Sawed off probably refers to the fact that the barrels were made extremely short for easy concealment and maneuverability. The "semi-automatic" part isn't illegal, but he probably meant fully automatic. The term "machine gun" is just used as a blanket term for anything fully automatic (yes, it's incorrect but I doubt some guy on the news would know that).

Obviously, at some point in Iraq, one needed a force that would shoot first and ask questions later, in order to maintain security. While that is not the current situation, Blackwater was very instrumental in the successful stabiliation of Iraq which has saved far more lives by averting civil war than they killed wrongfully. The world is a fucked up place and sometimes you need some badass dudes to get things on track. Peace has never been maintained without force in history.

How is that possible? They carefully monitored a massive weapons build up and plans that were being crafted for huge credit lines as well as various alliances between nations. They were 100% correct. There is no business that comes close to the profits that are made, from creating and fighting a war.
