I don't know, it seems to me that it depends on how the writers would want to do that. Although, Moffat and Gatiss are HUGE fans of the original books so I really don't think there will be any romance in the series at all.

Holmes did ask the King of Bohemia for Adler's photgraph, true. But to me, it always seemed he was only amazed by her wit, and how she outsmarted him. I really don't believe he was in love her. In the books, he seems mostly asexual to me.

IMHO there are no basis in SCAN or anywhere in the Canon to believe SH ever felt any 'tender emotion' for IA.

While it's true that 'In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex' JW clarifies 'It was not that he felt any emotion akin to love for Irene Adler'. And I honestly cannot see any rational reason why I shouldn't agree with him... There's grudging respect for the woman who outwitted him, and that's that.

@NahShizzums It's absurd to try to get into the heads of two fictional characters, but the VA had different notions regarding sexuality and same-sex relationships. Exclusive emotional bonds between men were common and probably sometimes included feelings we'd qualify as romantic by today's sensibility.

I don't think romance between BBC SH and JW would be untrue to the original works and to the culture that fostered them: it would just be a legit modern-day interpretation and development.

Um, Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler were never romantically attached in the original story. He respected her because she was the only person whoever outwitted him. The idea of a romantic relationship between the two was only featured in the 2009 film, with Robert Downey Jr.

Once his test experiment worked, Holmes now gets mysterious phone calls and text messages several times a week, always when his hands are full, of course. "Watson, make yourself useful and answer that, would you?" Eventually the phone gradually moves into less and less subtle places seemingly on its own accord... Holmes in his absentmindedness always loses track of where he places it. You know how it is, focusing on the case and all that... "You just missed it, Watson, a bit lower."
