I`d like to kick that old bag in the arse. "Great ladies" are the ordinary women of this world, not the bloody `hoity toity` buggers who sojourn around the world as if they alone own the place. It makes me so mad when people act as if there are some who are superior to others.
Is it just me, or does anyone else prefer these old actors and actresses to the modern day ones? At least these people seem human and show an expression with each emotion.
Today's actors and actresses seem very lethargic and cynical. No pep to their step. Removed and unromantic. Zombie-ish. Boring to watch. Also, no eye-candy.
@sarahata22 They have. There is a BBC tv series with Jeremy Brett in it that you can find on youtube. I think there was another version posted with a different actor but I have not been able to find it in a while. If you want to see what other versions are available, try the IMDB.
@metalqueen2011 It was a version of , "Rebecca" that starred Jeremy Brett, in 1979. It might have been on PBS. I downloaded it last year, when it was here on YouTube.
"So this is what's been happening during my illness... tennis lessons my foot!" Florence Bates did a terrific job as Mrs. VanHopper. My favorite part of the whole movie is 4:20 when she looks @ the girl and goes from smile to frown. The girl even considers killing Mrs. VanH in the book... love it....
Behind a palm tree? There's not much 'behind' on a palm tree.... erm. I'm guessing Max has never made violent love to a woman behind a palm tree before. And I think it should stay that way.
@hiatusinc 'making love' back in that period didnt mean having sex. It meant to demonstrate one's passions violently. Think Rhett Butler grabbing Scarlett and kissing her. That kind of thing. For example, in Singin' in the Rain, when they are filming a scene and Lena Lamont has to talk into a microphone planted into a bush, she resists, saying "I can't make love to a bush!" Lena Lamont doesn't have a plant fetish; she means that she cant pretend to be violently in love with a plant.
@hiatusinc Decades ago, "to make love to" meant simply some romantic attention of the hugs-and-kisses variety. Around the 1950s, the phrase took on its current explicit meaning. So, not to worry ... Max is still an old-school gentleman.
Judith Anderson always plays a wonderful creepy woman! :) I love her! she was just so talented and fantastic! Daphne DeMaurier is probably MY most favorite writer!
After a gorgeous man like that asked me to marry him, I wouldn't be afraid of Mrs. van Hopper. In fact I would rub it in her face...who does she think she is. Honestly, the way Max caresses her with his eyes and his candid, blunt way of talking is in his own way very caring. I love this movie and Sir Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. Perfect chemistry!
I couldn't believe that bitch Mrs. Van Hopper asked her has she been doing things that she shouldn't!!! LOL!! She was so jealous because she thought Max might get horny enough and lay her LMAO!!!!
Boy Little Miss doesn't have any idea of what's waiting for her at Manderlay!! That witch/bitch Mrs. Danvers is going to give her fever to the highest degree!!! LOL!!!
He an older man and that's the way most of them act when dealing with a younger woman..more like a Father. In my opinion he's very sure of himself and the affect he has over her..but she also has an effect on him, she's just not aware of it..in time she'll learn..like I did to use her womanly powers :)
I LOVE MRS VAN HOPPER SHE PLAYS THE VULGAR AMERICAN TO A TEE , I LOVE THE SCENE WHERE SHE PUTS OUT HER CIGARETTE IN THE COLD CREAM , MMMM MRS DE WINTER GOOD BYE MY DEAR AND GOOD LUCK !!!! PRICELESS FROM AN AMERICAN ACROSS THE POND LOL
"I'm asking you to marry me, you little fool" That is the most unromantic proposal in the history of mankind. Hey if it gets you a beautiful castle in the coast of England then to hell with romance :) I love this line lol
After his line in the last part about not liking black satin and pearls I looked down the related videos column and at part 6/13 there's a still of her in a black dress and what looks like pearls!
@ProjectCivil No I agree. The age difference should be a lot bigger. In fact Olivier was only 33 when playing this film, Maxim was supposed to be 42. Fontaine was 23 when playing here, not old, but her character would be younger. Although her age is never mentioned in the book, she is described almost as a child bride. I imagined her to be 17 or 18, but no older.
@mayln163 Actually no... I recently read the book, and her age is never mentioned. At least not in number. If it is mentioned in any other way, it must be in an obscure way only the English would understand.

For a treat, watch the clip from 4:00 to 5:12 several times. Pretend you're the camera man. Watch how the camera moves from face to face and focuses on Mrs. Van Hopper then the new "Mrs. DeWinter." Cinematographic art never surpassed since.
i love how people used to speak in those days: fast, smoothly, flowingly, unlike today where every syllable is paused and words are stretched out, especially people from California: "Oh. My. God. Michael Jackson is dead. That is just So. Sad.
edit: "You'd better leave Mrs. Van Hopper, otherwise my foot may be found so far up your fat. . . ." That's what I love about these old movies. A lot of class.
Lmao "Is that my food??"

My favorite movie of all time. I have a TV and VCR in my bedroom--I go to sleep with it every night. Script memorized. Why is it a great movie? Hitchcock's wonderful direction (not the story--it's just another romance drama by DuMaurier.)
For a treat, watch the clip from 4:00 to 5:12 several times. Pretend you're the camera man. Watch how the camera moves from face to face and focuses on Mrs. Van Hopper then the new "Mrs. DeWinter." Cinematographic art never surpassed since.

@scooterbarf Not just another romance drama - the best of her romance dramas. My Cousin Rachel is all right, but Rebecca has a soul.

i love how people used to speak in those days: fast, smoothly, flowingly, unlike today where every syllable is paused and words are stretched out, especially people from California: "Oh. My. God. Michael Jackson is dead. That is just So. Sad.

edit: "You'd better leave Mrs. Van Hopper, otherwise my foot may be found so far up your fat. . . ." That's what I love about these old movies. A lot of class.
