Marks cynicism makes him cliche sometimes. It's the easiest thing in the world to wreck a comedy by being serious. If you're looking at a scene in a comedy movie through the optic of a court of law your criticism is unqualified. The ultimate testament to that is that Mark doesn't understand that King of Comedy wasn't really a comedy. It was a drama about comedy. It was looking at a similar character dramatically. Observe and Report looks at him comedically.
i didn't like "observe and report" and i love mark kermode, but this is a really weak/irritating review.
"paul blart" came out three months before "observe and report", so implying that it's a rip-off is really stupid, kermode should know this. since i think he does, i wonder why he feels the need, to put such an emphasis on the similarities that are cleary just coincidental.
there are so many flaws in O&R movie, but instead of pointing them out, we get a lecture on scorsese and queen.
Wow, way to miss the point. What a pretentious cunt. Obviously went into the film wanting to hate it. What would you prefer, another Will Ferrell pile of wank? What a twat.
I would like to provide a defense of O&R, which isn't really a comedy at all, Kermode is right that it isn't funny, its painful to watch, and that's kind of the point. Rogan's character is severely psychologically damaged, the "flasher" is the only thing resolved at the end of the film, but it makes no bones about it just being a plot device. His mentall Illness still looms large. Instead of equating it to a throwaway comedy like paul blart, kermode should see what the film is trying to do.
This is pretty shite but kinda alrite if your lean. Pineapple Express is brilliant. I love Kermode but he's wrong about these type of films. Obviously he's not going to enjoy them they're for 16 year old bunners to find all the little bits of dialogue funny.
Im quite positive Rogens character doesn't 'triumph' at the end of this movie.
The movie is about the delusions of Grandeur associated with Bi-Polar disorder.
Its a fantastic modern film, about an incredibly medicated country. I think the good Dr has had his judgement clouded by watching it from the beginning in relation to the Paul Blart movie.
Kermode has evidently missed a few meetings. I can review any film and state how it's poor due to it being familiar with something released earlier. Weak point.
I can barely work out what point you're trying to make because you're obviously new to the concept of sentences, but are you saying that it's not the job of a movie critic to point out that a movie advertised as being edgy and thought-provoking is actually so derivative that it's a virtual replica of dull assembly-line trash being made at the same time, you immense cretin? Try being clever before you try being clever.
Calm down. Thank you for the lecture on sentence structure. Evidently you had to check your spelling and grammar before daring to criticise another posting but you missed something out. Try inserting a full stop now and again, your sentence is too long.
I won't lower myself to name calling. Your comment and inability to understand a simple criticism speaks volumes.

Well, personaly, I enjoyed the film, while NOT seeing Mall Cop, and it was BECAUSE the low level the humor was placed in THAT I enjoyed it. Sometimes I just want to sit back, get a cheap laugh at something that I may not normaly be amused by, and go home chuckling to myself. I don't always WANT clever humor, childish humor, or classic humor. Sometimes the vulgar, disgusting, or just down-right "What the %&#$" stupidity of a movie is all I really want to see. And maybe that's just me.
Kermode is Totally right, Rogen and his ilk (Apattow etc) are a stain on the face of cinema today... I don't know what type of braindead people his movies appeal to...
@kwisnothere u can just picture the likes of ian hislop and rory bremner doing some comedy to a silent audience then whip out their car keys and jingle them and the crowd goes wild, all america needs is black guys being racist "because that doesnt count"
I'm sure mark knows that paul blart and O+R were being filmed at the same time, the fact they've come out at similar times is purely coincidental, so think it's a rather pointless criticism to claim it's "oh its just a remake of paul blart, how cheap".

Jody Hill: The inspiration when I was making the movie, I was watching Taxi Driver a lot and also King of Comedy."
Maybe you should actually do some research before you review films. Also 'Paul Blart remake'? You pretty much lost me there, I don't see how they are similar apart from their jobs. This was a brilliant, near perfect film and I hope you'll give it another chance someday.
You're ignoring the director's own words; "The only comedy inspired by Taxi Driver" If the director himself has forgotten his own research material, then it doesn't exactyly bode well for his overall capability now, does it??
Arguing with Mark Kermode-it's not for greenhorns, son.
LOL you realize those were the press notes right. Jeezus. You can read multiple interviews with Hill and Rogen who both clearly state King of Comedy was a huge influence on the movie. And i'm sorry that i think your BFF Mark Kermode is wrong on this but he is. I mean I doubt you've even seen this movie so why the fuck are you responding?
This is closer to Taxi Driver For Laughs than King Of Comedy though. Also, Kermode is a fucking idiot. The girl at the end is revealed to be glamorous once dressed up? That was the joke. She looks like tragic white trash. The guy just doesn't like Rogen vehicles and seems to have either misunderstood the sense of humour or just ignored what was on screen to suit himself. Which is okay, it's not like anyone knows who the fuck he is.
I dont think Kermode is an idiot, and as movie critics go, he's pretty well known. That is a gd point though, as he does seem to be biased against Rogan and the revenge of the laddism thing. Then again I dont really blame him
If Kermode would sort his barnet - then I would be able take him seriously.
