Hooray for Ellen! I hope more celebrities can follow her great example.
Also...I just had an idea!! There are hundreds of schools in America that need help, but also hundreds of schools that are in good shape! What if the schools that are doing well each choose a low-income school to sponser? Get students involved! If every big school could watch out for a smaller school we could create change so much faster! Like if you agree! :)
@Lovebeinghappy Wouldn't hurt to try, but honestly, I think a lot of big schools are so hung up on being proud of their own students, community efforts just get lost in the translation. Put this idea of yours into motion somehow. Make them listen.
@Lovebeinghappy we did something like that where we all brought in about $2 each to give presents for christmas for the students who weren't going to receive any presents at home
These people are amazing! They inspire me so much! I am so inspired by Sherri Gahn at Whitney too...i am a teacher also and strongly feel that if someone cares so much for kids who probably don't have homes to go to at night, that is such an important part of a child's education beside the education they are getting itself. If I had a degree to work in a school environment, I would be this type of teacher also! I send my thanks! :-)
It is so stupid that athletes gets millions of dollars when the TEACHERS who goes above and beyond get a minimum of 30,000 or less per year.
They are the reason why we have CEO's, Presidents, Lawyers, Athletes and more who gets hundreds of thousands to millions and the teachers barely get anything SHAME ON THE GOVERNMENT!
If these teachers could throw a football or dunk baskets they'd be multi-millionaires. Just having charge of the future of the kids growing up in this country isn't as important, apparently. What's wrong with this picture??
order "1)public schools..." to " "Rich districts..." to oldest "The Education..." to " "Students from...". hope its not confusing just a few facts I gathered for a research paper.
1) Public schools are funded through federal, state and local taxes. However not all of these taxes contribute to public education equally. Although public education does receive funds from the federal level, its two major contributors are the state and property taxes. State funds are usually distributed by formula which can be based on the # of pupils, # of students living in poverty, with disabilities or learning english as a second language.
“Students from poorer counties are…less likely to perform at grade level in reading and math,” and that “In each of the Carolinas, the 15 poorest school systems post test scores that repeatedly pull both states down on national education measures, such as the SAT” (qtd. in Cenziper and Mellnik 1).
The Education Intelligence Agency informs that while the average per pupil spending in the state of Arizona of public elementary&secondary school systems for the years 2006-2007 was $7,196,some districts were spending over $15,000, with highest at $40,217.In 1998 The CharlotteObserver set out to document the educational disparities among rich&poor school districts in North and South Carolina and after 8 months of investigation along with the help of local, state&national reports it was found that
Rich districts, with plenty of valuable and taxable property, can actually impose lower tax rates than impecunious cities and still raise more money for their schools. In the city of New York the average expenditure per pupil in 1987 was around $5,000. In the highest spending suburbs however “funding levels rose above $11,000, with the highest districts in the state at $15,000” (Kozol 83).
Local funds however which make up approximately 44% of funding are made up by commercial and residential property taxes that contribute directly to their own local school districts. This huge reliance on property taxes often means that children who live in low-income neighborhoods, with property-poor localities, attend schools who unfortunately receive fewer resources than those who live in wealthy counties.
@ItsAliax It's better to help the young so that when they grow up, they know how to handle things on their own, so that no one ends up in need in high school. But I agree with what you're saying is something that should be considered.
@annnabannnannna I meant other talk shows too. I am helping my school, I'm vice president and use a lot of my time raising money... I also live in Kuwait where education is free for everyone and I go to a private school so THERE :)
@andywinsagain she was helping that other school for a good amount of time which is awesome and now she's going to help another one too, so yay for her! :D
Sherrie Gahn's work has really shown us just how many more great teachers there are like her. I'm sure Ellen will be giving out many more donations to schools like these :)
