Debris is always coming off the shuttle.  You ae assuming that these are large and far away. I suggest these are small and close up particles.

The reason is because the Earth's atmosphere absorbs the light of the Sun and causes the more faint stars to be flooded out. It's the same reason you can't see the stars from the ground during the daytime. But they are still there. :0)
