when i learnt to do this at Uni, we did not use a safety string instead we used a stick to stop the sprang from springing apart and we could also use it as a beating baton to tighten the sprang up. to finish we got a crochet hook and did a simple chain stitch and tied the last two strings together with a finer piece of cotton. And to take it off the frame we tied a piece of string to the top of the first loop and passed it through each loop and tied it off at the last loop top and bottom.
