Actually - mate - the entire world calls Wales a principality. If it still had its own monarchy it would be a Kingdom or if it was freed it would become a Republic. So its not that the English - and the rest of the world - 'call' it a principality out of insult, they call it a Principality because that's exactly what it is.
By the way I'm Wenglish and proud. Born in England raised in Wales.
Because of work I've been lucky enough to travel the world and I don't think I've ever once heard Wales referred to by anyone as anything less than a country (although once a US state!)
Insult or not- I think most in my part of Wales will continue to call this country of ours as exactly that.... a country.
Lets leave that nutty little English/German man who calls himself 'our prince' to debate with his plants in his palaces in England...The last real 'prince of Wales' died centuries ago.
Yes, I call Wales a country too, I think I was just being a little pedantic earlier, sorry about that. But I totally agree with you, Charles couldn't be less a Prince of Wales if he tried. He has nothing what so ever to do with this country, but I cant talk either.
Just out of curiosity, as you seem like somebody with a lot of national pride. What are your views on people like myself coming to live in Wales?
Yeah - most people in Wales are warm and welcoming to the stranger... I'll share a pint with anyone who want to make my country their country - as long as they're respectful of our culture, traditions and can say 'Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch' ;)
Seriously... I used to play rugby with a bloke whose family was from India - the guy played with a turbain, sang the anthem with pride and it was widely accepted by all as the total legend he was/ is.
That's good to hear, so it's not all like Aberystwyth then.
Round this way there is a lot of hostility to English people, even though I have lived here almost from birth and can speak fluent Welsh. Its kind of backward when you think that there is a large percentage of Welsh people round here that can't speak Welsh themselves yet still treat people like me like some sort of illegal immigrant.
I'm surprised by that... and as a Welshman a little ashamed!
I know the world over communities who feel flooded by a wave of immigration often lash out... and that's certainly true for parts of Wales - but that tends to be due to them not speaking the language and expecting the locals adapt the the 'english' way of life rather than them trying to appreciate they've crossed a border into another another country.
If you speak fluent welsh... just tell them to Cachu bant ti cachu mes!
@wrexhamjack123 I don't speak it myself mate.... but, just as immigrants moving to England have a responsibility to learn English - someone moving to a predominantly Welsh speaking part of Wales does have a responsibility to learn Welsh. - And, even if someone moves to a non-Welsh speaking part of Wales, I think they still should try to adapt to the local culture and away of life.... not expect it to adapt to them.
@maxfm83 I agree, however, there is only one village in Wales where every resident speaks Welsh, and that won't last long I can tell you now. I speak Welsh but your argument about local culture and way of life is very thin. I take pride in speaking Welsh, but if you moved to any part of Wales, e.g. Swansea, which is the city with the highest percentage of Welsh speakers in Wales (19%!) that means more ppl watch the Swans than spk Welsh. So what is the local culture, footy or Eisteddfods?
@wrexhamjack123 Yes, but no. I think we'll all loose something if we sit back and just accept that anglification of our country is a pregone conclusion - It's our national identity and doesn’t just makes us who we are, but also makes us interesting to the rest of the world.
Just as Quebec brings in laws to try to protect their identity and culture, we in Wales should look for our legislature does the same... as a native English speaker from Neath, I'd be happy for real bilingualism for Wales.
Wow some really foul language used on here, fellow welsh peeps! I like this video, great tribute to Wales. I like to think Wales is a land of much visual beauty ie the beacons, snowdonia, the coast. But also the working class honest lively-hood, with a 'if you dont like me, screw you' attitude, now lets get pissed and watch the rugby!

Whether you vote Labour, Cons, Lib or Plaid, it won't matter until we a independent. Once we get independence, THEN we can start thinking about which policies we agree with.

Welsh independence is fueled by poor government from London, Wales is always underfunded in every aspect, But so is my home town of stoke-on-trent like most of the small northern cities. I think we all agree that Westminster bleeds us dry including Scotland, But Independence from a Union that has brought us at least some prosperity over the years is crazy, Why not try to balance out the current system instead of creating a new.
An lets be honest independence for Wales is not fully independence, What Plaid Cymru don't tell you, Is that they are Pro-European Union and in the European Union you will have less influence than you do in Westminster, So why fool yourselves about the promise of independence given to you by Plaid Cymru. No doubt about it, Scotland's been shafted for it's natural resources. Thatcher used N. sea oil revenue to fund the unemployment bill in the 80's, what a sheer bloody waste. Here's hoping Alban reclaims it's right to do as it pleases with what rightfully belongs to it.
to merlin999999... Wales is not the richest natural resourced country in the UK nor Europe. Scotland would be the 8th wealthiest nation on earth if we didn`t have to subsidize england (and wales) with our oil. By the way...Loch Ness alone holds more water than all the lakes and reservoirs in england and wales put together and it isn`t even our largest loch. Our slate industry was killed off in the 1950`s and our coal industry all but killed of by Thatcher in 80`s.

Whats all this best place on earth load a auld shite. Wales is quite a nice place but it's about 3rd in the beauty stakes in Britain. Come to Scotland if you want to see beauty and culture. At least we don't have to tell everyone we're Scottish 24 hours a day cause we have an inferiority complex and we don't speak in our old dead language just to try and have a bit of pride.

Wow! This is amazing! It really brought out the Welsh pride in me while watching that! Wales is so beautiful and I'm so proud to be Welsh! CYMRU AM BYTH!!
wales is the richest natural resourced country in UK and 1 of the most in europe. EVERY bit of the monarchy's gold and silver comes from wales, so does all the money. all the slate, coal, most of the lime, tin, copper, steel, 20% of UK gas, 25% of UK water in the endless reservoirs etc etc all such nations get exploited but its still God's country
if cymru is such a shity place to live why is it so many english people want come to live here.and when thing's realy get bad who will move out first.
Very nice video. I have an English wife and many of my friends are English but even they agree Wales has been exploited.Where do you think Englands wealth came from? It came from exploiting and colonising other countries all over the world. If England would be better off without Wales, why is the English parliament so keen to keep the union? Water supply, minerals and a need for expanded living space for the ever expanding popul;ation in England might just have something to do with it?
Excuse me but i fink ul;l find u are wrong. The welsh assembly is new and tryin to change the situation while under westminister they will never ever put wales first as for a welsh parliament would. Use ure brain and not ure mouth to express true logic. I mean why would they when they have england to deal with. WE NEED FULL INDEPENDANCE, ANNIBYNIAETH LLWYR I'M GENEDL. CYMRU AM BYTH A BYTHOETH A FU'R IAITH GYMRAEG YN FYW
I don't think we need Independance myself but I certainly don't agree with the comment above you. But it's good that you show support for your nation.

stay away from this little fuck of a country.. serpent flag, used to be aland of character, song and faith. Now its a shallow mess which the welsh asembly have single handedly created the conditions for it to be the poorest region of uk.. now like this under old welsh office
Sorry that was unfair! the Welsh have huge national pride, perhaps more than the Scots and that takes some doing. There is a lot to like about wales but please don't forget about England, Cumbria or Cymbrynth, cornwall, we are not all English you know
ummm...... this isnt the welsh national anthem its "bread of heaven" in welsh. and england is simply a part of the uk... so i belive u mean uk not england there!
quite but it cetainly a welsh anthem. Land of our fathers may be the preferred choice but i am sure that you would agree that bread of heaven is a welsh anthem... and i meant england.
i removed your other comment sorry. Please comment it again. By the way I go to Ystalyfera. I have two uncles who live in Brynaman Jonny and Edgar. I don't know if u know them.
listen gavinmjm, you will not understand what heritage and passion means to the welsh if you cant speak the language. people like you have no right to say that welsh language is no good, its the oldest language in europ its from the days of the celts. now im no historian by any means but most welsh knows this and thats why our passion to speak it is so strong. people like you should be telling others to learn this awsome language. 'CYMRU AM BYTH A TWLL TIN POB SAIS'!!
I'm Welsh, and it a great country with great heritage. I don't think that Welsh is a great language though, and teaching it to School children as a compulsory subject really isn't fair. Less than 600,000 people in the world speak it, so its not of much use to anybody.
You Welsh people have every right to be proud of your great country. Very nice video, makes me long for our holidays we spent there during the lovely summer of 2003.
In North Wales there are loads of slate mines and my family have worked in them bt they dont make up my national identity. I agree when you say rugby is a major part of being Welsh, i kno few people who play bt everyone I kno watchs the Wales games.
yes, granted not everyone in wales likes rugby, but you must appreciate that it is a huge part of our national identity!! i mean there were little in fact no mines to my knowledge in north wales, but still its a huge part of our heritage!! the same way that rugby is!! rugby is ingrained into the welsh culture... maybe you have to live in the south to appreciate it?
The 1st was Cwm Rhondda. Cwm Rhondda, the Welsh name for the Rhondda Valley, is a popular hymn tune written by John Hughes (1873-1932). It is usually used in English as a setting for William Williams' text Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah (or, in some traditions, Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer), originally Arglwydd, arwain trwy'r anialwch in Welsh,
translated by Peter Williams in the 1771 hymnal Hymns on Various Subjects. In Welsh it is usually a setting for a hymn by Ann Griffiths, Wele'n sefyll rhwng y myrtwydd.
Apart from church use, it can often be heard sung by the crowd at rugby matches, especially those of the Wales national rugby union team. There it is common for all voices to sing the repeat of the last line (which in church use is repeated only in the bass and alto parts). The hymn has also been sung on British state occasions such as the Funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales.
Good video, but what's with all this Rugby? Every video I see about Wales on Youtube has a lot of Rugby. Rugby means a lot to SOME people in Wales, but by no means all of us. Up north we couldn't give two hoots most of the time.
Come on there were only a few clips of Rugby and Rugby is the most popular sport in Wales. Wales is well known for it's rugby so I though that the Video had to have some in it.
Still fighting for independence for Wales! We hate the English just like America does just a lot more ^_^ We will join you in Independence someday!

I feel privileged to have grown up in Wales. Though it would have been easier had I not met so many arrogant Welshmen, such as yourself.
I also speak fluent Welsh, which is more than can be said for most of your fellow countrymen and I support both when it comes to sport.
Yet in spite of that I've still had a pint glass smashed in the face for nothing more than being English.

wales is the richest natural resourced country in UK and 1 of the most in europe. EVERY bit of the monarchy's gold and silver comes from wales, so does all the money. all the slate, coal, most of the lime, tin, copper, steel, 20% of UK gas, 25% of UK water in the endless reservoirs etc etc all such nations get exploited but its still God's country

CYMRU AM BYTH A BYTHOETH A FU'R IAITH GYMRAEG YN FYW
adamjones416 4 years ago
I don't think we need Independance myself but I certainly don't agree with the comment above you. But it's good that you show support for your nation.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
stay away from this little fuck of a country.. serpent flag, used to be aland of character, song and faith. Now its a shallow mess which the welsh asembly have single handedly created the conditions for it to be the poorest region of uk.. now like this under old welsh office

Shouldnt It Be Dysgwch'r Gymraeg?
BFMVxFreak 4 years ago
spose you're right
'r only follows a vowel though - otherwise it's y or yr. secondly you can also say dysga too. the latter being more formal
stecymru14 4 years ago
Sorry that was unfair! the Welsh have huge national pride, perhaps more than the Scots and that takes some doing. There is a lot to like about wales but please don't forget about England, Cumbria or Cymbrynth, cornwall, we are not all English you know
admiralal 4 years ago
Don't worry lol. But this video is about my country noy england or other parts of the UK. I may make one some day but this isn't it.
ieuz123 4 years ago
yes...well... fab anthem.... but wales is nothing without England... daffodils and leeks!!!
admiralal 4 years ago
ummm...... this isnt the welsh national anthem its "bread of heaven" in welsh. and england is simply a part of the uk... so i belive u mean uk not england there!
zakirocks2007 4 years ago
quite but it cetainly a welsh anthem. Land of our fathers may be the preferred choice but i am sure that you would agree that bread of heaven is a welsh anthem... and i meant england.
admiralal 4 years ago
well i agree it most certainly is a welsh anthem but i disagree on the england thing
zakirocks2007 4 years ago
Welsh national anthem isn't bread od heaven. The national anthem tells about our poets warriors and great hero's.
=]
The land of my fathers, the land of my choice,
The land in which poets and minstrels rejoice;
The land whose stern warriors were true to the core,
While bleeding for freedom of yore.
Chorus
Wales! Wales! fav'rite land of Wales!
While sea her wall, may naught befall
To mar the old language of Wales.

listen gavinmjm, you will not understand what heritage and passion means to the welsh if you cant speak the language. people like you have no right to say that welsh language is no good, its the oldest language in europ its from the days of the celts. now im no historian by any means but most welsh knows this and thats why our passion to speak it is so strong. people like you should be telling others to learn this awsome language.

But apart from that. Big up the Wales Massive ;]

Yea I know about the slate mines and have seen a quite a few, they look really majestic. I just couldn't find any space for them. Sorry :(

brilliant wales
rulebritannia1 5 years ago
yes, granted not everyone in wales likes rugby, but you must appreciate that it is a huge part of our national identity!! i mean there were little in fact no mines to my knowledge in north wales, but still its a huge part of our heritage!! the same way that rugby is!! rugby is ingrained into the welsh culture... maybe you have to live in the south to appreciate it?
loratadine 5 years ago
Rugby is an english sport, in the town of 'RUGBY'. Duh! Not welsh!
ROCKSOLID19 5 years ago
Yes but you may well find that Wales is a tad more famous for it's rugby than england which is more famous for it's football and cricket.
ieuz123 5 years ago
what was that brilliant music
rulebritannia1 5 years ago
The 1st was Cwm Rhondda. Cwm Rhondda, the Welsh name for the Rhondda Valley, is a popular hymn tune written by John Hughes (1873-1932). It is usually used in English as a setting for William Williams' text Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah (or, in some traditions, Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer), originally Arglwydd, arwain trwy'r anialwch in Welsh,
ieuz123 5 years ago
translated by Peter Williams in the 1771 hymnal Hymns on Various Subjects. In Welsh it is usually a setting for a hymn by Ann Griffiths, Wele'n sefyll rhwng y myrtwydd.
ieuz123 5 years ago
Apart from church use, it can often be heard sung by the crowd at rugby matches, especially those of the Wales national rugby union team. There it is common for all voices to sing the repeat of the last line (which in church use is repeated only in the bass and alto parts). The hymn has also been sung on British state occasions such as the Funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Good video, but what's with all this Rugby? Every video I see about Wales on Youtube has a lot of Rugby. Rugby means a lot to SOME people in Wales, but by no means all of us. Up north we couldn't give two hoots most of the time.
garethwynw 5 years ago
Come on there were only a few clips of Rugby and Rugby is the most popular sport in Wales. Wales is well known for it's rugby so I though that the Video had to have some in it.
