@stonee206 it all depends on the vehicle. Sometimes (though not always) they tend to be less refined, more rough running (e.g. more cabin vibrations) as well as less aurally exciting and slower compared to their petrol brothers. Further, the diesel tends to be heavier and thus can create the potential of a more nose heavy steering and even dampening issues (resolving the latter can lead to a harsher ride as suspension is stiffened by engineers).
its funny watching these videos now seen as these car models are much more aforable for the average person only problem is you have to wait 10 plus years :s
@parrotcar Yes they do. I've seen one of these almost without floor and the other where the engine bay has turn all brown. In both cases there was no obvious reason, they just rust.
I miss the old Top Gear days when they actually did real reviews on cars. Now the show has turned into some entertainment circus show for the most part then anything else.
what a well made and superbly designed car. this is what mercedes do best. its subtle yes but important and satisfying. they will always be a car for the understated
And look at the price of FUEL back then 59.9 for diesel and 63.9 for petrol. In those days the government said to buy diesel cars as its cheaper and enviromentaly friendly. So we did and the 2 faced parasites then turn the tables on the fuel costs. I would like to see a government that can play it there way and not make fools of us by making it obvious, at least we still get to live our lives without having to tell them what F***Heads they are...
@mercedess89 Just get a saloon. My uncle had a 2001 saloon Avantgarde, and they really are huge inside, big enough to swing a lion, and that's only the saloon.
@mercedess89 get an estate! we had a -00 270cdi and the dog cage we had in the trunk only fit in that modell and some bigger SUV´s! :) since its a diesel weight doesnt affect the mpg or liter/km very much! myself ive got a w123 240D -83 and does the same acceleration whatever the weight is put in it, despite its 70hp! just great cars!
@mercedess89 , i would vote for the estate. The look has aged better on the estate model (mostly bc it looks A LOT like the newer 211 estates) and it's just more useful in every way I can think of.
10 years shows a lot in car design, a Passat estate desiel has the same performance, but does 50 mpg and can do, and i know because ive done this, 1000 miles on a tank.
"and these days u even get a stereo as standard".....0.o to think that there was such a time when that would be not standard. haha wow i wish i could a' lived back then
If you really wanted a load carrier estate back then, then the Volvo 940/960, 850 and the Vauxhall Omega were the biggest (and possibly the Ford Scorpio, but they were pug-ugly). Also I remember a episode where Clarkson realises that £35,000 BMW and Merc estates are too much for most families.
@graemeoliver84 Wrong. Honestly, my dad has a volvo 850 and an E240, both estates and the volvo is nowhere near as big, and the 940/960 aren't really either, the merc is in a whole different league of size to all of them, trust me on that.
my dad got an old 85 300TD 5cyl its a bit sluggish off the line but once it hits 20 mph the power is adequate and it sounds like a bus lol all in all indestructable
I had one of those E300 TD's when I was in Germany! Great car! So comfortable, so quiet...loved it. You could drive that thing all day and your back wouldn't hurt!
@Harcix You're right. But they should make room for both stupid and senseless. However, this clip just seemes to acknowledge how sensible Jeremy Clarkson might be... Whatever sensible means these days...
4:33 - petrol at 59.9p/litre...diesel at 68.9p/litre.Could you imagine if those prices came back tomorrow?!
