual representive clip made for entertainment? now the real question is: "why does he feel so imperative inclined to promote a youtube video of his personal views which are more likely correct historical wise but only reflect hatred to a well notorious movie? i would like to assume some pyschological reason, but not this time. let's let him be.
@w1lp34 Let's see if I have understood. You claim that there are not people who fail to see the difference between films and reality - I would like to believe that correct but it is not. That apart moving onto the real question which is that according to you, although I am stupid I am probably correct but by telling the truth I am either inciting or reflecting hatred to a movie which is already notorious. I must be stupid because I cannot understand that nor have any desire to attempt to.
@alanheath people who grasps reality and fiction as a schizophrenic episode fusioning them together are not worth paying attention to unless you are of course a mental doctor. and that, sir, would be an extreme event. i still doubt your reasons for making this clip. you claim to tell the truth, well sir. do tell it, but do not under any circumstance take a movie out of proportion because its main purpose is to entertaint, not to be historically accurate for you nor anyone else. live with it.
@w1lp34 Americans are too stupid to even know their own history, and yet they have the nerve to make movies about historical events of other countries. As a direct result of this practice most Americans can't find their own country on a map thus spreading an image of incredible stupidity and ignorance throughout the world. This guy is making you a favor pointing out the main source of your problem. Braveheart went as far as to imply that Wallace was Edwards II father. Give me a fucking brake!
Review Summation: Edward I was a bloodthirsty psychopath: CHECK Hanging Barn when Wallace was young: CHECK His father was a low Noble: NOT SAID IN THE MOVIE BUT IMPLIED AS HE HAD HIS OWN LAND Edward II was a homosexual wimp: CHECK Edward I threw junior's friend out a window: CHECK Wallace was romantically involved with the Princess: NOT TRUE Wallace won Stirling, but lost Falkirk: CHECK The Bruce was wobbly on his loyalty: CHECK Wallace was betrayed, tortured and murdered: CHECK.
@YesWeCantaloupe No, he wasn't. Edward I was Not a bloodthirsty maniac' - you just Made That Up. He was a Great, inspiring leader, Political reformer, a Crusader and military tactician. The latter being the reason he WON BATTLES. He was called 'The Hammer Of The Scots' because he hammered the shit out of them. It's pathetic how people who are beaten whine that they were defeated 'unfairly'. BH is a shitty, laughably-contrived movie. The Scots lost. Everyone does at some point. Get over it.
@YesWeCantaloupe I think it unfair to say Edward II was a homosexual wimp as though it were something bad. If more medieval kings had spent more time at home instead of raping and pillaging around other people's territory to build castles and cathedrals then the world would be a better place. Although not for tourism. Possibly.
jus primae noctis is invoked by Edward I of England in an attempt to breed the Scots out, although historically inaccurate for this was never invoked by the English in Scotland, at any point in history.
...as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom – for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.
Anyone remotely curious about the sad MrCrummydrummer's troll-ventures can start by punching 'zulu' into the YT search and looking at the 2nd one down (upl. ColourSgtBourne) he's written PAGES of tripe about everything including saying he's Australian (here, he claims to be black) and 'was in the Special Forces and can kill a man 27 different ways' - needless to say nobody likes him there either.
@slideharp1 i bet the whole of you tube wishes you had been aborted ... no one believed that part in the movie you complete muppet . as if a scotsman would go wif a garlic breathed frog ... the bit about the english raping all the newly weds is true though ... just how scummy are the english ... thumbs up folks if you think the english are the sexual deviants of history
@MrConundrummer This is What Happens to brain-dead pieces of trash who scrawl graffitti on my Music Channel wall; They get zapped with my trusty cursor - and then they are Erased - did you not know this?. Are you going to "rip my arms off and smash my head with the bloody stumps" I'm getting really scared now, MrCrummydrummer.
@MrConundrummer Oh, Hey!! I just remembered...don't ask me about the Scots and your 'mlilitary history' my g-uncle was in the Black Watch and once drew me a sketch of a Ghurka knife, describing fighting with them to me when I was a kid - they were an elite brigade when thy fought together. How does That compare with your bullshit about being from an Aussie Special Corp, lmao.
@slideharp1 i have a shelf full of medals , i once escaped through enemy lines and killed 3 men with my bare hands before i got back to safety . snapping necks whilst in uniform made me the man i am today ... scots and ghurkas men who wear dresses and scream like little girls when they get shot at ...i could eat them for breakfast.
@slideharp1 Condomdrummer said and to all you... who say mel gibson is australian .. actually his ancestors were from scotland hence . if you do not know what the f##k you are on about shut the f##k up ." Now he's said something we can ALL agree with, right? Gibson was born in Peekskill, New York, moved to Australia at 12, If he has given up his US citizenship, it's news to me. His background is largely IRISH (which explains his Anglophobia).
@slideharp1 Condumdrummer is a piece of work. Been slamming people on Metalica board too. The only video he has something NICE to say things on is "Andy Steward A Scottish Soldier." What was it he said about Scottish soldiers and Gurkhas?
And what's this rot about the Gurkhas wearing kilts? I've never seen any photos of THAT. The Gurkha knife is called a kukri, BTW. I have an old WWII issue I take camping. Very effective camp ax.
@ImperialistRunningDo You posted, or were posted, a comment re the value of a WWII rifle. I don't remember which one specifically, but a figure of $15,000 was mentioned - and you use a WWII kukri for Camping?! I trust you keep it in good condition. When my g-uncle drew the picture for me (I would've been maybe 6-7, he seemed a very tuff'n'gruff) he ran his finger along the inside of the blade saying "and that edge - you could shave yourself with it".
@slideharp1 $15K seems fairly steep. Maybe I was talking about a Martini-Henry? Price is always a factor of demand and supply, and when the movie "Zulu" came out, demand went through the roof. I can still pick up a lee-enflield for under $1K.
I would never argue with a member of the Black Watch... but my kukri is ax-sharp, not razor sharp. If you get an edge as thin as an old streight razor, it won't hold up to chopping wood. My kukri is still sharp enough to draw blood easily; I would know
@ImperialistRunningDo Well, maybe he was exaggerating a bit re shaving with it (it was So sharp that.....), I wouldn't want a guy weilding one at me even if it was blunt. After all, I prob'ly wouldn't know it Was - and wouldn't be inclined to ask ("waitaminnit ,how do I know that thing is Real sharp?") and a Ghurka in the field would prob'ly use his kukri for anything and everything incl. chopping wood. I don't know about the WWII rifle - I just a remember a figure of $1.5K. Maybe a comparison.
@ImperialistRunningDo Something sickening happened very recently here; A TV personality, Joanna Lumley, was involved in a fight to get appropriate pensions for Ghurka Vets. Apparently they were being shafted over some 'small print' that disqualified them something more in line with other Brit Vets - something about not being British enough. Yet when Saddam was being given the heave-ho, a tabloid front-paged a pic of one headlined 'Mr Hussein, this is a Ghurka, etc.......comin' at ya!.... B.S.
@slideharp1 I saw Joanna Lumley with cabinet minister Phil Woolas on the news. She ripped him a new arsehole. He was humiliated. The Brits love the gurkhas for what they've done for us. The government at the time was totally out of touch with the public feeling. The rest is history
@turkey08041954 I didn't see that but I wish I had,lol - And you must've seen that Daily Mirror? headline (I don't get papers, just look at headlines, going out the co-op) when troops were going to Iraq.....sheeiiiit!!
2)..so now the 'Braveheart' of Scottish history is WW. Gibson is a joke (he's a nationalised Australian, BTW - orig. from NY State, U.S) afer shagging the princess (who want's a Real man) he's later caught. She visits him in jail and gives him a drug to get him 'out of it' for what's to come. He then gives her a long frenchie and after she's gone he spits out the potion. WTF is that meant to mean? Whilst being tortured he looks like he's just been given a large gas bill.
john balliol was a puppet and edward was a 13th century hitler he actually expelled all jews from england in the edict of expulsion,a bet he didn't know that
nothing in common with fact? this is exaggerated braveheart is maybe 60% fact 40% legend or myth,English people just slate it because they're embarrassed about the disgusting atrocities that the english created
Don't Run your insulting comments at me Mister! You are a Plank!
Your intellectual reply is amazing beyond words. Stupid Ass Worship Alan? NO! Admire Oh Yes Someone i would want to met Oh Yes. Alan's knowledge I admire. He is a interesting person. Historian! Tough if you do not find it so! Agree or do not agree I could care less! Your knowledge of history is that of a TERMITE! This "Hussy's" in the USA Says QUEER OFF!
this alan heath guy is only slating this movie cos he dont like mel gibson ... well mr heath no one on here likes you or your pathetic opinions .. and to all you know all faggots who say mel gibson is australian .. actually his ancestors were from scotland hence . if you do not know what the f##k you are on about shut the f##k up .brits are a bunch of inbred little islanders .who argue about anything .
@susie101fm susan your hussy like worship of mr heath is is very touching . however going back to edward 1 i have to agree with his treatment of females a life of serfdom to the man . if only we could bring those days back so we could sort you belligerent wenches out today.id ban you all from the internet and get you back in the kitchen.
@MrConundrummer Serfdom socio-economic status of unfree peasants . It was a condition of bondage or modified slavery which developed during the Middle Ages in Europe. LOL Keep Dreaming! Wenche? LOL Belligerent?
@susie101fm yes your full of something all right .. susie101fm.... sounds like a yankee radio station that spouts gibberish and you just want to switch it off cos its so damn annoying. bit like alan really. you two have so much in common sharing the one brain cell springs to mind.
@susie101fm you remind me of why i got divorced twice . the reason women have smaller feet than men is so that they can get closer to the kitchen sink .witches like you should be kept away from modern technologies like the internet ... back to the your coven pathetic female .....last time i saw a body like yours ..it was being milked you obnoxious cow.
@MrConundrummer As you can see someone does like me and I suspect that that is one more person than likes you. If you do not know what you are talking about perhaps you should be quiet - or are you so frustrated that you need to take it out virtually whilst cowardly hiding behind a false name.
I would rather you did that than take it out on other people.
@alanheath if you are a historian im a muppet... i could blow you away with my historical knowledge especially military .. a few pointers on the movie most of the things in the movie are true just not at the right time ...ie when edward 1 fired arrows on his own men he did .but in a different battle . why dont you take the time to study things in more depth before summarising your dirge . you want eveyone to think mel gibson is a tosser whence it be yourself old son.
@alanheath to sum you up mr heath and your colonial mistress miss nosey know all susie101fm.. it seems to me that mel gibson said a few words aimed towards jews , so he is insulted and demonized by you both . well mr gibson has a right to say how it is ...your attempts to ridicule this fine actor and may i add fellow aussie of mine will not be tolerated . you sir are a jerk.
@MrConundrummer Look you Arrogant Pompous Jerk I said nothing of Jews or Mel Gibson's opinions get that straight . Got yourself in a Hissy Fit You Should Try And Relax Have a real name? or did mummy tell you not to use it you might get into trouble I got you ticked off? Good! Now Queer Off
@susie101fm dumb middle aged redneck yankee spinsters should not be allowed opinions . i can picture you right now.. with your big american flag flying in your back yard whilst knitting another in between typing utter tripe on you tube . and why do all american women over 40 look like overweight chipmunks with their big eyes and big front teeth.god i hate americans .
@alanheath You're right - Braveheart is a piece of exploitative Trash. And not only the idiotic historical contentions - Gibson gets Patrick McGoohan, who speaks in a deep grainy voice, to affect a squeeky, womanish tone. This is meant to infer, along with dozens of other examples, that the English are all perverts who have sex with their children - meanwhile, the Scots are dancing 'round a maypole and throwing rocks at each others' heads. BTW the Braveheart of Scots history is Robert th'Bruce
@slideharp1 this movie is not trash its art .. only the bloody english dont like it ..well tough you were all a bunch of murdering scum . you are just another you tube muppet who talks a lot and says bugger all. leave the movie alone and stick to being a very bad musician.
You're wrong about him not being a Highlander. William Wallace childhood friend was a Macdougall. Hamish in the movie was that Macdougall but, he wasn't called Amish. His name was Duncan. The Macdougall clan is from Isle of Argyll and Oban.
It's even documented in clan history stating that the Macdougalls strongly supported Sir, William Wallace and record of Duncan being his childhood friend.
@slayerfromabove Edward II would today be a very respected king. I doubt whether Edward I would - on the contrary he would more likely find himself in front of a criminal court. Different people for different times.
of course he would stand trial for crimes against humanity, how else can you run an empire in an age of steel, fire and gold? Most kings of today wouldn't be able to maintain control of a cottage in the dark ages
Alan Thank You for the very informative commentary on this.. Very Interesting as are all your videos on history in general on such a wide range of subjects.
@susie101fm Thanks Sue. Maybe I went over the top on this one but then again I don't like racist drunks playing heroic characters and may be that got to me. As you know I am not a medievalist but a modern historian!
I have read and head if you will his remarks and or statements.
I do agree on the rasist playing heroic characters . Going over the top No. A historian studies and writes about history, a authority on it. Research of past events relating to the human race; as well as the study of all events in time.
@susie101fm yes susie alan is amazing ...single handedly destroying the scottish tourist industry . let the dumb yanks believe the crap and take their money alan you sad little moron.
@MrConundrummer my comment was for Alan i am not a historian as is Alan destroying scottish tourist industry that is not in Alan's control
Moron you do not know me as for Alan he speaks for himself. . a flim critic
"is the analysis and evaluation of films, individually collectively. In general can be divided into journalistic criticism that appears in newspapers, and other popular, mass-media outlets and academic criticism by film scholars. Now look up what historians do.
@MrConundrummer How am I destroying the Scottish tourist industry. On the contrary it strikes me that people like me that film things only encourage others to go there.
I am glad people are exposing movies like this. Braveheart used to be my favorite movie but now thanks to watching videos and doing reserch for myself on the real William Wallace. I am happy to have seen this.
@Christknight1990 Thanks for your comment. Please note though that in no way I am attacking William Wallace and I think the film gives a pretty good impression of Edward I. What I don't like is giving people modern characteristics in historical settings. Furthermore you can see from other comments how touchy people can get when you spoil this image!
quite the worst most inaccurate commentary ever, its showed young william having his friends and family murdered secretly for rebellion against the king because they had a meeting which of course happened all the time. BH is very historicaly accurate in terms of most of the blind harry stuff. but the battle of stirling brisge and the bruce stuff and some of the other crap and characters are made or greatly far from reality. Stirling bridge battle took place ON A BRIDGE FOR INSTANCE...a bridge
Heath, I KNOW the truth, but this did no harm........or should we discuss the entire British Empire, lies and complete lies, ? Monarchy ? more lies ? Iraq ? Choose witch ! Nairn. ex Falklands, and Northern Ireland, were they all political lies ?
@alanjakarta Judging by the tone of your message you have some psychological difficulty. This film is about the film Braveheart - it is not about Iraq or anything else. Stick to the point - and get your anger problems dealt with.
Heath, I KNOW the truth, but this did no harm........or should we discuss the entire British Empire, lies and complete lies, ? Monarchy ? more lies ? Iraq ? Choose witch ! Nairn.
@alanjakarta Of course you know the truth.... after all you were certainly there and saw it all. Probably also knew Edward I and William Wallace personally - no doubt they used to go down to your local pub.
@alanheath It's an exploitation movie, pure&simple. The English are all old'n'ugly and the Scots are Woodstock hippies. Edward l was an amazing warrior and leader, and he was a Crusader when he was Prince - in fact he was on his way back when he was told that his father had died. After defeating the Welsh he built all those beautiful castles you see there now. Gibson changed history with this movie. Robert the Bruce's heart was preserved, kept in a box and taken into battle for Luck and Spirit.
william wallace was a scot fighting for what he believed in , but the coward mel gibson makes his fortune portraying characters from history brave people while he avoided the vietnam war by fleeing to another continent
@bollockchops55 This is a very good point. It winds me up no end when I see people who run away from performing military roles (which in some cases is understandable) yet then go on to make out that they are a hero in cinematic roles.
@madtycoon10 I have not seen Robin Hood so I don't know. Gladiator - fantastic special effects, wonderful little details like the people in the streets of Rome seen from above. Exciting story too - nice political plot.
BUT historically a disaster. They could have at least opened an encyclopedia and found out that Marcus Aerelius reigned for 19 years - not 25.
Mind you, I can accept Commodus being killed in the ring for dramatic effect even though this was not true.
What is your problem? offcorse somethings are made up for the audience. but you know wallace did beat the english.
And that you go to these lengths just to show that some small insignificant part of braveheart wasn't accurate just proves how much this movie got under your skin. funny but also really pathetic.
@Alba12349 More to the point is what is YOUR problem? You admit parts of the film are not accurate yet you claim it gets under my skin. Inaccuracies do get under my skin - yes you are right. I find it quite pathetic that people like you justify them.
@Alba12349 It strikes me that you are the one who needs to get a life. Get rid of some of your anger - maybe get a girlfriend, go out a bit, have a few drinks ....
@Alba12349 Oh dear - I seem to have hit on a very raw chord with you don't I?
How do you know I am a poof? Takes one to know one, doesn't it?
And if you take the bother to hear what I say, you will notice that nowhere do I insult William Wallace but I do attack Edward I. I suspect though that you would be more interested in his son - possibly more to your taste.....
@Alba12349 As I said earlier, it takes one to know one. And you seem to be pretty interested in my sexual orientation which leads me to assume that you are homosexual - not that there is anything wrong with that.
the film doesn't even show or mention Andrew Murray who led the rebellion in the north and he was also badly injured at the battle of Stirling bridge dying 2 months later.......kinda pisses me off especially since Murray ismy mom's maiden name
@bayridge108 To be fair they have to pack it into a couple of hours or so without getting the plot to complicated. And they must leave time for the sex scenes which seem to be obligatory in all films these days.
@bayridge108 Don't get me wrong. If Sophie Marceau wants to come round to my place for a quick one then I would be only to happy to oblige..... but without the cameras.....
why wouldnt it have been the english? just because there was no war at the time between the 2? well they may have started something with those hangings, why would it result in a war against the english if it wasnt the english that committed those hangings?
I cant believe that some people actually take movies as completely factual. I had a guy reply to me on a Scotland the brave vid, he told me that Lochlan and Morney are traitors to Scotland and that their decendants should go live in england!!! They dont exist outside fiction. Unbelievable, also another common one is that the Bruce betrayed Wallace at Falkirk, he wasnt even there. Madness!! Good film though.
Hey I need some HELP!!!!! So I LOVE writing and just sent a book into a publishing company to see what they think, I have a web-site promoting it and since I'm only 16 it'll be kinda hard to get published so the more ppl who sign my guest book the better! Please go check out my site and sign my guest book! at thekingsghost.webs.com My book is called "The King's Ghost" and this is actually what it is about!
The provocations presented by Edward I was his call for troops and funds for an invasion of France. The Scottish instead started secret deliberations with the French and Norwegians, promising eachother support in case of war with England. Edward didn´t appreciate that scheme.
The fact that many people base their perception of real history on movies make it essential that they contain some sort of truth. Sadly, people don´t see movies as entertainment alone, they see it as an easy way to educate themselves as well (once I was one of them). I´m especially glad that you mentioned the anachronism of nationalism in this movie.

It's a movie? Not a re-enactment, well researched but may be still a little incorrect dependant on source research, again though, it's a movie.....what's the point? it's like "who killed who".."Monty Python". good listen though- via opinion. Thanks!

MrWeeRhys 1 month ago

Englanistan 1 day ago
@alanheath You're wrong about King Robert I of Scots, he knew exactly what side he was on, portraying him as a turn coat to his own country was the biggest most offensive parts of the film to most Scots, Robert I of Scots was actually the true 'Braveheart' and gained that name by the black Douglas earl of Mar he first coined Robert as 'Braveheart', he did more for Scotland than Wallace did.
Wallace was Knighted by King Robert I of Scots and did have title of Guardianship of Scotland though.
Englanistan 1 day ago
@alanheath And lets not get started on Andrew de Moray's complete lack of portrayal in the film when he was just as great a Scottish Knight as Wallace was and equally played just as much a role as Wallace did despite dying first.
Robert I was more like what Wallace was in the film.
I heard that the Yankee behind the director of the film, Randall Wallace only changed the characters around and made it out like Wallace did what Robert I did just because he had the same surname as Wallace!
Englanistan 1 day ago
@Englanistan Good points - thanks for making them. A number of interesting points have been made since this was posted!
alanheath 1 day ago
@alanheath Wallace wasn't some dirt poor farmer like he's depicted in the film either, he was a highly intelligent, well educated, extensively travelled, land owning, noble Scottish Knight.
Englanistan 1 day ago
@Englanistan I think that that was obvious in the film - I may have been critical about some parts but that comes out when he demonstrates his knowledge of French.

About the Battle of Stirling Bridge I would like to explain how is really happened: The shape of the river at the point of the bridge was a U shape with the bridge at the upper left corner. The English knights and the infrantry crossed the bridge and were then trapped by the Scots with no room to move. Those English who were not slain drowned trying to escape. If the battle was fought as it is shown in Braveheart it would have gone completely the other way.

According to BRAVEHEART Andrew Moray didn't exist and The Bruce was a bit of a coward.

fatparrot66 3 months ago 2
@fatparrot66 I know, more credit for Moray please :)) Hands up! I am born English. However, my grandfather was born a decendant of Kenneth MacAlpine which is why I am so interested in Scots history. I am always torn between loyalties and get irritated by the anti-English thing and equally annoyed when Englishmen insult Scots. I am sure I am not alone and quietly laugh at the so called "Nationalists" who hide their questionable ancestory. I can't imagine what it must be like being born in Berwick

@Englanistan To be honest.. I have a mixture of English Scots and Welsh. My Grandfather was from Inverness so definitely a Scotsman. I consider myself British as I firmly believe that your ancestory is in the blood and not in geography. People move around for many reasons and I know that so many turn a blind eye to the fact that their own ancestory is not what they prefer to think but delusion is not my bag thanks.

paulinesmith44 3 months ago
I so wish they would make a film about the real Braveheart and the victor of Bannockburn. Wallace was courageous and consistent but he was not the tactician Bruce was.
FrancoHitlini 3 months ago 3
@FrancoHitlini Certainly Bannockburn showed a great deal of tactical ability. But I think the nearby battle of Stirling Bridge did as well!
alanheath 3 months ago
@alanheath But..., whos brain? Wallaces or Morays? I grant that the subsequent Falkirk campaign against Edward had some merit but... this was Longshanks, probably the greatest warrior of his time. Even if the Scots were able to pursue a retreating English army I still think avoiding a direct battle against Edward would have been a wiser course.
FrancoHitlini 3 months ago 2
@FrancoHitlini Sometimes a point is made and I want to reply quickly so I don't forget but in your case it is a point worth thinking about. My speciality is in twentieth century history so this makes it harder.
I think Stirling Bridge showed a great opportunity (of course I have the benefit of hindsight and know what happened).
The most honest answer I can give you is that I must think about it although I suspect you know more than I and may be able to throw more light on this.
alanheath 3 months ago
@alanheath I cannot belittle Wallace for his tenacity but it is generaly believed (though I bow to greater wisdom) that Andrew Moray was the man who chose the ground and planned the tactics at Stirling Bridge. However, he was wounded in the battle and later died and I feel he did not get the popular credit the Wallace almost inevitaby did. Stirling was not a chance engagement, sound knowledge of the ground and minimizing the cavalry disadvantage were critical considerations for the Scots.
FrancoHitlini 3 months ago
@FrancoHitlini One of the reasons it was a bad idea for the Scots to engage Edward I in pitched battle was that Longshanks, because of his progressive military mind, was an unpredictable opponent. Falkirk is proof of this. Wallace built a battle plan upon the experiance he and the Scots had previously had against the English - expect a cavalry charge and a follow up infrantry assult - but Longshanks used massed archers for the first time in British history and rendered Wallace's plan obsolete.
11nytram11 2 months ago 2

@alanheath Also of note it says in the film they thought each other over the crown, this was not the case at all.
I actually find that quite a naive statement myself, for example the MacDonalds (who had the leadership of the Isles to the western side of Scotland), who spoke Gaelic (originating from Ireland when the Gaels moved over) in something like 600BC from what I can remember.
iamyourgod1988 6 months ago
@alanheath They had a long feud with the Stuarts from Lowland Scotland over power of Scotland not the crown at all, infact the Lord of the Isles had his own just wanted more power and would cement itself at Bloody Bay on the Sound of Mull.
iamyourgod1988 6 months ago 2

Margaret and sent them south and followed after them, then spoke those words as he crossed back into England.

how stupid can this guy be? this "alanheth" actually believes people can not discern the difference form an actual historic episode to an actual representive clip made for entertainment? now the real question is: "why does he feel so imperative inclined to promote a youtube video of his personal views which are more likely correct historical wise but only reflect hatred to a well notorious movie? i would like to assume some pyschological reason, but not this time. let's let him be.
w1lp34 1 year ago
@w1lp34 Let's see if I have understood. You claim that there are not people who fail to see the difference between films and reality - I would like to believe that correct but it is not. That apart moving onto the real question which is that according to you, although I am stupid I am probably correct but by telling the truth I am either inciting or reflecting hatred to a movie which is already notorious. I must be stupid because I cannot understand that nor have any desire to attempt to.
alanheath 1 year ago
@alanheath people who grasps reality and fiction as a schizophrenic episode fusioning them together are not worth paying attention to unless you are of course a mental doctor. and that, sir, would be an extreme event. i still doubt your reasons for making this clip. you claim to tell the truth, well sir. do tell it, but do not under any circumstance take a movie out of proportion because its main purpose is to entertaint, not to be historically accurate for you nor anyone else. live with it.
w1lp34 1 year ago
@w1lp34 Americans are too stupid to even know their own history, and yet they have the nerve to make movies about historical events of other countries. As a direct result of this practice most Americans can't find their own country on a map thus spreading an image of incredible stupidity and ignorance throughout the world. This guy is making you a favor pointing out the main source of your problem. Braveheart went as far as to imply that Wallace was Edwards II father. Give me a fucking brake!

Get over it.
gyrofoam1 1 year ago
@YesWeCantaloupe I think it unfair to say Edward II was a homosexual wimp as though it were something bad. If more medieval kings had spent more time at home instead of raping and pillaging around other people's territory to build castles and cathedrals then the world would be a better place. Although not for tourism. Possibly.

My kukri is still sharp enough to draw blood easily; I would know
ImperialistRunningDo 1 year ago
@ImperialistRunningDo Well, maybe he was exaggerating a bit re shaving with it (it was So sharp that.....), I wouldn't want a guy weilding one at me even if it was blunt. After all, I prob'ly wouldn't know it Was - and wouldn't be inclined to ask ("waitaminnit ,how do I know that thing is Real sharp?") and a Ghurka in the field would prob'ly use his kukri for anything and everything incl. chopping wood. I don't know about the WWII rifle - I just a remember a figure of $1.5K. Maybe a comparison.

@ImperialistRunningDo I meant $15K.

Yet when Saddam was being given the heave-ho, a tabloid front-paged a pic of one headlined 'Mr Hussein, this is a Ghurka, etc.......comin' at ya!.... B.S.

Get your facts straight mate.

well I think mel gibson makes great films, but of course, they are not historical, just fun to watch.
and about Edward II, he's a king, what do you expect? Pussies don't make kings, kings rape pussies ;)
slayerfromabove 1 year ago
@slayerfromabove Edward II would today be a very respected king. I doubt whether Edward I would - on the contrary he would more likely find himself in front of a criminal court. Different people for different times.
alanheath 1 year ago
@alanheath
of course he would stand trial for crimes against humanity, how else can you run an empire in an age of steel, fire and gold? Most kings of today wouldn't be able to maintain control of a cottage in the dark ages

Alan Thank You for the very informative commentary on this.. Very Interesting as are all your videos on history in general on such a wide range of subjects.

@susie101fm Thanks Sue. Maybe I went over the top on this one but then again I don't like racist drunks playing heroic characters and may be that got to me. As you know I am not a medievalist but a modern historian!
alanheath 1 year ago
@alanheath A modern historian
Yes and if I may say a very good one.
I have read and head if you will his remarks and or statements.
I do agree on the rasist playing heroic characters . Going over the top No. A historian studies and writes about history, a authority on it. Research of past events relating to the human race; as well as the study of all events in time.
This Would Raise Your Eyebrows

@MrConundrummer my comment was for Alan i am not a historian as is Alan destroying scottish tourist industry that is not in Alan's control
Moron you do not know me as for Alan he speaks for himself. . a flim critic
"is the analysis and evaluation of films, individually collectively. In general can be divided into journalistic criticism that appears in newspapers, and other popular, mass-media outlets and academic criticism by film scholars. Now look up what historians do.
susie101fm 1 year ago 3
@MrConundrummer How am I destroying the Scottish tourist industry. On the contrary it strikes me that people like me that film things only encourage others to go there.

I am glad people are exposing movies like this. Braveheart used to be my favorite movie but now thanks to watching videos and doing reserch for myself on the real William Wallace. I am happy to have seen this.
Christknight1990 1 year ago 5
@Christknight1990 Thanks for your comment. Please note though that in no way I am attacking William Wallace and I think the film gives a pretty good impression of Edward I. What I don't like is giving people modern characteristics in historical settings. Furthermore you can see from other comments how touchy people can get when you spoil this image!
alanheath 1 year ago
quite the worst most inaccurate commentary ever, its showed young william having his friends and family murdered secretly for rebellion against the king because they had a meeting which of course happened all the time.

Nairn. ex Falklands, and Northern Ireland, were they all political lies ?
alanjakarta 1 year ago
@alanjakarta Judging by the tone of your message you have some psychological difficulty. This film is about the film Braveheart - it is not about Iraq or anything else. Stick to the point - and get your anger problems dealt with.

alanjakarta 1 year ago
@alanjakarta Of course you know the truth.... after all you were certainly there and saw it all. Probably also knew Edward I and William Wallace personally - no doubt they used to go down to your local pub.
alanheath 1 year ago 11
@alanheath It's an exploitation movie, pure&simple. The English are all old'n'ugly and the Scots are Woodstock hippies. Edward l was an amazing warrior and leader, and he was a Crusader when he was Prince - in fact he was on his way back when he was told that his father had died. After defeating the Welsh he built all those beautiful castles you see there now. Gibson changed history with this movie. Robert the Bruce's heart was preserved, kept in a box and taken into battle for Luck and Spirit.

william wallace was a scot fighting for what he believed in , but the coward mel gibson makes his fortune portraying characters from history brave people while he avoided the vietnam war by fleeing to another continent
bollockchops55 1 year ago 3
@bollockchops55 This is a very good point. It winds me up no end when I see people who run away from performing military roles (which in some cases is understandable) yet then go on to make out that they are a hero in cinematic roles.

Nice. Make one about Robin Hood and Gladiator please.
madtycoon10 1 year ago 2
@madtycoon10 I have not seen Robin Hood so I don't know. Gladiator - fantastic special effects, wonderful little details like the people in the streets of Rome seen from above. Exciting story too - nice political plot.
BUT historically a disaster. They could have at least opened an encyclopedia and found out that Marcus Aerelius reigned for 19 years - not 25.
Mind you, I can accept Commodus being killed in the ring for dramatic effect even though this was not true.
Ran out of space 4 words!

@alanheath
What is your problem? offcorse somethings are made up for the audience. but you know wallace did beat the english.
And that you go to these lengths just to show that some small insignificant part of braveheart wasn't accurate just proves how much this movie got under your skin. funny but also really pathetic.
Alba12349 1 year ago
@Alba12349 More to the point is what is YOUR problem? You admit parts of the film are not accurate yet you claim it gets under my skin. Inaccuracies do get under my skin - yes you are right. I find it quite pathetic that people like you justify them.

you maybe need to get a life. William Wallace is part of scottish history and we are proud of him and our country.

you seem to be pissed off about a film. (thats based on a true story)
get a girlfriend? go out abit? haha

bayridge108 1 year ago
@bayridge108 To be fair they have to pack it into a couple of hours or so without getting the plot to complicated. And they must leave time for the sex scenes which seem to be obligatory in all films these days.

why wouldnt it have been the english? just because there was no war at the time between the 2? well they may have started something with those hangings, why would it result in a war against the english if it wasnt the english that committed those hangings?
DaAlphaOmega 1 year ago
I cant believe that some people actually take movies as completely factual. I had a guy reply to me on a Scotland the brave vid, he told me that Lochlan and Morney are traitors to Scotland and that their decendants should go live in england!!! They dont exist outside fiction. Unbelievable, also another common one is that the Bruce betrayed Wallace at Falkirk, he wasnt even there. Madness!! Good film though.

The provocations presented by Edward I was his call for troops and funds for an invasion of France. The Scottish instead started secret deliberations with the French and Norwegians, promising eachother support in case of war with England. Edward didn´t appreciate that scheme.
Faxe90Swe 1 year ago
The fact that many people base their perception of real history on movies make it essential that they contain some sort of truth. Sadly, people don´t see movies as entertainment alone, they see it as an easy way to educate themselves as well (once I was one of them). I´m especially glad that you mentioned the anachronism of nationalism in this movie.
Keep it up.
