Ok, Ive found a way to beat these thing. All you have to do is watch the speed at which objects roll "up" the hill. Assuming constant friction you can tell if the distance is shorter then it seems.

Of course you can also watch your object roll up the hill and gather that stuff is going to shit from that.

Reminds me of Magnetic Hill in New Brunswick, just outside of Moncton.  Same principle: the surrounding topography and treelines make you think you're at the top of the hill when you're really at the bottom.
