There seems to be a lot of misinformation about this song.

It was originally released by Wayne Cochran in 1961 and had little success. It was picked up and covered by J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers as well as other groups and each had a bit of success with it. J. Frank WIlson is the oldies version most people hear. Eddie Vedder found an old copy in an antique mall and eventually convinced his bandmates to try the song. The result is what we have here.
