@vagine26 Where did you get that idea from? not all companies are horrible like the rumors circulating the internet say they are. I still think that I can't believe I work doing my hobby and get pay well for it.
@LevelArtist It's not an idea... it's personal experience. Are you saying you *enjoy* crunch? Or are you one of the rare and lucky few that actually get paid for it?
@LevelArtist Also those aren't 'rumours' when entire studios' wives club together and denounce the pricks that have turned their husbands and boyfriends into work drones, when people blow the whistle and come out against former employers... those are first hand accounts, and they're very real; and often have lawsuits to prove it.
@vagine26 If you read my comment you will notice I said "not all companies are horrible" I understand where you coming from; a few large studios are out to make a profit and don't necessarily care much for their staff.
@LevelArtist ... and I can understand where you're coming from. Again though, from personal experience it's not the minority that treat their staff poorly, it's the majority of game developers that exploit their staff. There's not many studios that can claim to have no unpaid crunch time, and even fewer that can say there's genuinely no crunch at all. I don't know how old you are or how long you've been in the industry, but honestly you sound like I did. Give it a couple of years and you'll see.
@vagine26 I'm actually fortunate to work at a studio that has treated me very well, any extra hours I put in are on my own accord and never once have I been forced into mandatory unpaid overtime.
@vcortis Honestly I'm pleased for you, it's good that decent artists are able to find studios that will look after them. My experience of the industry has been pretty extreme (to the extent i can't actually discuss it due to a legal settlement...), and that came very very shortly after doing many hours of good-will overtime. Just never make the mistake of letting them take it for granted. I'll never do another hour unpaid again. Burned.
@vcortis could I just clarify what you said there about extra hours and not being forced? It seems to me that what you're really saying between the lines is that there is overtime 'available', but that it's not forced upon anyone in particular? Do you see that if none of you guys would be willing to work for free, at some point they'd either have to rework the schedule/game design or indeed force/pay overtime? It's not ok to work for free, it devalues every developer including yourself.

Beautiful work, loved the City Alley scene particularly.. reminded me a little of Deus Ex. Glad to hear this got you a job, you deserve it. That also gives me hope.
@vcortis I wish someone like you could teach people such things as texture techniques... The people on youtube don't seem to know what they're doing :(
@MrBlazzzzer I'm with 38 Studios currently working on their MMO codenamed Copernicus. Hopefully I'll be able to share some of the wonderful artwork we've been creating soon.
All of this lovely work just to get into an industry that will treat you most likely like dirt. Feel sorry for ya kid.

What did you do to get the bonsai Tree from step 1 to step 2? Is it displacement?
PR0DIGY09 1 month ago
@PR0DIGY09 Yes it's using a displacement map, not something really useable in a game sense. Direct X11 is a step in the right direction though.

The weeds are cards/image planes. I find that's the easiest, least expensive form of rendering out ground foliage like grass/weeds.
vcortis 1 year ago
Very Nice. Are the weeds sprites or image planes or paint effects?
