With two refs on the ice, very few calls are ever missed especially when someone gets hurt. When you hit a guy right after he does a drop pass how can that be a cheap shot? It wasn't the way Kostitsyn hit the ice it was the fact that Sauer drove his forearms right at his head, and crushed it at the boards. As for why the refs missed it, they probably followed the drop-pass, and not the player.

Try watching the video again. Watch his forehead hit the ice first before his body. Sauer is strong but not strong enough to hurt him that bad by "driving his forearms". He hit him then extended his arms. If the hit wasn't in the refs field of vision cause they were looking at a drop pass 5 feet away then they need a new career path.
