  • I have an x-arcade running into a plasma with a hyperspin setup on the pc inside the cab, Plays very nicely.

  • I got an x-arcade and I love but I only play street fighter and mortal kombat on it any suggestion of games?

  • @kevlaj23 The Metal Slug series is great. Other personal fun games I like are Aliens vs Predator, The Punisher, 3 Wonders, TMNT, TMNT Turtles in Time.

  • @moomert1 thanks for the suggestion :)

  • hay im just wondering, if this tricks your computer into thinking u have a keyboard, can you still have a keyboard plugged in that functions correctly ?

  • @CrownedRNB yes you can

  • i used xkeys for my keyboard emulator when i was building a flight simulator, but i like how that ipac seems to go hand and hand with the mame software... Good video by the way..nice steady hand and to the point video.

  • Very informative, clear and easy to understand info. Thanks for putting this up. Would love to see more of your video pn arcade building.

  • Thanks man this doesn't seem to complicated after all. Building the cabinet might be the most time consuming and choosing good dimensions. Do you guys build them in sectional pieces to take apart to fit threw doors?

  • @redgeeteeeye I myself dont build cabs to often anymore. Mostly just for friends. There are some companies on the web which sell arcade cabinet kits. They arrive usually via fed ex or ups in 3 large boxes. They are really easy to put together.

This video was mainly intended to show people how easy it is to put together a control panel.

  • @moomert1 I can understand why you might want the ball for games like tiger woods but what games would you use that spinning knob I see on some Control panels?

  • @redgeeteeeye The knob would be used for games such as Tempest and Forgotten Worlds.

  • What would be a good led controller if you wanted led buttons?

  • @redgeeteeeye try the website groovygamegear . I believe they will have what you are looking for.

  • great video. im muchl ess scared to build my control panel now

  • @throwdown47 I'm glad my video could help. Making a control panel is really much easier then it seems.

  • just hack the keyboard!!

  • Very informative, thanks!

  • Hi, I'm just wondering if this will also work for u64emu? I'm planning on building a Killer Instinct/Killer Instinct 2 cabinet. Unfortunately, my computer, when using MAME, can't play either game very well (it's very laggy and the sound is very choppy), so I'm stuck U64emu. Thanks!

  • great explanation about the ipac, i only have one question, how do you wire LED pusbuttons to ipac? do you just hook em up or do you need extra voltage for them to work.

  • @MegaJstylez I believe you hook up the wiring to the little prongs on the lower portion of the ipac

  • Quick Question, on the iPac, what are the 1A, 1B and 2A, 2 B inputs for?

  • @level42jeff I think their just miscellaneous for example a menu button etc. or other buttons you may need

  • @Morpun Thanks, I was hoping that was the case, as I plan to add pinball buttons on the side of my cabinet. Thanks.

  • I got a question. I'm planning to build a cabinet. I'd like to have the best of both worlds. Xbox 360 and Mame. I was planning to rip apart 2 wired xbox360 controllers solder the connections to my CP. Then to play Mame I'd then just swith the USB to the computer. First is that possible? Great video by the way.

  • @Fibr3Optix In theory it should work. However I am not 100% sure. You may need to do as seen in this video for the mame part and then add more wiring, soldered from the push button connections, to the wiring for the torn apart xbox 360 controllers.

  • Where can you buy a wire like that displayed at 7:15 ("daisy chain") for the ground wires? Could you please help me, i'm building a mame controller and this would come in handy. thank you

  • @SoulSnatching If your building a cp, buy a jamma harness from a place called jammaboards. Then just cut the wire you need. That is what I did.

  • hi is there a usb for pc

  • Great vid, an excellent resource for the mame builder!

One question, how wide did you drill your joystick holes?

  • Thanks for the vid, fantastic. It took some of the more complicated and scary looking videos and made it really accessible.

  • thanks a lot :D i was worried i might have to have some saudering skillz

  • whats the coin slot for?

  • do they still sell the jamma harness

  • @roxter71 yes they do

  • If you order a harness for the wires only would you basically just take scissors and chop all the wires off at once?

  • @SupahSonic7734 Well I just cut off the wires I need one at a time. It really doesn't matter either way

  • I have all of my wires hooked up to my I-PAC.... Now it worked but I had to reinstall MAME and now it acts like it does not recognize what is what.... Now before a black box appeared on my screen and it had me list what is what.... Can you please help me to get it working again... FYI I am running Windows XP & MAME 1.68

  • Hey i enjoyed watching your video and i would like to build a single player control panel for mame i don't have a cabinet just a laptop i use to play mame and i'm tired of using a controller i would like to build a arcade stick or control panel a small one mind u can u give me directions on how to get started as far as tools equipment etc.

  • yeah seriously your video so helpful compared to everyone elses :) when you download mame do you have to set it up with the buttons connected to the ipac? how do they know what to press?

  • @Dakatue well unless things have changed with newer versions of mame, mame uses sort of default settings. If you wire up like I showed you in this vid, you really should have no issues.

  • I might sound like a noob, but where are you supposed to buy the cables from...the cables that connect the microswitch to the i-pac. WHere do you buy the daisy chains? And what is the cable called

    Thanks

  • @koolio1924 just order a "jamma harness". I buy them from an online site called jammaboards. The wires already have the daisy chains and the wires have the quick connects attached. Just cut the wire from the jamma harness and install as showed on this vid. If you have anymore questions just send me a message.

  • @moomert1 Once the buttons and joysticks are connected to the i-pac...do you have to configure which button controls what? In other words, do you have to configure the controls using a Frontend downloaded on the computer?

  • @pwn1997 any of the "microswitches" can be up down left or right. Just install your joystick on your control panel. Then wire up to the proper areas on the IPac.

  • im happy i use my wired xbox 360 joystick

  • How Did You Get The Coin Slot

  • do can u tell me were u get the single wire i found the daisy chain but i cant find the single wire for the buttons

  • thanx dude, I looked at many videos that were not helpful, then after watching your explanation its all clear. Again, many thanks from Australia.

  • @streaker30 Glade my video could help. The main reason I made this video is because a lot of other vids sucked at the time. I wanted to make a nice simple vid that could help people.

  • Thank you soo much for this vid!

I was wondering about making my LED-Pushbuttons lit permanently. Could I daisy chain all the the 5V connectors on the LED-pushbuttons to ONE 5v prong on the Ipac or is it one LED-button per 5v prong?

Thanks again for a great video! Extremely helpfull :)

  • @bjornson79 I'm really not sure. I was never into LED pushbuttons so I never tried it. It might work with all led's coming from one 5v

  • Thanks alot. Good video. Very detailed, thats what we need, you didnt just say "do this and do that", you showed how to do it. Well done. Thanks.

  • Great video!

  • Thanks!

  • Does it work just as well to use a USB Arcade controller and use it for mame?

  • @ryanredz that I am not sure of. Maybe the newer versions of mame. However older versions are supposed to only use "keyboards". So you need to use an IPac or Jpac to trick the computer into thinking the control panel is a keyboard

  • @moomert1 I actually have a USB Gamepad for PS3 and plugged it into my computer and it actually fine with mame. I think I should probably just buy a USB arcade controller as it's probably easier to set up!

  • thanks you solwed me some more problems.

Now i don`t need to mess with a spare keyboard :P

  • perfect video just what i needed thanks really usefull :D

  • @burgerfadge glad my vid could help

  • Great video man! Exactly what i wanted to know.

I do have one question though, do you know how to setup a button that manually turns on/off the computer you're running?

  • @Raptinox unfortunatly I dont know exactly how to do that. Try a youtuber named YourMKArcadeSource .

  • @moomert1

much appreciated, thanks for the quick reply.

  • @Raptinox Actually its pretty easy, you need to figure out which pins on the mother board conects to the switch on the front of the computer your using, then sodder the button to those pins. see, when u turn on and off a computer from the switch, eather way, its actually a button, not a switch, so you can easily put one together.

  • thanks for the info !!!!

  • @RaulBillieJean glad it could help

  • nice video

  • Thanks so much for this video. This is just what I needed! Good instructions, unlike other vids about the same thing.

  • @flexyldy glad my video could help.

  • @moomert1 Oh, and one more thing. Where did you get the wire to connect the button or joystick to the IPAC?

  • @flexyldy just order a jamma harness from ebay. But away the jamma connector and just use the wires

  • @moomert1 what if i just use normal wires?

  • @moomert1 where do you connect the track ball?

  • @SuprHibby on this unit you can not connect a track ball. What I did was connect a trackball via USB for my mame cabinet

  • @moomert1 thank you couple more things what do the buttons on the side do and how do you wire a exit button?

  • @SuprHibby on my panel those buttons do nothing. However you can wire them up to do anything you want. As far as an exit button, in mame, you can have any button you want to use as an "exit". First decide what button you want to use as "exit". THen in mame, press tab and this will bring up a menu which will allow you to decide what button you want to use as "exit"

  • thanks for you replkies, it works on mala fe, still having difficulties with maximus, i can toggle left and right in maximus to view an emulator but cant select them to start a rom(game) ill just have to persist or stick with mala fe, maximus is so much better though. thanks again for your assistance

  • Hi thanks for your video. i have purchased the Ipac, I have connected all the wires as you have explained (very straight forward ). when i start my unit it doesnt recognize the fire button (1sw) etc. sometimes the joysticks toggles left and right, once you switch the pc off it loses its settings and nothing works. Im at a loss here i thought it was virtually plug and play. i have my keyboard connected too, im wondering if this could be causing the issue.

  • @breakdancer1967

you may have a defective Ipac. I have purchased 3 Ipacs and nevr had any issues such as that. Your keyboard connected to the Ipac should have no effect in terms of your errors. Are you using this for MAME or another game program?

  • @moomert1, yes, im using MAME, im also using sanwa joysticks, thanks for your time, i may buy another i pac. thanks for your time and videos

  • @moomert1 ,on another website, it states "When a custom codeset is used, its not stored in the EEPROM. Once powered off these settings will be lost and it will revert to MAME settings". would you know how i can save the settings?

  • @breakdancer1967 you can store your mame settings by pressing F2 on your keyboard when you enter a game. Once you press F2, you will come to a screen in which you can decide what buttons do what functions. Then you save the settings there. Even after you turn the game off, the settins will still be saved.

  • Great vid for people starting out, i've wired 5 cabs didn't know you can use the ipac for the extra volts. good job

  • What a piece of junk you have there my friend. Make a real cabinet,

  • @crip102468 obviously you missed the concept of this video.

  • this video was a big help. thanx

  • @GILakaGP3 glad my video could help

  • Where do you get the "daisy chain" wire?

  • @Lazylvy just order a jamma harness. Most places that sell jamma harness' will have the harness with the daisy chain. The other wire from the harness you can also use on your CP

  • @moomert1 Thank you very much :)

  • hey bra, would this work on a pc? as i wana make one to play all my roms like street fighter etc,

  • @AlifeletiLatu Yes this will work.

  • even though it says "player 1 start" or "player 1 up", can you still switch button assignments in MAME? example: switch "player 1 button 1" to "player 2 button 1"

  • @REpsycho yes that is correct

  • Hi MOOMERT1 . This is Carlos from Spain , Well I was wondering who did you get the wire and where from? , I try to get this type of wire (I think is 0.50 mm section) but it was very dificult to me to find this type of wire . I when to diferents electrical and electronics stores but I couldn't find this type of wire . I can even see you've got diferents colors . Did you ge it from any online shop? . Thanks a lot mate (hope understand my english) . BB

  • best damn video ever thank u so much no one knows a got damn thing about mame buidling controls in detail like you man!!!!!!!! made my day.

  • @turtlepug glad my video could help

  • thank you so much!

  • Great video dude, im currently building a mame cabinet and i wasn't sure about how to wire up an i-pac so was gonna go for a usb fight stick instead, but its 2 in the morning here and i can't sleep and decided to look into the i-pac and found your video and its made it a lot clearer for me so thanks, nice to see someone make a nice clear video and get straight to the point :)

  • @Snestastic glad my video could help.

  • can you use the mame control panel for computer games?

  • @infinitylord08 truthfully I do not know. I never played "computer games" on my comp. I only played games via MAME

  • Also, do you program the IPAC or JPAC on the PC your using for mame before or after you actually wire it up? Or can you use any PC to program it?

  • @presicion25 just wire it up. Everything will be set as long as the other end of the wires go to the correct "terminals'. You can always make changes in MAME if you want to make adjustments.

  • @moomert1

I'm building my first MAME CP and found your tutorial VERY useful, but I did have some questions I was hoping you could clarify for me. At 6:03 you plug the wire onto the top prong of the button. Did that lip come with the button or is that something I can purchase at a hardware store, and do any wires from the hardware store work? Like the ones you can ask them to cut for you? Thanks again for a very thorough walkthrough.

  • @Namurashi if your talking about the cherry switch (white part) then that comes with the button. As far as wiring, just order a jamma harness and cut the wire you need and throw away what you dont need. If you buy wire from the store chances are it will not have the quick connects. If you buy a harness the quick connects will be attached to one end already. It makes it alot easier to build your CP.

  • @moomert1 Oh I see. Cool, thanks for that. Are the wires for the Jamma harness long enough for them or is there a certain wire that I can purchase that will be longer?

  • @Namurashi the wires from the harness will be long enough

  • Nice panel. Im trying to figure out if i should do something similar to your setup with an IPAC or get the bartop kit from mameroom. I bought a JPAC, but my PC doesnt put out a 15KHZ signal and all i got was a scrambled picture in my candy cabinet. So, I may try a bartop kit from mameroom for now. Although, X Arcade has adapters for old systems that go along with their control panels. Any Ideas?

  • This is kind of a noob question but what kind ov wires are you using?

  • @Oneofthosecoolkids

Oh I see i can just get a Jamma harness, complete with daisy chain and all.

  • @Oneofthosecoolkids yep exactly

  • You likely covered this, do the 4 way joysticks work for 8 way too or do you have to go optical as you have? On the optical if that is the way to go, can you make these 4 way? Curious as I understand there is some value in having 4 way only avail for pacman etc. Thx - great vid.

  • @bryanbriegel There are some joysticks that can go from 4 way to 8 way w/ a simple adjustment. Optical joysticks are pretty much "8 way". 4 way sticks are definetly better for games such as pac man

  • With the setup you have in this video, how could you also add a spinner control to this for use in something like tempest? Is it possible to have that hooked up to mame at the same time? I'm also thinking I would want a joystick like the one from the old Tron game with a fire button on it to use in conjuction with the spinner. Is this possible to add with all the other controls on the board with another usb interface? Thanks!

  • Sorry for bothering you but I believe in another 1 of your videos you said about connecting you panel to your ps3. Wondering what adapter was needed for it. And if it was required to have a usb i-pac2 or the ps/2 i-pac2.

  • @Sho81

That is correct. The adapter can be purchased at Ultimarc. The adapter is used with a ps/2 I pac 2. I have a video on it.

  • That was great. You actually helped people in your how to video unlike most who post a how to build a controller video and show them building it in FFW. Thanks man.

  • man, this is nice. now i understand whats the function of interface.

  • Might be a little silly to ask but i've searched far and wide (mkay only 10 mins of google) and I can't seem to find those god forsaken daisy chain connectors...

    Any insight ? ^^

  • @Santrielus

you can buy a jamma harness from jammaboards. Cut off what you need and save the rest. Or you can always make yourself a daisychain connection.

  • very good video man........

  • can you please post these websites your talking about. i go to half and there not there or its something else entirely

  • @danz409

    jammaboards dot c o m

    ultimarc dot c o m

    groovygamegear dot c o m

  • how would i wire an 8-way joystick that is not a 360? do the i-pacs have 1left-down 1right-down etc

  • did you put solder on the wire because i can't seem to get a connection with mine.

    THanks

  • @nick12882

try online at a place called "jamma boards" .......... all one word

  • What about the trackball, is it usb, or are you using an adapter...

  • the trackball I use is usb. No need to worry about the I-Pac for the "ball".

  • what are the extra slots on the i pac under coin, the a and b?

  • @fuckyou530

those are for tab and escape buttons. However you dont "need" those slots since in mame you can program any button you want to be your tab or escape

  • Does the Harnesses and Ground Harnesses come with the I-Pac board?

  • No wiring comes witht he I-Pac. At least not where I buy it from.

  • @moomert1 I am planning on getting an I-PAC 2 baord from Gremlin Solutions, I will buy a ground harness but I am worndering about the wiring harness. They sell a 10 Pack Crimped wires, Is that enough for 16 Buttons and 2 4/8 Way Joysticks or will I need to buy 3 or 4 sets of 10 Pack Crimped Wires. I am only noob so can you give me advice?

  • you will need to be multiple 10 packs if you are using american style joysticks and buttons. Each joystick uses 4 grounds. So for a 16 button plus 2 joystick set up you will need 24 crimped wires.

  • I am trying to make a similar control panel. Do you need a power supply to power the buttons or does the computer supply the power to run the buttons?

  • @wilcoder

the computer will supply the power

  • Quick question. What are those clips you have the wires attached do? Where can I get them, and what type of wire do you recommend?

  • @EvilChicobo

those clips are "quick connects" The enable easier quicker connections to cherry switches. As far as wire, just go to any web site that sells arcade stuff and buy a "jamma harness". Cut the wire you need from that. If you need more info send me a message

  • you sir have really simplified this process. i really appreciate you taking the time to inform us. this method makes the machine look and feel more genuine compared to tanksticks/ect. also its cheaper, so people can that extra money into a monitor. thanks again

  • @Vyson03

No problem. I remember what it was like to need information and not be able to find it. I am glad people find my vids usefull

  • Thank you so much for posting this! I've been looking for something like this and it was just the info I needed. I was curious, how do most people get their controller boxes to look so shiny? Do they put a layer of plexi glass on top? Also why do some people put a sheet of metal under the wood? Is it necessary?

  • @EvilChicobo

some people do put plexiglass. Most just use primer and a high gloss paint. I have never heard of using a piece of sheet metal for under the wood.

  • are sanwa buttons wired differently?

  • not really. you can wire up sanwa buttons the same way.

  • thanks! i was stumped because i was not sure what the ground was on a sanwa button

  • what kind of wire are you using for the controls?

  • moomert1 at 5:30 you show a wire with a thing at the end for easy connection, a sort of "shoe". Do you know what it's called? My arcade stick and buttons were soldered (they're really old). I'll be ordering new parts soon and this "shoe" solution seems like a better way of connecting cables.

  • not sure exactly what they are called. I just call them quick connects. You can order a new jamma harness from jammaboards and they already come installed. I'think you can get the quick connects at other places such as Radio Shack

  • what kind of wire is it? Is it the same for gounding and for the buttons? Thank you

  • yes its the same type of wire.

  • Really great video. I never knew you could screw down the bolts to hold the wires in... No wonder my wires kept falling off...

  • Awesome video

i wanna buy one, and on their site it says When a custom codeset is used, its not stored in the EEPROM. Once powered off these settings will be lost and it will revert to MAME settings.

does this mean if ive set the controls in other emulators ill have to set them everytime i turn it on???

  • which website? what control panel are you looking to buy?

  • can you daisy chain the ground wire to every button on a cp to one ground?

  • I have never tried to ground everything (all of player one side and all player 2 side to only one ground wire. I suppose it is possible but I myself have not tried it.

  • very well done ..thank you

  • Can someone tell me, which arcade games really need a 7 button layout?

  • The only time I use the 7th button is when playing MK3 or UMK3.

  • Sometimes you can use the 7th button to do a super attack (like in Street Fighter)

  • do you have a video on how to connect the rolling mouse(the ball) and also how to connect the coin slot to the to the coin mech.?

  • do both of the ps2 slots on the interface have to be connected to the computer for both players to work
