For those wondering. This was performed on Live TV - February 5, 1982 on ABC's weekly late night comedy series "Fridays" - which was similar to SNL. Fridays had a number of great bands perform live that did not appear on SNL - 1980-2.
Great Song and glad that you will be appearing in VEGAS. I drove by your Downey house yesterday and saw the front door open, but was not sure if you still live there. Keep up the good work.
I saw The Blasters live in Seattle back in the late 80's in a small venue. They were fantastic! I've had the album Non Fiction since then. I just picked up the CD on Amazon.com. Sounds great, brings back some memories.
Give them credit for good taste, but this is one where they have the close the book on it after Little Willie John put it down. Like All Along the Watchtower after Hendrix did it. Don't go there.
@HowBrownPhiladelphia Just an opinion on a version of one song mate, that's all. If you actually listened to the other one ("Little Willie Whatever" suggests maybe you haven't) and disagree, no worries. I'll check out more by the Blasters btw.
You all judge which is better: watch?v=qWRjus3end4
anyone remember "streets of fire"? classic 80's movie starring Mike Pare, Diane Lane, and William Dafoe. Anyway, the Blaster make a cameo and sing "One Bad Stud". Awesome song, for an awesome movie in an awesome decade!
Artists who consistently lived up to the extremely high standards of the founders of rock and roll were increasingly difficult to find by the early 1980s. However, the Blasters did so with remarkable regularity and indeed are one of a tiny number of bands or solo artists whose output is worthy to be placed in the same league as their inspirations. Little Willie John was just about as good as it got. But then again, so are the Blasters.
Footcar: You are entirely correct, sir. I saw and totally enjoyed the Blasters with the following on guitar: Hollywood Fats (dancing fat man!), Greg "Smokey" Hormel, James Intveld (who was amazing! Not that the other guys were any slouches), Keith Wyatt, and finally Dave Alvin in a reunion show. Oh, I loved that band.
This was their one time on Saturday night live. Two great numbers & the audience, rightfully so, ate it up. I felt like I went to R&R heaven when I saw them in Dec of 2002 when they were on their "reunited" tour. I had goosebumbs for 2 hrs as well as jr was at attention the whole time.Greatest live ("bar") band ever. Wowser!
@DEEP177 What ever- you have clearly never seen the Blasters live. And I'm talking hey-day 1980's-mid 90's Those cats were the tightest group of musicians on earth for their style of music. Much respect to you Brother but I 'm not talking shit. I know music and them boys was it for that. Respect to Little Willie John and all. Different time, different place. Rock on!
anyone ever seen the christmas special with the heat and cold misers, their little helpers sing a song with the same beat..."He's mister heat miser, hes mister 101"..."He's mister cold miser, he's mister ten below"
is this performance lip sync'ed?....it sounds very familiar to the recorded (studio) version.....i wish u could buy the studio version of this song on iTUNES....but ....iTUNES s*cks a*s.
I doubt it is. If you listen to the drums in the studio version, there's a bunch of things you can't hear that show up in this video, I'm guessing because of bad micing.
I was at the Queen Concert in 1980 at the LA Forum and at least in LA, the Blasters werent boo'd...The crowd did shout for Queen throughout the set..but then again, what do you expect. ...Goood show all around....still Queen are musical Titans and kick the Blasters ass just with the talent in just one of their pinkies.....now then and forever...I like Dave Alvin, but I'll take Exene, Mr. J. Doe, Bonebrake and Billy Zoom of "X" over the Blasters any day...
Ms. Diva, The Blasters opened for Queen on the west coast leg of the tour, that is San Diego is a 2 hours drive south from Los Angeles. The opened in both cities for Queen...I also remember now, that they were indeed unannounced and when the lights came down, everyone was expecting Queen to come on stage...Google the shows and you will see...I was 15 druing that show...My memory still serves me...Im not that old..yet...lol
While the Queen tour served to introduce the Blasters to audiences outside LA, the experience was often nightmarish. "Sometimes, we wouldn't be anywhere in the ads. Then at the show, the lights would go down, and 4,000 people are screaming, expecting to see Queen. They're all going berserk, and four guys from Downey get onstage. The pack mentality couldn't handle it," Alvin says with a laugh. "Some of those shows got pretty ugly."
You know, that was stupid on my part to slam the Blasters..There's no excuse for slamming a band lwhen my only legacy is adding comments on YT ..lol..I like the Blasters but got defensive being a Queen fan too....The Blasters execute an amazing sound like Jason and the Scorchers and Rank & File, ..I think we should enjoy music in its pure state and not compare whats better or worse just like you wouldnt compare Mozart to Beethoven,,they're all different & should be appreciated as that. Cheers..
Seems like music from two different worlds to me....Just sayin....I wouldnt doubt they got boo'ed....not everyone shares a wide variety of music tastes like many do....you go see Elvis and you get say Perry Como....

the Blasters,,,,,,Wierd Al Yankovic,,,,, The Carpenters

1. THE BLASTERS
2. Weird Al
3. The Carpenters.
The Carpenters' house was about 8 blocks from the house where Dave & Phil Alvin grew up. Right near Florence and Lakewood.
