  • This video is a real gem .. and this song is a masterpiece

  • I love how Joyce starts to count them in but then stops when Moz says "...if you can..." and starts again!

  • You can learn all you need to know about life from the Smiths.

  • Others conquered love, but I ran...

  • Socrate, Plato, Saint Augustin, Michaelangelo, Da Vinci, Mozart, Beethoven, Newton, Shakespeare, Pele and then there was The Smiths.

  • The instrumental is so subtly sublime it's fucking incredible.

  • one of my many Smiths songs.beautiful

  • I love the smith i love moz

  • dope!

  • That crowd is fucking limp! I'd have jumped up and hugged moz.

  • @jacobbielarski There wasn't even a whisper when he named the song...

  • @jacobbielarski Dude, hardly anyone knew who they were in 1983--including you. It's retarded of you to pretend like you are a bigger fan. These people at least went to the show. Where the fuck were you?

  • @damienmetalwind ...I see the Smiths, and I see a dispassionate crowd. That's about as much thought as I put into it. Don't get too technical here.

  • @jacobbielarski There's nothing technical about it. You can't expect the crowd to be chanting for "The Queen is Dead" or "How Soon is Now," or "Stop Me..." The world was barely familiar with "This Charming Man" in 1983. I think that explains a lot of the crowd's reaction. It's quite stupid to chastise a crowd from 1983 for not treating a band like the superstars they would become after writing a few more songs.

  • Accept yourself, if you can...

    Genius!

  • @MorbidSaint39 accept yourself...if you ..can .....ouch.... that hit home... mozza the wordsmith at work...lol

  • and tiiime is agaiinst me noow......<3

  • I was born in '81 so I was too young to see them but discovered them in '99,

I bought a stack of there Cd's, and they have a special place in my collection,

No one comes close too the Smiths & no one ever will, Unique singing voice,Unique music, Artful clever witty lyrics and some excellent guitar work.

    Legend Morrissey

  • smiths for life<3

  • my watch doesn't keep time

  • Look at all the crowd just standing there gathering dust.......

  • 1:00

    Johnny is so awesome.

  • Such a brilliant, brilliant song. Morrissey and The Smiths Forever!!!!!!!!

  • Johnny Marr could make anyone sound like they matter.

  • "Others conquered love - but I ran. I sat in my room and I drew up a plan"

When I was in high school, I literally did just that. I read books on how to be charming. I even took notes. At the time, I thought I was at my most profound. Funny how those days were my most awkward and romantically unsuccessful of my life. Then I heard this song and was shocked that Morrissey had described ME. So I took his advice and things have been great. Accepting yourself isn't easy, but it really works.

  • @SclafaniBagni Same here..

  • i sat in my room and drew up a plan. oh but plans can fall through as so often they do, and time is against me now, ahhhh how many can relate to that lyric...(i wonder) when will you except yourself :) goodbye

  • bloody amazing! and that rickenbaker owns!

  • That little melody bridge in 1:00 is so wonderful.

  • Marr is a hero

  • The best live set i've ever seen

  • Damn, they're so tight!

  • what a shit crowd, fucking wasters

  • @toweronepower i agree, but awe would be understandable as well

  • AMAZING!!

  • I wonder if Bez got his inspiration from this performance.

  • Thanks alot for this posting! Wow, the third live performance. So cool to see it now.

  • @doobiescoo1 14th live performance

  • I accepted many years ago that there will never be another band fit to lace the boots of Morrissey, Marr, Rourke and Joyce.

  • Before 83, and after 2009 that statement will apply till the end of time

  • Why is the crowd not cheering?

  • "Goodbye"

    LOL

not one for standing on ceremony is mr. morrissey.

  • Well this was their third live performance and the audience wasn't exactly going crazy over them.

I'd say he just wanted to get it over with.

  • @Ulmeyda08

    14th live performance.

  • Time is against me now... Preciselly, No wonder that Morrissey is such a legend for the Rock Music...

  • the smiths are the only band that have ever mattered

  • Isn't that the Clash's catch phrase lol.

  • tottally agree with you...best fucking comment i ever red in yt!!

  • @01afletcher purely faultless!

  • @01afletcher well.. erm not exactly true, thers definately 5 that are of worthy mention!! any takers???....

  • @01afletcher you forgot about joy division

  • @tranquil87 not so much as moz

  • @tranquil87 the plice either

  • @01afletcher Truer words...

  • @01afletcher obviously you have never heard Richard D James, you nincompoop!!

  • @01afletcher Plus the Beatles and Genesis

  • I cant believe they haven't even been nominated for the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame! Hell, Morrissey deserves to be in there as a solo artist as well!

  • that is so fucking true i guess they just

dont know what good music is

  • This one got to be the most brilliant song ever written by mankind...

  • i really like reality

  • la gente sotto è totalmente impassibile :|

  • brilliant! love this one, going watchin the legend that is morrissey in november! cant wait! wish i could see the smiths live back in the day :D

  • It is amazing that this band was never huge, a la Britney Spears-esque phenomenon like, but people are still listening years and years later, discovering and enjoying their tunes. Wonder if the music of today will survive the same way???

  • Bands/artists that are big don't get remembered very much (Exceptions exist example, The Beatles), for what they are, The Smiths had very very good commercial success, and a very good critical success, both at once are hard to achieve, they will be remembered for a long time

  • I just love Mozza's hair!!!

  • oh but dreams have a knack of just not coming true:(

  • born 9 yrs to late

    i love this genius band

  • lol

    Same here.

  • so many bands today and back then with absolutely nothing to say, just trying to make the words rhyme,,and then there was the smiths,,what a contrast...

  • Oh, no! I'm going to get aids off gay euphemisms.

    You're pathetic.

  • 16?

That comment kinda means nothing. Lol!

  • its spelt euthamism (:

  • i am sick i am dull and i am plain ,,too true,,ill add to that ,,and girls dont like me,,,,because im unloveable

  • stop whining, bitch

  • this makes as much snese as religion

  • the smiths have the best lyrics...

    if only they would reunite

  • I just adore this

  • me too. :)

  • Check out Marr at 1:00... too cool!

  • The 80's Rock & Roll headsnap has it's proper place. It'll never die.

  • i love it.

  • Ive always liked singing along to this one,

  • one of my favs as well, great lyrics, and yes this song spoke volumes to me when i heard for the first time when i was 16, great lyrics and great guitar, music that will never age,,smiths were very unique.best song writer in history bar none,,morissey.

  • this crowd is dead :(

  • True, but I don't consider this a song to be jumping around with. They could sing along, though.

  • and time is against me now.

  • "i am sick and i am dull and i am plain"- fantastic!

  • the people in the crowd had no idea who they were looking at .....fuck! they look confused...lol its the smiths! (easily said 25 years later i know ..i know...) fucking dance bitches! ha

  • What an amazing song. It might be Smiths best.

  • Time is against me now

  • EXCELENTE CANCION....

  • why is this guy singen about me?! weeiiiird

  • I sat in my room and I drew up a plan

    but plans can fall through

    AS SO OFTEN THEY DO

    dazzling.

  • I love the line before it 'Others conquered love, but I ran'

  • I'll say it again - The Smiths' best song.

  • But I once had a dream and it never came true

And time is against me now

    Brilliant.

  • Probably my favorite Smiths song.

  • What a performance,moz legend

  • Others conquered love - but I ran

I sat in my room and I drew up a plan

but plans can fall through as so often they do

and time is against me now

  • havent we all done that and felt that way. morrissey what a wordsmith and wise man...the lyric always makes me smile and feel sad at the same time

  • smile and feel sad at the same time ...well said....

  • how young were they here, such a great band,

  • I had the barnet like that and a similar grey baggy shirt, looked a right knob i did.

  • that shirt is light blue lol

  • I still looked a knob whatever colour it ws.LOL

  • lol!

  • Their Best Song.

  • it's cool that moz sings about me

  • It was 25 years ago..and the music is stll giving me shivers..this song was on "this Charming man B-side EP" ( I still have it..)

  • @BorlandRIP7 amazing that they put a gem of a track as a b side. Its one of my fav Smiths songs. Absoloute genius combination of vocal, lyrics and guitar melody. Great rhythm section on this as well

  • not too sure bout the yelps

  • for music that is better than it sounds :)

  • hehe..i'm liking moz's siouxiesque yelps!

  • A pop song with content. They were so original!!

  • One of the Smiths song that cemented my love for them. Why? Well, because Morrissey is singing about me. It's like he's singing my life.

  • my life too

  • ALSO! " I am sick and I am dull and I am grey, oh how i dearly would love to get carried away!"

  • Why are the crowd so shite. The Smiths are one of the best bands ever. Morrissey and Marr just legendary.

"I sat in my room and I drew up a plan, oh but plans can fall through and so often they do, but time is against me now" how amazing are those two lines!!!!!

  • good, good group

  • I think the crowd just were shocked. They been listening to Duran Duran and other 80's shit music. The Smiths hit them hard lol...and the rest is history!

  • yeah, this is pretty accurate

  • An early gig of the most important 80's band ever

  • the crowd suckss they were so privilege to see the smiths i would love to see the smiths

  • this song is brilliant! i haven't heard it before and am ashamed of myself! morrissey and marr forever!

  • Thanks for posting, saw The Smith's in 83 and this really brought the memories back.

    Thankyou

"Immerse the babies head in a river the colour of lead." it's my favourite.

  • GREAT!... 1983 at the Hacienda?!!... Johnny Marr is 19 years old!!

"I sat in my room and I drew up a plan..."

I know what you mean flummoxed27.

Smiths are the best band ever.

  • This song was my anthem for so long and it means so very much to me. Then again, I could say exactly the same for many more Smiths songs. Best band ever, bar none!

  • Very nice, great show it looked.Words are smooth as silk too.

  • Love Marr's moves round 1:00-1:06.

    And of course Moz' screams.

  • This is perfect for a live performance,

    EVERYONE was spot on.

  • I agree that Marr has a truly unique style. As Jimi Hendrix was one of the best lead guitarist ever Johnny Marr is one of the rythymic guitarists ever. Smiths4ever

  • I would say marr is one of the melodically greatest guitarists as well. A genious really.

  • It's amazing how fantastic Johnny Marr's guitar playing sounds. What a genius. What a joy to see stuff like this - thanks.

  • It is hard to believe that this is 24 years ago. Morrissey was so prophetic, gifted and wise at such a tender age, and he still is.

Love his quiff and hip swivel too!

  • unbelievable! i would have loved to have seen them live. kind of hard considering I'm 14.....

  • Anthem of a generation ! You've got all the spirit of the Smiths in this song.
