It’s a very formal and strict method of sword viewing which not all collectors / dealers, not even in Japan, observe but if someone else is doing it you’d better do it too! Breath on the sword would be bad, especially for these extremely high-value examples, because it would promote rust and damage the art-grade polish over time. Saliva on the blade would be an order of magnitude worse.
What a nice finish with the sword viewing presentation for the children. Can you imagine trusting an average class of American students to behave that maturely and handle deadly weapons, while appreciating them as art objects and historical artifacts? I’m not sure I can, sadly...
