  • This is the Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks, i knew. Use to see them in a place near Winterland. Anyone know the place?

  • These two numbers feature Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks at their best. The eccentricities of

each individual results in a perfect match of the group as a whole. I loved this group from the first moment I heard them; and their albums hold a deserved position in my collection. Such a unique sound Dan Hicks created - brilliant stuff; then, and now.

  • Be happy -

  • At the time--forty years ago!--I thought Dan's new sound was jazzed-up Western Swing. Today, I'm hearing Price and Eisenberg doing Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, with Price sounding about as good as Annie Ross. So I'm surprised that they didn't cover some LH&R tunes, such as Centerpiece.

  • Dan Hicks and his hot licks were awesome!! We started watching them in the mid seventies near the Bay Area. I saw him at a small club a couple years ago in Boise, Idaho and approached him to tell him how long I have enjoyed his music. Unfortunately, he was anything but gracious with me. He had a sense of humor back then, obviously. I will always enjoy his music and the memories they bring back, but I'm sorry I bothered Mr. Hicks or impositioned him in any way.

  • Youngsters, the "audience" is not laughing. That is a "Laugh Track" - taped laughter which usually added to a TV show to give the home audience a cue (or clue), so they would know when to laugh. This was no doubt added by a confused director who had no idea what to make of these oddly dressed youngsters and their vigorous musicianship.

  • The audience is laughing because they're stoned out of their minds... It's 1972.

  • Thank you for this. Going to see his 70th Bday in April. I didn't get a chance to see Dan until after 2000 when he reformed the Hot Licks, but I have been listening to him for 35 years now.

  • Too bad the audience is retarded

  • What a great sound you guys had!!!

  • No drums. Don't need them.

  • What is the audience laughing at?

  • @55chh I thought the same thing!

  • Saw them a few times at the Boarding House (SF) in 73 and 74. No one did it better!

  • People always think they are some sort of joke till they start playin......fantastic.

  • marvellous.. didn't know they had faces and bodies too..

funy to see them after so many years of only hearing them..

thanks for sharing.. clssic top quality music

  • Love those hotlicks.

  • someone finally got the "more cow bell" memo

  • This was the very best Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks lineup. Three great albums. What else can be said?

  • Ain't ENOUGH to hang out but you can dream nevertheless

  • Looks like Marianne's right ta-ta is about to start hanging out at around 3:15 or so. And then throughout "Shorty." Yipes! The is real classic Dan, the shirt, his island scene guitar, the whole thing. It is a weird piece though, hard to quite figure out. "Shorty Falls in Love" is ID'd on the screen at the end as "Another Night," a song that not only isn't correct, it's not one that DH&THL's ever did. Strange.

  • @Cyclist0623 with maryann you could always hope

  • Comment removed

  • shorty falls in love

  • what's with the stoopid laugh track?

  • loved maryann

  • But then You see the People that work & live there and what bad shape their in. Bad Teeth, Bad Health & No money for them to see a Decent Doctor. Or get any Health Care! They put them anywhere they can to live. Old Trailers, Barns, Tack Rooms, but the Horses live in Mini Palaces! I suppose if they could run faster they'd do a lot better? My 4th line below was supposed to read "You Both could break a Hip!"

  • Yes,but @utubetezza She's 39 Year Older now. So You could break a Hip. Or She could break a Hip. Or You could break a Hip. That's fatal for a lot of Old Folks. They just never recover from it! So do You still think it's worth it? I suppose we could stand by with a Gun! They shoot cripple Horses all the time. But then they'll spend a fortune to save a Racehorse for Stud or as a Mayer! I used to Service Refrigeration Equipment at the Horse Farms. It's amazing how much they spend on Vetenarians!

  • @ZEEMADMAN You mean you worked at horse farms and don't know how to spell "mare" or veterinarian? Hmmm.... I think your post is overall funny, but you know, they'd be in their 60s today and people who break their hips are usually in their 80s or beyond. If you stay active, you could have great bones at 70 and never break a hip and DO IT too. I know many who DO. Peace to you.

  • think beck would list hicks as an influence?

  • That was Sid Page on this, not David Laflamme (Laflamme did record on a real early demo of Dan's before the Hot Licks). I think it was Hicks, Laflamme & Leopold; I'm just too lasy to pull out the disk to check. It had a bunch of stuff on it that Dan later recorded w/the Hot Licks (with Sid Page).

  • Betchya the bird on the right banged like a shithouse door in a storm...

  • You gotta love Dan Hicks. After all, they listed their band's contact info in the yellow pages under "bar fixtures":

  • Went to Wikipedia (admittedly sometimes flawed) to refresh my memory (even more flawed LOL). Pattie Santos was with David in IABD. Wiki's chronology seems a little off as the page on IABD says David formed the band in 1967, & the Dan Hicks page says he & David formed the Hot Licks in 1968 & David was "quickly replaced" by "Symphony" Sid Page. Of course since I'm not familiar with David's contribution to the Hot Licks he might have had more of a fiddle style then himself! Peac 54taqiyya & all

  • that's not david la flame? patti (who i am still trying to remember her last name) maybe linda is in there too i bet.

  • @54taqiyya No, definitely Sid Page. David LaFlamme had less of a "fiddle" style & played violin with It's A Beautiful Day.

  • @HeartoftheDragonColo ok, i might have my info alittle twisted, i know david did IABD. that sid dude looks a lot like him.

  • I never heard of them until I saw them open live for Quicksilver at a small auditorium at Santa Barbara's Museum of Natural History in somewhere around 82. One of the very BEST and MEMORIABLE concerts I've ever been to! Even Qsilver was pissed that they were outplayed and they put on a bad show to say the least. And the biggest reason I went was for Qsilver but after seeing Dan's folks I was a Hicks fan FOREVER!!! The band line up was the same as this vid I believe. Thanks for the memories!!!!

  • This is one of my most played You Tube video's; real American music...they could of done without the canned laughter.

  • This is one of my most played You Tube video's; real American music

  • AbsoStlutely brilliant, Loved and love them kinda annoying when the audience laughed... Oh so good

  • Saw this band in 1969 at Wayne State College.

Sat front row and the Hotlicks were not wearing any underwear.

You can just imagine what was going through the mind of a young lad at the age of 18 years old. WOW.

    Love the band.

  • the original texas 2 steppers

  • wow!

I always wanted to see this thanx so much

  • Me my Buddy Kane Hollins got to open for Dan and the New acoustic warriors at Rauls in Main back in the early 90's. Awsome. They blew us away by the way

  • yeah, that's the laugh track playing, not the audience laughing

  • I remember going to a concert somewhere in L.A back in the early 70's. I went to see It's a Beautiful Day but was kind of disappointed because David LaFlamme the violinist was replaced by Sid Page. Not that Sid is bad but it was just a bummer. What made it even worse was the opening act. Their name escapes me right now but they did the song "On the cover of the Rolling Stone"

  • @tebanas1 that probably was dr. hook and the medicin band....

  • @tebanas1 I saw IABD at the Hollywood Palladium ('73?) when Sid sat in for David. I don't remember any other bands that played that night. I was disappointed as well, but Sid filled in admirably. A few months after, I went to see Van Morrison at the Shrine in L.A.and Sid was sitting in with them. He's everywhere!! I finally got to see IABD, with David, last Oct here in Phoenix. Wonderful show!!

  • @tebanas1 Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show.

  • @tebanas1 That would be Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show (Ray Sawyer et.al.).

  • Awesome!

  • I think its canned laughter. Amazing that music of this quality ever made it on Flip Wilson's show. What a fantastic band, what a great songwriter.

  • He was one of my favorite bands of the many I saw over the three+ years in the 70's, when I worked at a nightclub that featured live music every night.- and I saw some of the best. Actually he was kind of arrogant but he was an incredibly talented performer and a very popular act.

  • What a find! Thanks so much for sharing this! Just shared it on Facebook.

  • more cowbell

  • なんだか、色モン扱いみたいで、悲しいような.....

  • This is about the coolest thing I`ve ever seen!

  • DAN, SID, THE LICKETTES PUT ON A SHOW THAT COULD ONLY BE REACHED BY, SAY, RAY DAVIES, AT A PEAK PERIOD OF AMERICAN CREATIVITY... THEY MADE SO MANY MEMORABLE EVENINGS, AND IF THE AUDIENCE DIDN'T GET IT, SHAME ON THEM

    CASSIUS WITH HIS KO

  • All I can say is... more cowbell .... please

  • Band should be called the B-47's ... the older brothers & sisters of the B-52s

  • Saw them many years ago. What a fun band! Thanks for the post!

  • The weird laughter reminds me of Hee-Haw. Is it canned? Certainly inappropriate for such cool music!

  • @TheBeaSides I agree - but if it is on a variety show, that was standard at the time, even for segments that were clearly recorded without an audience.

  • I first heard Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks in 72' and it changed everything in music for me....Always the Bomb

  • I cannot believe Sid Page is posting here.......Thank-you for your work!. I have EVERYTHING ever released by the band that I can get my hands on. Over the years have seen them live many times. Most recently in December, 2010 in Michigan. I was a little late to the scene, bought my first album in 1973.

  • what an hionor to see a message from Sid page himself. Mabn- you sure had style AND technique! But you already know that. Anyways- you can never be repaid on this side of the abyss for the hours of pleasure and cosmic transcendance you have given us. And by the way- where can I hook up thos gogo boot gals? Hot! makes me wanna lick!

  • Dan Hicks would do things while playing and singing to get the auduence involved, hence some of the laughter. He is a real class A showman and musical talent.

  • Last Train to Hicksville is still in my top 10 favorite albums. I was blown away to see Dan in that old Big Mac ad, too. It's on youtube.

  • Wow, Sid Page is answering posts here? Wow! Amazing skillz! I was 18 in 1972 and bought everything of this group I could get my hands on. So happy to find this video.

  • Saw DH&HL in a small theater in Indianapolis. Soon as the local inappropriate warmup act finished, their crowd cut out and left the choice seats to the real aficionados. It was pure aural nirvana. The PA wasn't even necessary; the sound from the stage was perfect. And I've never seen such great work appear so effortless. Every note from every performer was top notch. This is the stuff iTunes should have been battling over all this time. We are fortunate to have this music.

  • The director didn't know what to do with us, so..laugh trax!!..ya that's it!! Anyway thanks for all the kind words and memories, amigos...Sid Page (violin)

  • @sidified Symphony Sid!!!

What a joy to see your message. Thanks for all the great memories and vibes that continue. Hope this finds you well and thriving...

  • They were the coolest human beings on the planet - still are!

  • Dan Hicks is ledendary amoung many top performers. He combines musicianship, comedy and mixed styles like very few others were or are capable of.

  • I saw this band back in 72, as a opening act for another band @ Cobo Hall in Detroit. Nobody in the audience took them seriously, that is to say nobody paid any attention to them in a arena that held 30,000 people as they were waiting for the opening act. I remember Dan Hicks getting pissed off at the audience for this and as a result, they either got booed off stage or they cut their show short. Damn I think they were opening for Ted Nugent..I think the promoters messed up by doing this, lol

  • @gblueslover2 Nugent is a dwarf next to Hicks and the Licks...

  • @iowa61 That was SOOO long agao. I just remember specifically that night that Dan Hicks had a VERY bad attitude towrds the audience that evening- Not a very good idea, IMHO. And the crowd (unfotunately for Dan Hicks & his Hot Licks) booed them off stage. For cetain though, I didn't want to place This band in as this way all the time, because I know people have their ups and their downs, their good nights & their bad nights.

Nothing in life is ever perfect for certain....

  • @gblueslover2 You say that he had a bad attitude, from watching the video, it's not a wonder. The audience did not take them seriously and were laughing during the performance, how rude! Always enjoyed watching, hearing, and singing to Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks. Sorry that more people didn't recognize the talent.

  • @roselps He had a idea, a passion for his type of music, did all the work just like the entire world of musicians that do this stuff tirelessly, because they believe in what they do. I definately give people credit for getting in though, his idea didn't pan out.

On a personal level, his music wasn't my taste I passed up his music in record stores because I was at that time (and even now) into all types of rock..Just me though...

  • I don't get it... what's so funny?

  • what's up with the laughing? great clip. all the originals. check out the new " holiday" cd.

  • a laugh track? really? its a damn good song, dont need no damn laugh track stupid TV director

  • Just great Thanks

  • Awesome. Thank you so much for posting this rarity.

  • Saw 'em in 72...if Blue Thumb Records hadn't gone belly up they would have been well known... Last Train to Hicksville is one of the greatest albums of all time...

  • Im 17 years old and I grew up listening to this music because my parents played it all the time. Absolutely love it, i'm so glad my dad had this taste in music

  • One of my all time favorite albums, they were really good.

  • these people have little feces all together at present

  • The laughter is totally faked. Overdubbed....

  • I dare ya to try sitting still! Double dog dare!

  • Boy, were they polished!

  • Comment removed

  • One of my favorite bands - I wore out Last Train to Hicksville. My guess about the laughter - their act was so outrageous for the times that people didn't know how to react - I think their laughing at the dance moves and costumes. The B52's got the same reaction when they started out - and I wouldn't be surprised if The Licks weren't an influence for them. thanks for posting this.

  • Ginger or MaryAnn? Love to them all.

  • One of my favorites of all time. Sid Page is one hell of a fiddle player! And Maryann and Naomi are the best!

  • perhaps their Best!!...I love this one, and watch it over and over...MaryAnn P is still out there, ...you can Youtube her and see some continued artistry...

  • One BMF fiddle playing.

  • Two great tunes for the price of one ..... never caught the show live, always lived in the boonies. Have the albums and CD's though .... sweet act !!

  • the best! never miss his show....dicover this guy in France i the 80's ...

  • the best!

  • The canned laughter is so stupid. I was listening to this band in the womb in 75 and i have never stopped...luv em!!!!!

  • sheesh, wait for the funny part, people.

    Nice hat.

  • this is the Dan Hicks I was thinking about....rofl.

  • good stuff!!!

  • In case no one posted, the second song is Shorty Falls in Love from their first album. By Hook or By Crook was from the album Where's the Money recorded live at the Troubabour in Hollywood Feb '71.

  • @MUSICLOVEROK In all fairness Shorty Falls In Love was also on Where's the Money. I am so glad I got to see them back then - one of the best shows I have ever experienced, and I have seen some shows.. ;-) I wanted to run away with them! You can't tell from the camera work here, but those are two potted palm trees they carried around with them to go along with the painted backdrop.

  • @journeybear Yes, I forgot that Shorty was on both albums. Gotta get my turntable hooked back up!!! I remember the palm trees, though.

  • This is golden! Whoever put the laugh track in should be shot

  • Love It It's Hot Sound Like A Train WHOO WHOO not new to me I loved them as a child

Share with all my friends .Thank you

  • Killer. I saw them at the Troub in 1971. Maryann Price is just so damn hot. Still listen to them all the time - never get tired of them. And yeah, the canned laughter - really extra weird. Nice clip, what's it from?

  • This is classic! I saw them that same year at the Boarding House in SF.

  • Loved the clip except the stupid canned laughter.

  • Whats with the canned laughter?

  • Just saw Dan last night in New London CT @ The Garde Theatre....he's AMAAAZING, and as laid back as ever! His percussive rhythm style & awesome vocals support the incredible musicianship from his band! His latest "lickettes" are incredibly talented on vocals, hand percussion, & even blowing the concertina!!! WOW!!!!!! Still funny too with his narrative & moves!!!

  • Dan is so deadpan.

    :-)

  • Deep joy! In a time of mere musical product, Dan Hicks, his band and the Lickettes are real originals. It's clear from the response of the TV audience that they didn't know what in hell to make of it. Wonderful

  • It's a weird laugh track. There is no audience per se...

  • He's still out there as talanted as ever. Seeing him tonight at the Turning Point in Piermont NY, 4/18/2010, he plays there a couple times a year, 50 seat venue, see you there!

  • They want them to laugh it is funny . Thus the Licketts , hot , talented and funny

  • "Where's The Money" is a live album by this cast of savants. It was originally on Blue Thumb Records.

  • I think the laughter was at Dan's fancy footwork!

  • where can i find the song : " Where`s the money? " please tell me

  • I just watched a Sly & The Family Stone clip from Soul Train, and "Mr Symphony" Sid Page was on violin.

  • To be honest, I would be lauhing as weel..out of appreciation. It's a fun group to watch and good lyrics plus nice choreography. Can't beat this for entertainment and musicianship.

  • I'm pretty sure that's a laugh track, not the audience.

  • Stupid audience. Don't know what's so funny.

  • @Pheinatz

I agree, they were/are serious musicians.

The laughing almost spoiled it for me.

  • Superb musicians playing before an audience slow to realize it

They would have been laughing at Joe Cocker, also

  • Like to see Shorty Falls In Love uploaded from the Original Recordings LP. Can anyone arrange that

  • Must include this vid in any inter-galaxy space capsules. Pinnacle of western civilization arts!

  • One of the best bands ever.

  • "By Hook or By Crook" with Dan HIcks and his original Hot Licks. I so wanted to be a Lickette!

  • Why does the audience keep laughing?

  • Sid Page is brilliant!

  • Saw them open for Van Morrison in San Diego 1972... smoking HOT concert!

Where's the money? Today, so true.

  • My Mom moved us to Seattle in '73. She had this album and played it out!

    Canned music...

    .

  • I was at that Vanderbilt concert too. The music was great, but there were a couple of frat boys smoking cigars in the row in front of us and no empty seats we could move to.

  • You should have shot them for exposing you and everyone else to toxic tobacco smoke!

  • i saw them at Vandy too!!!! how weird is that...they were hot, but man it was so long ago...

  • I saw them around this same time period at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. They played to a packed auditorium....standing room only. They were awesome

  • strat8383, thanks for that, hilarious, but I wouldn't expect anything less from Dan Hicks. Comedy, after all is part of the act with Dan.

  • Classic

  • great performances! I'm not sure if they still do but Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks used to list themselves in the SF Yellow Pages under "bar fixtures".

  • Those boobies have 37 years of road on them now,

    bunsomatic. Cool your jets.

  • JethroPresley...thanks for reminding me...I don't get out much.

  • Fantastic video, thanks. I've been a Dan Hicks fan forever, never seen a video before. Especially like the cleavage on the girl on the left.

    ^QQ^

  • Ahhh...those were good times. Even with that lafftrak....

  • canned laughter sucks...great show !

  • What is with the laughter?.....That is ridiculous!

  • at&t the number 3 will never ever be freinds with mty jesus rocks

  • one of the tightest bands i ve saw...these guys rock

  • "You're looking good tonight, Girls"....."Thanks Dan"..........Love You Guys....Peace Love Blues......spread the news !...

  • My dumb butt thought the laffin' was real. 'till i read the coments hehe

    Didn't realize it was canned.

Still makes my ol' arse feel good, big grin, sing along and tap me toes.

    cheers Dan and All !!

  • Brilliant stuff, but I don't have to tell those who seeked this video out. The laughing/clapping is clearly misplaced laugh tracks. Saw Dan Hicks last year and he and his group are still great and very worth seeing. He is hilarious and one of "rock music's" great characters.

  • That second tune is "Shorty Falls In Love", at least according to the "Where's the Money?" album. I imagine this video is from a live TV performance, and the "laugh track" is real laughter, but who really knows?

  • used to see the Hot Licks at the old Armadillo in Austin--them wuz the days

  • NAOMI, MORE COWBELL!!!!

Just kidding. Great stuff. I've been ripping all there old stuff off of my LP collection. They were at their prime in this era.
