On ly 5000 views.. WHAT! U gotta be kidding... Holy S(&*. WOW. Thanks For Posting This... Awesome. Really a great look at American pastime and auto racing !
@altfactor if you have proof of this i'd be interested in this but i'm pretty sure you're wrong. i know cbs brawdcasted indycar races live but i don't think they did the 59 500 live. if you have the vid or something though i'd be interested in it
Contrary to popular belief, I don't think this was the first Daytona "500" telecast in full.
I believe CBS did the first Daytona "500" in 1959, with Walter Cronkite (who raced sports cars on the weekends back then) as commentator. I think it was one of about five or six races CBS telecast in 1959, but the auto racing series ended after that season because sponsors wouldn't touch it, despite decent ratings-----because CBS (nor anyone else) could get to carry the Indianapolis "500" live.
@altfactor Walter WAS there, and was for the next few years. The 500 WAS covered by CBS for news/topical coverage....according to the literature of the time...but it was NOT shown LIVE. CBS came back to Daytona in 1960 with the SPORTS SPECTACULAR for a 90 minute LIVE program shown 4 shorts races for compact NASCAR cars. Walter WAS a part of the 1960 broadcast as well, along with Bud Palmer...who, sas to say, can't recall the broadcast,...and band lead/car owner Paul Whiteman.
man, this was real racingback when they still run "mostly" stock bodied cars.glenn wood mentions real glass in the car.nascar ran real glass into the 1990"s.man that could be dangerous,at 190-200mph.no restictor plates, its all out flat foot racing, back when they used the slingshot move on the back stretch.i watched this race live in 1979,i was only 13yrs old.i remember the cale and the allisons, discussing the finish of the race over in turn three,it was the wildest thing ever at that time.
Brock yates is such a dumb son of a bitch. His car and driver articles are the worst! How that fucktard managed to get the job he has, let alone keep it, for all thsoe years baffles me. He must give really good head or something. Waltrip should have just got out of car and strangled him.
@Polybun i don't know what you're huffin but brock yates has wrote some of the finest books on racing. it's so good to see an actual fan of more than just nascar cause most americans don't know anything more than nascar
@ggallinisgod1 If you say so. Most of them are fairly technically devoid, and what little tech is discussed is often flat out wrong! I'm not sure where you get your information, but his books are crap. That said, that's why he was writing books about racing, instead of being out there racing. He was a moron.
first, i saw Williams fatal crash @ Daytona -for the Sportsman/ Busch Grand National/Nationwide Series-; now the greatest american racing classic, complete with a double dose of the Allisons vs Yarborough feud
now, that's some serious UNRESTRICTED, OLD SCHOOL RACING, brother!!!
Thanks for uploading a true classic! NA$CAR can FAKE a classic, but they can't MAKE a classic by screwing with the race. This race is what happens when they DON'T!
That Earnhardt kid looks quick, but I predict he'll just be a flash in the pan. He'll NEVER make it...
what a trip how they sent Darrell Waltrip out to "test" the track

"Del Cowart", involved in that Sportsman crash, is better known as Delma Cowart. He annually attempted Daytona and Talladega in his 0 car.
