not a bad idea, but needs improvements, even just to clean the big nasty out first you could filter it through like a cotton cloth/ Tshirt first, and use bigger bottles like 2liter, set up several of them i'd say at least filter it through 5 different ones so the last filtering is cleanest before boiling, i wouldn't recommend using the same bottle to filter several times on the same cup of water, use a totally separate cup for dipping out of yuck with.
on mine when I make one I want to make a cap for the bottom so that say I didnt have a storage container for the water I could store it in there and then when I get a storage container I could let the water out!
Man the ceramic micro-filters are getting cheaper all the time. The time and effort put into making a prsonal sand water filter just isnt worth it. LifeStraw, Katadyn, FirstNeed etc. The LifeStraw is only $20 in North America.
I live by the Rock River in Rockford, IL and the river is incredibly polluted. They say not to eat the fish, and make sure to wash your hands an hour after touching it. In which I'm guessing is cause of all the chemicals people have thrown in there. Cars have been found in there, my bike, but then again I live in a bad neighborhood. How would I be able to filter the water if it has chemicals in it???
However it is important for you to check out portable waters filters reviews to make comparison between each model and choose the best models that fit in for your consideration. After you find out which one which then you may purchase the one you like, but by doing so it is imperative for you to have a good criteria and tips to chose which one is the perfect portable water filter bottle.
I wonder why people don't listen or perhaps they are joking. It was mentioned on the video, that this is just for cleaning the water, but doe not purify or kill the germs. ******This is only for cleaning not purifing!******
You'll still need to boil your water. Be carful as to what water filters you use also. Many have limited use, like just knocking out the bad tasting water from your facet and don't always take care of what might kill you. Research, it is your life. Thanks great video!
you forgot the charcoal, also you should pour the dirty water into the filter with something else besides dipping the filter into the water. You have possible cross contamination doing it the way you did.
I think the point of this video is "Clear" not "Clean" water. The rock/dirt/leaf filter gets the debris out, and as you've stated before, requres boiling afterwards to get the water truly clean and ready to drink. The first few trial runs where the water was off colored was probably just washing the dirt off the sand/rocks. Also, just a thought, perhaps it'd be good to let the dirty water drip off the sides of the bottle before placing it over your cup at which point it drips into it. Good vid!
Wouldn't you want to take the bottle bottom you cut off and use it as a cup to scoop water into the filter rather than dip the whole filter into the water supply itself? It just seems like you would unnecessarily pick up debris and have it fall into your canteen cup without going through the filter first...just a question/comment.
If you're using this pre boil, then use leaf and sand that is all you really need. Find another bottle and poke holes in the bottom for pre filtering the water before sending it over the sand. Hope I never really have to do this for survival.
You should dip some grass in the water and then squeeze it over the top of the bottle. Its not smart to dip the bottle in the water. But its a very good idea. I have seen Bear Grylls or some of the other survivor people do the same stuff.
I think you have to realize people, that this is useful in a survival situation, NOT if you're going on a camping trip to a national park. I'm reading all these worst case scenarios of would if an animal pisses here or $hits there! would've water runs down the side? I think the guy here just got sick of reading stupid comments..lol. No, it's not a recipe for Sparkletts water. I don't think they'll be using that method anytime soon. But as a last resort or survival means, it's good to go.
As commented below- almost useless method! And for a second- if you took a sand where some animal has pissed, died, etc.- you are in a deep shit, even when you`ll boil the water. You must name it correctly as "MECHANICAL FILTRATION BEFORE BOILING" and say a few words about the sand.
personally, i would add some charcoal (burned wood) to help with the smell you mentioned ... but overall, that was still a nice demonstration for such a small water bottle ... too bad there wasn't a 2 liter bottle laying around , that would've allowed ya to use alot more filtering material. =]
you can buy 25lb bags of beans (black, pinto, and/or white beans) for $14-$16. I have sprouted these to make sure they were not irradiated. They are not and you can eat for pennies on the dollar and/or stock up if any disaster hits?? You do not have to be a member of the LDS-it is just like going to the store-very convenient-
Good luck~
**they have other dry bulk foods for sale to: wheat berries, sugar, dry milk, macaroni, flour etc..
you need at least a foot of sand (particularly quartz sand - which most sand is but not all that's in it IS it! Understand? Secondly, you would die doing it that way!! (maybe). You put your whole filtration system in the crappy water and let it drip right into the cup! That is DUMB! Why use a filter?! American soldiers were filtering their piss in the prior wars. You can do it your way without having to boil it, just use more sand and get it without spilling! Or your way + boiling as you said.
you have a missing ingrediant. Burnt carbon. you must take charcoal from the fire pit. This is the most important substance for nuetralizing many heavy metals & bacteria.
Concept is good but-----already mentioned was the water running down the outside contaminating the so called filtered water--also the sand that was added was from the diry contaminated stream bed. Rocks etc, have also been exposed to the polution. This filter will remove most sediments, but not harmful bacteria or chemicals. Not drinking the first cup or two would also be smart. Charcoal has been used for centurys for water purification because it absorbs certain chemicals--
You have alot of running down the side of the bottle. You should have used the bottom you cut off to pour through. You have a lot of suspect water. Could also add some carbon from campfire ashes. I would use your technique but good info on a start just needs to be dialed in.
Nice vid man, its the same concept as aquifers. Aquifers have good clean drinking water because all of the surface water soaks through the different layers of the earth and those layers each act like filters just like your filter...the sand, rock, and other layers.
PS. Can you drink from most safe looking streams (That animals or anything to cause concern aren't using with a few hundred yards) using this method of filtering with charcoal and boiling?
you should be fine after filtering and boiling the water(two min to be safe but others say just bring to boil) or if you dont want to boil it use chemicals to sanitize the water..i carry a small eye dropper of bleach in my kit, four eye drops will treat a half gallon of water but you have to wait 30 min to let the bleach work, you can use iodine in the same manner but i personally dont like the taste.
Yes this must be boiled but it leaves out all the visible particles which may make drinking unpleasant. Good work dude. Thanks for demonstrating to us !
you still need to get all the loose debri out as well as anything else that might be in there. if you had some charcoal you could put that at the bottom of the filter to help with the really really small stuff.
agreed....this is a great method to clean water before boiling however the most important element to this kind of filter is the charcoal if you dont have any make some first(you have to build a fire to boil water anyway)the carbon in the coal will absorb and kill alot of bacteria/virus in the water but you MUST still boil to kill off anything that gets through the filter the other great thing about coal is it takes the bad smell/taste out of your water....peace love and chicken grease...........
why would you contaminate your cup with the water from the first filtration, not smart second wheres the charcoal you should put a layer of partialy burn wood in the bottle as well
