Marks cynicism makes him cliche sometimes. It's the easiest thing in the world to wreck a comedy by being serious. If you're looking at a scene in a comedy movie through the optic of a court of law your criticism is unqualified. The ultimate testament to that is that Mark doesn't understand that King of Comedy wasn't really a comedy. It was a drama about comedy. It was looking at a similar character dramatically. Observe and Report looks at him comedically.

i didn't like "observe and report" and i love mark kermode, but this is a really weak/irritating review.

"paul blart" came out three months before "observe and report", so implying that it's a rip-off is really stupid, kermode should know this. since i think he does, i wonder why he feels the need, to put such an emphasis on the similarities that are cleary just coincidental.

there are so many flaws in O&R movie, but instead of pointing them out, we get a lecture on scorsese and queen.

I would like to provide a defense of O&R, which isn't really a comedy at all, Kermode is right that it isn't funny, its painful to watch, and that's kind of the point. Rogan's character is severely psychologically damaged, the "flasher" is the only thing resolved at the end of the film, but it makes no bones about it just being a plot device. His mentall Illness still looms large. Instead of equating it to a throwaway comedy like paul blart, kermode should see what the film is trying to do.

Im quite positive Rogens character doesn't 'triumph' at the end of this movie.

The movie is about the delusions of Grandeur associated with Bi-Polar disorder.

Its a fantastic modern film, about an incredibly medicated country. I think the good Dr has had his judgement clouded by watching it from the beginning in relation to the Paul Blart movie.

Well, personaly, I enjoyed the film, while NOT seeing Mall Cop, and it was BECAUSE the low level the humor was placed in THAT I enjoyed it. Sometimes I just want to sit back, get a cheap laugh at something that I may not normaly be amused by, and go home chuckling to myself. I don't always WANT clever humor, childish humor, or classic humor. Sometimes the vulgar, disgusting, or just down-right "What the %&#$" stupidity of a movie is all I really want to see. And maybe that's just me.
