I joined the US Paratroopers at 30 and was in 4.5 years...fought 18 months in Afghanistan or Iraq...My only regret is that our civilians are too spiritually weak to live as fighting men do...some fighting men have good experiences, some have bad...I DO remember bad things....but we fought and fought well....We broke Al Queda in Iraq, and it was good that we did...we saw the torture chambers and the mass graves that Al Queda left in their wake...and the enemy IS ON YOUR SHORES, NOW, ENGLISHMAN!

I'm 16 and there was a point last year I wanted to join the army. I have realised though what kind of shit the army is run. I have friends who are very keen to join the army but I don't see why since I agree with you Gratex that the only time you really need to join the army is when we're being attacked.

They were drafted in, mostly, there's a difference. WW2 could have been avoided prior to Hitler gaining power. Those that did go there did some fine looting, though.

Individual Soldiers might be stupid in the Army as they were in civilian life, that does not however mean all Soldiers are stupid which they are not.

I joined the US Paratroopers at 30 and was in 4.5 years...fought 18 months in Afghanistan or Iraq...My only regret is that our civilians are too spiritually weak to live as fighting men do...some fighting men have good experiences, some have bad...I DO remember bad things....but we fought and fought well....We broke Al Queda in Iraq, and it was good that we did...we saw the torture chambers and the mass graves that Al Queda left in their wake...and the enemy IS ON YOUR SHORES, NOW, ENGLISHMAN!

There is more in the armed forces than what goes on in Iraq, Afghanistan and any other field of combat. You say "there is more to life than that", but there is quite a lot of good opportunities in the army. Lots that doesn't involve combat.

listen mate i've done two tours of afghanistan and i've heard from the horses mouth what the taleban are like. Yes during the soviet invasion the Americans did fund the mujahadeen, but did they say..... with the weapons you have, kill every women and child that wants to get a education, with them weapons burn down the schools and hospitals, send these people into the dark ages.....hmmmm i don't think so. I suggest you do a little bit of research on what you THINK you know you're talking about.

yeah i understand you but that is mainly down to politicians not the Army.
Public pressure and voting the right people in " if you can" makes the difference.
At the end of the day we still need a fully manned and trained Army whether at war or not.
The British Army does not really have a problem with recruiting it is retention that can sometimes cause problems.
That's why the MOD has put so much money into things like new accommodation, pay and benefits, education etc.

I'm 16 and there was a point last year I wanted to join the army. I have realised though what kind of shit the army is run. I have friends who are very keen to join the army but I don't see why since I agree with you Gratex that the only time you really need to join the army is when we're being attacked.

I respect you for the fact that you at least thought about the Army as a career option so something about it must have seemed appealing to you.
However you claim that the Army is run badly, the British Army is one of the most advanced and best equipped Army's in the world.
Your other point about not joining the Army untill your attacked does not make sense, it is like saying i will fill my car up with petrol once it has run out. You need a well trained Army prepared and ready to fight.

I'm not saying that the way the army is being run is bad at all equipment and training wise. In fact I think it's being run great that way. What I'm saying is basically what Gratex is saying: you should only join the army if you need to defend ourselves not to attack which seems to be happening now. We should defend our country not attack for it if you know what I mean.

Lets look at the French the Revolution, the people took power but where are they now, a quick check over in Russia Before, During and after communism, well as far as i can see in both those cases the people took charge and for a bit but both ended up right back at square one. Maybe Cuba?

Revolutions are a roulette, they either Sink or Swim, it's all about how much they want it.
Cuba wasn't perfect but it's people get free Education and Housing, food stamps.. They even have their own separate Currency for Capitalist Countries.

That is quite an interesting topic.
I don't like too much Socialism in a system, I mean people wont work without an incentive; Foods a different matter in terms of you don't farm, you don't eat as being the incentive.
But a Factory making Computer Chips for example, why should people work if they get food stamps?
Unless there is a system where work gives you reward?
Dealing with the abuses of Banks and Companies is one thing that I can agree with Socialism. Free Market is too open to abuse

We should go back to the good old days of Wolf and Man where we earned our food and got fit doing it, and the sole reason for our existence was to survive. All we do now is exist.

I can understand where this guy is coming from. I wouldn't have the bottle to join the army. I'm not good at taking orders, and having watched Ross Kemp with our soldiers in Afghanistan, I doubt if I'd survive a day there. I hate war but I am so grateful for our soldiers. More grateful for them than any of the self serving politicians who send them into these intolerable situations. They are all heroes
