After the last fight I started to watch Werdum's BJJ fights and I realized he is great in BJJ, No Gi and applying his art to MMA, first time I see this Omoplata set up. Thank you. Anda caballo!
using omoplata as a transition does not make sense when you look at how powerful of a finishing move it can be when finished correctly, especially when the opponent stands to counter, that finish is straight checkmate dawg
that kinda wrist at elbow control pretty hard to pull off with gloves on
its very rare to see ppl finish sumone with omoplata, when the person being finished is on thier knees, unless your breaking them down at the legs and essentially flattening out thier body so thier body is flat against the ground it can be very hard to finish, still very doable tho, but 99% of people are not stretching out the opponents legs when finishing, letting the opponent roll out
i prefer (once in omoplata position beside opponent) using your free leg to hook the opponents far leg (if they stand) and then using ur outside hand to grab your own foot that is doing the omoplata, so as to triangle the leg ....if you break them down at the legs and control thier wrist while doin it, the common reaction seems to be to stand up out of it....
the reason i probably prefer the counter to when they stand to defend is because I have trouble finishing omoplata even when they are flattened, because keeping the wrist bent by my abs while getting rite up beside them can be hard
hehe you pretty much answered your own point "its very rare to see ppl finish sumone with omoplata"
i guess its easier for most people to do an armbar,a triangle, some other choke or an americana so those are the most often seen techniques in a fight...
have you tried hooking your far leg under their far armpit (just like how drysdale hooks the leg to counter standing). I use it and it works for me. I hook the far arm pit it walk away from them on my hands abit to crank on the shoulder. If that doesn't finish them i use my hands and straighten the arm into a armbar against my triangles legs. ;)
yes i am familiar with the armbar with the triangled leg's i have seen it in marcelo's series never thought to use the armpit tho, as i usually hook the bottom part of the figure foured leg around the bottom of the opponents neck, arm makes perfect sense will hafta to try that out, obrigado!
thanks for posting rick great stuff by great legends as usual,i like the foot on the face part of the technique
but i gotta say, i LOVE omoplata's, and Robert Drysdale's interpretation and correct finishing of the omoplata with the standing counter finish, or by getting his knees off the ground by grabbing around the opponents thigh (establishing a solid wrist control) is the go-to way for me of doign the omopalta
nice moves.. although the omoplata set up by triangling the legs is too lose.. a guy who is strong can get out of that.. not enough downward pressure.. needs to clamp the knees together and drive the shoulder down.. check out when eddie bravo goes to omoplata.. much tighter.
I like the way he was transitioning into an armbar and let one loose at 2:25. lol

Verdums MMA guard variation is the shit and it opens up your rubberguard like a motherfucker too especially against bigger guys. I dig it.

maybe i misunderstood what you wrote but if i didnt then i just have one thing to say....
that omoplata sweep doesnt have to be a transition, you just use the omoplata sweep to get in the position to finish the omoplata...
