@SecularInquisitor This is my hope as well; ultimately, people have paid employment not for the intrinsic pleasure of doing the work, but for the purpose of obtaining the resources necessary to survive. Without institutional barriers to this, the progress of technology ought to make it possible to spend less time doing such paid work and to spend more time engaging in activities that an individual values because of the content of those activities.
People need to work towards ending modern-day wage and chattel slavery, which currently encompasses most of the global population. The systems in place require people to give-up a lot of freedom just to subsist. If only the working class realized they are the majority, that they have the power, they could rise up and take over what is rightfully theirs.
I'm almost certain that much of the 'work' that earns money today does not contribute usefully to society, that wage and usefulness do not correlate (film star earns more than Dr?), technology could render many forms obsolete. The less 'work' people have to engage in to subsist, the more time they would have to improve the world like the inheritor; the need to 'work' prevents some raising their children efficiently, etc. But do the masses know how to efficiently alter distribution?
Indeed, you draw the correct conclusion. There have been numerous instances in history where worse ideas replaced better ideas in the mainstream of thought, or where less scrupulous individuals gained wealth and power at the expense of people who were better by all reasonable criteria. The issue of how to get the best people, methods, and ideas to also become the most successful is one of the greatest challenges of our time.
Examples of things that are popular and successful but not good... Twilight and organized religion. It's actually an interesting observation on the point of religion, cause if the consensus equals truth or quality principle where correct, then the biggest religion would invariably by the right one by default.

"But do the masses know how to efficiently alter distribution?"
The answer is out there but getting it to the masses is the challenge, there's a lot of disinformation, lies and propaganda to break through.
