  • Surprisingly... so wheres the cleavage that most people are watching these videos for?

  • I wrote a comment 2 years ago that dealt with the subject of Scylla and Charybdis being sirens. They are NOT. Sirens lure men into the path of the monsters. They sing in order to bring men towards the sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis.

  • In the original Odyssey, it does not give a certain shape, they could be men for all we know.

  • lilith in the video game boarderlands

  • ok u r way off on that a siren is a lady who has the head of a voulture a pink neck and a body of a lady therefor sirens would lore sailors 2 there island and take them down 2 there underwater layer forgetting that humans can not breath underwater also if the sailor makes it alive 2 there island alive they show images of there weakness through love and u will never want 2 leave than as soon as u r good than they will kill u and that is a siren see u were way off

  • @kittysuperstar11 Actually you're both correct to a degree. In early Greek art, as well as mythology, they were depicted as she stated with the head of a woman. It wasn't until the 10th century that the myth evolved into the Siren having the head of a bird, a sparrow to be more precise.

Leonardo da Vinci wrote of the Siren,The siren sings so sweetly that she lulls the mariners to sleep; then she climbs upon the ships and kills the sleeping mariners. the fallacy of an underwater lair is movies

  • in all my research, scylla and charybdis have never been named as sirens; they are monsters.

  • @whatsanlp They aren't sirens..lol.They are monsters.who said they were sirens.?

  • @OhWhoaBaby right above my post, blackmumba111 did.

  • @blackmumba111 That is so wrong lol read the Odyssey once more.

  • @KalikaAthanasiadis

No...you obviously didn't read it then. Scylla: six heads, four eyes, 12 tentacles, a cat's tail, and 4 to six dog heads around her waist. Charybdis: a huger bladder, her head is all mouth, and she has flippers instead of arms and legs. In the part of the tale, Odysseus plugs his sailors ears with beeswax and leaves himself open to hear their song and tied to the mast. When he hears the sirens, he wants free but the men won't let him.

  • @blackmumba111 You're right and wrong at the same time. Yes, Scylla and Charybdis were monsters in The Odyssey and Odysseus and his crew did have to choose one to go by. But they were not the Sirens. And yes, Odysseus did plug his sailors' ears with wax and had them tie him up to a post so he can listen to the Sirens' song... but they were not Scylla or Charybdis. They are two different obstacles in the story. I think I would know. I am Greek after all! And everyone else is saying you're wrong.

  • @KalikaAthanasiadis

Read my new comment...I deleted that original one because it is wrong and two years old and I really had no clue what I was talking about but thought I did...nowadays I actually research and I know I was wrong.

  • Condom is a conjunction of contra and a word something like "Domus"

Contra is latin for against as domus is to creation. Similar to contraception.

  • In this book I read the sirens were mermaids and they had guardian birds. Sailors thought the birds were the ones singing. Sirens lure men to their island to make the men fall in love with them so they could get immortality.

  • I'm sorry I can only subscribe once per account. My dear, you are a siren.

  • ok honestly who watches this for the education?

  • I do. It's nice that she is cute but the main thing I watch these vids for is for the knowledge. Sry to burst your bubble that everyone sits behind his desks with his pants down ;-)

PS: "The Little Mermaid" is called "La Petite Sirène" in French :)

And there's a country that has this famous mermaid on a rock with the story about the boats. It was featured in a Spike and Suzy comic book, but I can't remember the country or the name of the ambum.

  • Denmark

  • Did you watch "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids" on Saturday mornings growing up? If so, remember something Bill used to say in the intro to the show? "We're comin' at you with music and fun, and if you're not careful, you may learn something before it's done."

  • is that true?

  • Looking at you with your orange sleeves and your stretched-to-the-max camouflaged top. You are MY siren, Marina.

  • Hi Marianne, i have a really important question for you, today i asked my history teacher why soldiers of world war 2 gave their oponnents nicknames as: jerry, Tommy or Krauts? She didnt know why and how this names came up...well thats not the answer i wanted -.- so...

Why the Allied forces called thr Germans "Krauts" and why did the Germans gave them the nickname "Tommys"?

    your trusty student nikstar^^

  • Germans were called krauts from the food "saurkraut", a stereotypically german food. Allied (though usually american) forces were called tommys after the Thompson Submachine gun which they used in combat. The Thompson or "Tommy" gun can be seen on german propaganda posters showing american soldiers murdering aryan (white, blonde, blue eyed) children. I'm surprised your teacher didn't know this.

  • thx for answer, im making sure that she also gets it^^

  • How about the word Helicopter ?

  • You are my teacher, Ill do your homework anytime:).

  • Dear HotForWords,

Any idea where the word Vader originated from? I have some knowledge about this but wanted to see if there was more.

  • Well in the Video game "Baldurs Gate" there is a siren queen who lured a man to her for mating but then he attacked her so she killed her and then you can decide if she deserves punishment or not.

    Is this good teacher?

  • Marina, you genuinely are a curiosity that i just cannot seem to fathom.

And it's not just your beauty either.

It's this uncanny quality that i can only describe with words like beguiling, bewitching, alluring, enchanting, mesmerising and entrancing.

These words have somewhat magical connotations...

so it's like you have some weird supernatural powers or something.

    Do you? :)

You are simply a modern-day siren i guess.

  • In the Greta Garbo movie, Ninotchka, there is a mention of when, before WW II, a siren was a woman not an alarm of an air raid attack. But you said they had the body of birds and then you showed a picture of the body of a fish without any transition. Just a little slip, not one you would wear. :)

  • If this were a syndicated TV program, I would definitely watch it.

I'd rather watch Marina over half of the filler programs they air on History Channel during off hours.

Eh, Sirens in other forms of media. The easiest example to recall can be found in the Coen Brothers' film "O Brother, Where art Thou?", which happens to be a favorite of mine.

  • Dear Hotforwords. How about explaining the word "pixillated"? Have you ever felt that way?

  • You know Marina, I have asked for a couple of different things to be explained, but those I am not interested in at the present moment. I have been Reading a lot of books, which I like to do, and there is a Suffix I would like you to explain for me. -OUGH, This can be pronounce in many different ways Slough (slew) Cough, and Rough (ruff). If you could please explain why this suffix has so many different sounds and yet it be spelled exactly the same?? If you could that would be great

  • Please read my last three comments from the last to first I could not create such a long comment in one part only....;-(

  • How about the one called Marina which strangely has the eponymous name of a place where ships go to or try to go to. Isn't she the greatest lure of all?

  • I don't know about you guys but the callfrom this Nereid is really strong for me....I keep coming back for more of this Naiad's raspy voice and good looks and a really smart way of learning. Oh and did anyone notice her eyes? Wow they must be the envy of the whole mermaid community, not to mention the other protuberances that often stand in the way of academic accomplishments.

  • Of all the sirens mentioned by our dear teacher, I wonder which are the most attractive as in they attract us to our doom?

  • always hot...

  • Ditto. But keep it to your self .

  • haha..We learned this in school. in 5 grade;)

    Norway!!

  • This is pretty obscure, but in the old Star Control video game series there was an alien race called the Syreen. They had the ability to lure crew off of an enemy ship.

  • tell us what you really think

  • I'm sorry, teacher, but the laugh track has got to go.

  • I can never think of ANY answers to Any of her quiestion :(..I think im abit stupid, hmmm maybe i could get some extra tuition :) lol

  • i love the title you put for the video lol

  • Siren if a gardian fighter (GF) in the video game Final Fantasy 8 for the Playstaion 1 and they also come out in the cartoon movie Sinbad, but whatever.

  • Siren if a gardian fighter (GF) in the video game Final Fantasy 8 for the Playstaion 1 and they also come out in the cartoon movie Sinbad, but whatever.

  • My favorite sirens were from Vonnegut's Siren's of Titan. They turned out to be a sculpture at the bottom of a pool on a distant planet. From faraway they looked beautiful and lured the hero to a sad & lonely end.

  • YAY NEW VIDEO!

    I know, I'm late... Sorry. : ) Great video!

  • Random eh! and any other response I have. NEWSFLASH!! Ofcourse it's not a war "on" terror, it is a war of terror.

  • Disney's The Little Mermaid, on lineage 2 there's a Raid Boss called Siren and is suppose to control all the creatures on the island. and last, there was an episode of "Samurai Jack" In which 3 "beautiful women" enchanted men and used them as slaves, but they are just hideous monsters in disguise :P
