As for materials, it depends. As you've guessed, I play guitar. Now I'm looking for a new guitar, and I think it will make me "happier". Why? I've started playing live electronic sets, I want to work guitar into it, and my current guitars are not very stable. Having one good reliable guitar will open new experiences for me.
I think people are like this. You have the "classic rock" people who need the "wider" experience of the smooth sounding power amp and the modern metal heads who get the rough sound of the preamp alone.
People have an internal and external component, but some people are designed in such a manner that the internal is more self sufficient, like those motherboards that have everything built onto them. People who require external "happiness" can't really just switch over like that.
This is a weird example, but guitar amplifiers have both a "pre amp" and a "power amp". Pre amp colours the sound the most and brings it up to line level, power amp is what makes it loud enough to go through a bit speaker.
Traditionally older, vintage amps, got their sound from overloading the "power amp". It had a particular distinctive sound, however it was impractical for bedroom jamming since it had to be loud. Many more modern amps try to get this tone from the "preamp" alone.
If I can't get where I want to go in life because of this, it's going to be upsetting and a positive attitude won't always remedy this. I think if anything the reason a lot of people are depressed is that they went into life holding out with a positive attitude for as long as they could, and it didn't work out for them.
Some people are more complete "in themselves". In reality, a person is again partially a social construct. Some people inherently rely more on the external.

Today had an "experience" with an office and well, when I left all PO'd, this video came to mind about three~four weeks ago. And while I couldn't remember the specific content, the message of being positive and happy came through and let me calm down when I was driving away.
(I'm gonna skip most of the part where I bought donuts and cookies).
But I also noticed that letting one's mood get pulled around really puts a damper on the voice. Couldn't maintain any other personality for a while.
I have to agree, happiness isn't about stuff....don't get me wrong stuff is nice but it will never make you happy and you can't take it with you.....some lucky guy is gonna end up with a very cool woman in their lives.....keep it up :D I love your attitude :D
Awesome advice Candi :) I agree so much! I am a very positive woman and was not so positive before transitioning. I love life now that I can be myself, and I believe people can see that and feel it from me and it affects them too. I tend to avoid other transfolks only because there seems to be such a huge tendency towards depression, resentment, jealousy, and other negative emotions from the bulk of them. It is like you said, we have this awesome opportunity to remake ourselves. Do it! :)
Good point. I decided long ago to concentrate on the inward transition. Better yet, I decided to use that strength to tackle some basic personality issues. Actually...still am. Always growing, always learning. :)

I had my place robbed and ransacked/destroyed while I was out of town once. I lost almost everything. BUT... I found it very liberating. Now, I dont NEED possessions. I still have things, and of course, my EXTENSIVE weapons collection. But I have a LOT less now than I had before, and I am ok with that. And I dont run a rat race to acquire new stuff.
I am happy cause it is better to laugh, than to cry.
I have a happy life too. I learned to be content with what I have. Suddenly more things came my way, even though I didn't want them and tried my best to decline them. I learned to appreciate the little wealth I have. Suddenly I find wealth coming my way, even though I do nothing to pursue it. I just want to live a simple life. Thankfully the mental and physical challenges I have keeps my mind stable.
Amazing how many people do not know that the choice to be happy in life is one that they have control over. We are each responsible for our own happiness in life. Many times, in order to make the changes for greater long term happiness, we must face the people who do not contribute to our own happiness. Good advice tho.

When you turn to Love, you will be a happy person. It will effect people around you. The "letting go" part from Buddhist teachings is also refered to "detachement" in some other teachings, but its a good one because that is where it starts. I agree... I used to be so insecure & feel like I had to fit in with everybody & I was jealous, but over time I just let it go & now I dont give a crap what people think of me. I guess thats a part of why Im not materialistic... I don't care how people view me. I don't need to look a certain way for anyone else. That said I cant wait til my expensive camera arrives in the mail :D but Ive been waiting to buy it for years lol
