I noticed that too. A friend pointed out to me that we also see the two lesbian girls unmask themselves, aswell as the very young girl with glasses who was shot. Clearly the scene is showwing how their spirits, souls, whatever... are there even in death. How their sacrifices were not in vain.

@LaFemmeMorte The only movie I know where a disfigured dead guy is briefly unmasked is Kingdom of Heaven, the King/Prince/whatever who had leprosy. I don't know, maybe that influenced your other half subconsciously, although the rest of that movie is nothing like this.
