But actually it is possible to have more than an dozen of lives by the end of the 4-th level. (don't remember how many exactly i was able to get, but at the beginning of 2nd level i have 6 lives without a problem)

Though you should now that after going into a big bag and returning from it map totally resets (even secret lifes).

And it is possible to cheat in second level and get a lot of lifes (get 2 lifes and lose 1 usual stuff)

actually FTC is one of the easiest NES games ever. You can finish it with 80+ lives, but level 8 and the professor are real pains though.
