I read this book in middle school.... I did not understand to much... but now that I am in 12th grade, I am reading it again. But I see alot of beauty in a authoritarian government... I brainwashed myself when I was young :D.

The book 1984 talks about Newspeak, politically correct English that all are required to use, phased in over time. It is remarkably similar to today's "gender-neutral" language movement, pushed by the same totalitarian mindset, and supported by naive and gullible universities, media, and even "evangelical" churches and seminaries.
Read Huxley's "Brave New World"... It describes a society that is basically just like ours... sex(but not for reproductive purposes) and drugs are encouraged if I remember correctly, in order to control the masses. It was a drug called soma.
This shit is scarey. They had insight or "INSIDE" information. The Roman poet Juvenal had it pegged too...remember "Bread and circuses"?

Did Orwell intend a comparison between oligarchical, totalitarian systems & how religions have operated, at times, in history; censoring higher criticism of the Bible & sceptical comment from the media. Certainly the internet allows for freedom of thought. Sometimes religious people self censor & read only apologetics. For a balanced view read both sides of argument. @bluesman979 Eh comparing modern England or even the modern west is a great overeaction. Well Compared to Emmanual Goldstein we know that Bin laden did exist. And that he was leader of Al-Qaida. Guantanamo Bay is not universial in the west and people are not sent to place for political descent. Do you CCTV camera in your house to make sure that you do not think like your goverment ? Do you live in a one party state ? Are we divided into castes like inner party member and outer party member ?

@Eopyk the overt caricatures in the novel are literary tools to drive home the point. fact is we do live in a society where we r on camera the majority of the day in public & at work. we willingly use mobile phones & computers whereby the back end infrastructure is able to record our every movement & comment - including this one. i work in online advertising - it's my job to target ads to customers (via 'cookies') all over the net!

@Eopyk bin-laden may have been a real person but, like Goldstein, a story was created about him & his likeness used by the rulers as a sole figure to direct the populaces anger & rally them behind the war effort. the majority of the ppl in oceania could not see thru the lies & neither can the majority of ppl now. wouldn't make for effective social engineering if they could! in real life dictatorships r subtle & come to be by consent of the ppl by using good sounding things like 'democracy'!

Well I have spoken to both Afghanis and Saudi Arabians they can clarrify that his existence is real. Futher more there are sources of him that pre-dates this war on terror hysteria. As for "work camps" how else could one realistically describe the gulag system spread across America?
Prisoners, slave labourers in pink ;-) make license plates for cars, body armour for troops etc That looks like a work-camp to me

Did Orwell intend a comparison between oligarchical, totalitarian systems & how religions have operated, at times, in history; censoring higher criticism of the Bible & sceptical comment from the media. Certainly the internet allows for freedom of thought. Sometimes religious people self censor & read only apologetics. For a balanced view read both sides of argument. Imagine if in the govt. schools children were taught that Wal-Mart CEO's never lie. Fables were inculcated. Pictures of them were on the walls and statues erected. We were taught that they were our saviours. Kind of a creepy thought wouldn't you say?
