  • "What's a 20?"...lol! I guess he's only used to 50s & 100s.

  • I wonder if the gorilla was renting the office.

  • Which episode is this from?

  • Directly to favorites no thought required.

  • that gorilla use to scare the shit out of me when I was little,I was afraid the gorilla was going to kill that guy

  • WOW I cannot believe this in my head after all these years this has been buried somewhere for so long. No wonder I lapse into that voice doing that New York speak -as in DAT BUS or BOYOBOYOBOY! weird huh!

  • @loitermanart I didn't understand the "oh boy oh boy oh boy" line when I saw this at 3 years old. I thought he was saying something like "oh way oh way" and I didn't get it. It's amazing how much easier it is to understand everything now.

  • ... I had totally forgotten about this until I saw it just now, and then I remembered every second of it.

  • Wonder if he meant...get me a "20" as in...bucks?

  • I only saw this once in 1981 and never forgot it, Watching it now, I seem to actually remember everything about it, even the music!

  • OMG its Donkey Kong

  • Anyone know who played the boss? Why did he need a 20 in the first place?

  • @muppetfan33 The boss is played by Danny Epstein, and the reason he wanted a 20...well, this being Sesame Street, I'll encourage you to 'let your imagination run wild' on that one!

  • @d72jjpilc In real life, were Epstein and Raposo partners, or did one work for the other?

  • @muppetfan33 That I'm afraid I don't know.

  • @d72jjpilc Maybe he wanted two perfect "10's"!

  • @bowlersinger Hmmmm...interesting!

  • @d72jjpilc Back then, the curriculum only included counting to 20. In later years, I discovered that they added numbers up to 40.

Sesame Street really had an impression on me, as I used to be obsessed with many of the songs and skits when I was 3 years old and watched it a lot. I even amazed my grandparents and their friends by counting in Spanish once when I was at their house.

  • Is Fred's boss played by Bob who stars here on Sesame Street? He looks like him so I wasn't sure if it really was Bob.

  • As Fred was looking for a "20", I wonder why the first number he saw was an "11" instead of starting at "0" or "1" since the numbers were going from "11-20." Then when Fred found a "20", it was strange that it didn't show him bringing it to his boss if the gorilla was giving it to him unless, maybe that was Fred's boss dressed as a gorilla telling and showing Fred to stop looking for a "20" because his boss was telling him he already found one.

  • @afriendofbean Interesting thought indeed!

  • I guess maybe the reason why Fred didn't start at "0" or "1" here was because, the directors and producers of this skit only wanted this skit to be 2 minutes and maybe if Fred started at "0" or "1", the skit would probably be 3 or 4 minutes. Also, perhaps maybe if Fred's boss really was the gorilla, his boss should have taken off the face mask to show that it was his boss.

  • I like his questioning, "Huh?" at 0:26, & his expression at 01:41!

  • Wow, I haven't seen this in ages!!! Thank you so much for putting this up. To this day, I always remember the goofy face he used to make when he said "14".

  • love his facial expression when he see the gorilla

  • I agree. That was very funny. I guess that must be the same gorilla from the Mad Painter #5 skit where that gorilla helped the painter paint a "5" and that gorilla must love numbers a lot where he was holding a "20" since first he helped the painter paint a number and then he was holding a number.

  • Oh, BTW: Congratulations, Joe Raposo! For most of the skit, you were just a Gumshoe. But now, having found the 20 to bring back to your Boss, you are now officially a Sleuth! Congratulations! (a la Lynne Thigpen [1948-2003], of the Carmen San Diego TV series) -- albeit posthumously.

  • In Their Memory

    Danny Epstein: born October 14, 1925; died August 4, 2010 (age 84).

    Joe Raposo: born February 8, 1937; died February 5, 1989 (age 51).

    Rest In Peace

  • Répondre à cette vidéo... badaboom badading

  • AWESOME! What a great find! Where'd you find this? I so remember it and thought I was the only one who did.

  • Aw, shucks! I wish you would have shown the whole thing about the 2 girls fascinated with "DANNY!".

  • So that was Joe Raposo, huh? In those days, he had a slight resemblance to Frank Welker on WKRP In Cincinnati. I miss that show.

  • @muppetfan33 I thought the very same thing!

  • It's been decades since I saw this film!! The man's facial expressions used to scare the hell out of me when I was a child. I remember covering my face every time he'd approach a number. Seeing it now after all these years makes me laugh my head off. Thank you for posting it!!

  • I bet the person in the gorilla costume is the jogger who wore the tank top shirt with the number 16 on it.

  • Very funny clip and I remember seeing. But wouldn't you think that a grown 30-something year old man would know what a 20 is? Still funny though.

  • Is,nt that Carrol Spiney playing the boss?

  • WOW! I remember this clip well. Many of the detective's lines were hard to understand or I didn't know what he meant by certain things, but now that I have a better command of the English language 37 years later, I understand everything perfectly. I remember I didn't know what he meant by "a clue" or "I must be getting warmer." I also didn't know what a "guy running" was. I couldn't understand him when he said "oh boy oh boy oh boy" or "I'm on the trail now."

  • Wow! This is my first in 30 years since I've last seen this sketch on Sesame Street. Thank you raposofan for posting it on youtube!

  • YESSS!!! I remember bits of this one here and there, but I forgot how funny the gorilla looked!

Thanks for bringing back another great classic!

  • If you pause the clip at 0:18, you can see that they didn't think to use more than one wall. But then again, Sesame Workshop (or the Children's Television Workshop as it was called then) is a non-profit organization and probably just couldn't afford to set up more walls on the set at that time.

  • Everyone in that bridge scene must be extras...no one seems to out off by the fact theres a wierdo checking them out with a telescope!

  • OMG i never saw this one....

  • Wow, thank you so much for posting this! I remembered very little of this sketch, but it all came back to me when I saw the whole thing!

Could you post another sketch I remember seeing from way back when? This one involves a gorilla chasing a woman who is shouting "no!" the whole time, then the gorilla gets captured in a net. The "hero" and the woman walk off hand in hand while the gorilla is getting dragged behind them saying "no" over and over. Remember this one?

  • Interesting that there may be another segment like this (1-10) -- I only remember this because of the gorilla at the end. I vaguely remember being scared of that part because of its eyes and it kept going near the screen. LOL!

  • OMG --- You are the MAN! (or woman) --- I literally was dreaming of finding this someday.

I have not seen this since the mid 70s and I thought it was LOST FOREVER

Probably the most sought after clip I tried to find.

    THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!

  • @Billyjk72

I have to add my thanks! Great clip, glad to see it again!

  • If the boss waited just 9 more days, he would have had a 20 right in his office!

  • @Lupton2000 LOL!

  • @Lupton2000 Or, if he had a military clock, he would have also had a 20, since 20:00 military time is 8 PM!

  • There's another bit similar to this, starting with the rhyme:

My Mother gave me a penny

    To buy some candy;

    I didn't buy no candy,

    I bought some chewing gum.

It was in the spirit of this one, had some silly part like a magician tearing up a card, a guy sneaking a lick off a neighbor's lollipop on the subway, etc. Anybody recall this?

  • yes, thanks for posting this,i haven't seen this one in soooooooooooooo long and i agree joe raposo was a hidden comedic talent.

  • I had a telescope just like Fred's when I was young - I totally remember this scetch!! I also remember being told to stop walking around the house with the telescope held up to my eye "looking for clues" or I was going to get hurt!!

  • @jribakoff So you got the "You'll poke your eye out" lecture too.

  • I'd been thinking of this one for quite some time now, and I thought it might have been from some real TV show, borrowed for Sesame Street (like Happy Days, Bonanza, and some others), but If it were their own people, well, that's interesting.

  • Awesome, good things come to those who wait!

(BTW, was that gorilla wearing shoes?)

  • @JMaxfield09 Yes, he was

  • joe raposo did the voice of mr gil gickler in "pontoffel pock"

  • @sheepwolf2004 and the woman Pontoffel knocks down while flying the piano, and the man who complains that Pontoffel busted his flugelhorn

  • Funniest skit ever!!!

  • I liked how he got all excited at when he found the 15 ..the string of "oh boys" & then "!5! A CLUE!"

  • @mrjimmyg I could be mistaken, but I'm guessing that the actor in the gorilla suit is Jerry Nelson. The growling noise coming from the gorilla sounds a little like Herry Monster.

  • 0:25 Hmmm???? ROFL!!!! Peace.

  • I say, isn't this from the late 60s or the early 70s?

  • @muppetfan33 Early 1970's - 1971, to be exact.

  • I loved it when he did his little shuffle down the hall.

  • My God. I REMEMBER that. *Mind Blown*

I haven't thought about that skit in probably 30 years, but I have sent someone out to get me a 20 from time to time in the past.... Thanks for posting this vid!

  • PS, everybody: Joe's also the narrator in SS "What Do You Do With A Pet", and the dog in "This Bone Tastes Like The Letter I". You can recognize him easily on "Pet", but you can tell he's the dog in "Bone" by that tell-tale laugh "HAAAH!" when dog and boy go chasing the bone in bgound (just before the boy comes running with the bone and says, "I got it I got it, I got the letter I!")

  • @raposofan OMG, now I feel bad for the rude comment I made on that clip. I better delete it. Had no idea he did voice-over! What a man of many, many talents!! :)

  • OHHHHHH YEAHHHH!!!! Now, I totally remember!!!!! I used to luv this...!!d72jjpilc!!! I knew as soon as I saw it it would ring a bell! Thanx!!! Soooo much for uploading and ur endless hunt for this timeless classic!!!!! raposofan!

  • So there's the answer of who played the boss. The calendar which Fred finds the 11, happend to be the date of my birth (Jan 11, 1971)! Was that the day this was filmed?

  • @tvtimetravel Not sure! Maybe one day someone can find that out and will post it here.

  • @tvtimetravel No. January 11, 1971 was actually the date that the skit was first broadcast (on Episode #176). My own personal copy (sound only) was taken from Episode #1176 (the re-run, on November 13, 1978).

  • @tvtimetravel It may not be the exact date, but it was probably filmed around that time, because Sesame Street premiered on Nov. 20, 1969. Although I don't know exactly when I saw this, because I didn't have a concept of dates at the time since I was only 3 years old, I assume that my earliest memories were at that age, so it was sometime in 1973 that I saw this originally on TV.

  • Well, we all know it's my beloved Joe as Fred - but Bob Cranshaw has watched the video as of yesterdat and confirms that yes, that is the infamous old Danny Epstein, the Sesame Street band's percussionist, who plays "the boss"! Bob says the band did quite a few of these segments. That's bad news, because of course the new search for all those clips now begins! No rest for us, folks!

  • @raposofan "No rest for the weary, har-har-har!" (From the blue-headed mechanic fixing the word "BUS" -- the bus-driver had tangled with this taxi-cab, you know...)

  • @rayandreina Oh jeez, I remember that now... man, somebody needs to upload a Fat Blue retrospective - everything he's ever done. I love FB.

  • @rayandreina Frank Oz was the "har-har-har" mechanic, not Joe Raposo.

  • @raposofan Now if we can all jog our collective memories for details on the others....I'm drawing a blank at the moment....

  • About time this was posted! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! :) :) :)

  • Yes I also didn't recall the gorilla as looking quite that frightening, heh.

Also, the first 15 seconds Joe Raposo reminded me of actor Richard Masur. :)

  • Not only was Joe Raposo a musical genius, he was an underrated comedic talent. I hope other Fred the detective skits are out there.

  • @mrjimmyg I agree, Joe is hysterical. His expressions at 00:46 and 00:58 get a gut-laugh out of me every time. "A clue!"

  • The description didn't joggle the memory, but as soon as the music started, it was like yesterday! Peace.

  • One more thing - the way Joe 'freaks out' at the 1:42 mark is priceless! If there's anything that sticks out for me as a 39-year-old viewer, that would be it!

  • While we're at it - which episode is this 'Fred' clip from? The audio one Rick and I posted was from #1176, but what about this one? Just curious. Thanks.

  • @d72jjpilc No, I'm sorry -- this is a later episode that I must have missed. :-(

  • Wow. I'd totally forgotten all about this one. Of course, it all came back to me. An A-plus effort! Thanks!

  • I have to admit this is very cool to see, i never saw these before when i watched sesame street, but is that Joe Raspo at his prime, but good video.

  • Heather - you are great! Thank you! As much as I like listening to the music and spoken lines themselves in the audio version, it is the actual 'physical scene' which puts me back in the day! On top of that. there are some minor details (in the video) which I see today which I thought I remembered, but just happened to be a little 'off' in my recollection (though not by much!) Again, thank you!!!

  • @d72jjpilc Like they said on the Electric Company, "Right On!" Seeing this again for the 1st time since I was a kid, I now pick up on many things that I totally missed back in the early days! That "gorilla" looks so funny! I give my thanx to Heather too!

  • I thought I remembered every frame of this clip, but the one thing that I had completely forgotten was just how freaky that gorilla's face was...I was thinking typical gorilla suit, like that Mad Painter #5 skit.

So amazing to finally see this again, thanks a million.

  • Here's something completely unrelated, but strangely enough, this video inspired me to bring up something else worth hunting for:

Anyone remember the "Kermit the Hermit" skit? There was a guy who spent thousands of years looking for the hermit, and when they finally met, the guy just tags him "you're it".

Hopefully someone knows what I'm talking about. Either way, this video's cool. I also remember the clip that was about to play right at the end.

  • Yes. I do remember that clip. It starred Bob as the explorer.

  • AWESOME! Thanks raposofan and the others who inspired you for this quest!

  • Hey, I don't recall ever seeing this. Neato!

  • Where'd you get it from... a nearly complete episode?

  • At last! AT LAST!!! Cute lookin' kid! oops! back to the subject!

A fun spin on one guy's serious obsession! I am the first to admit I'd pay top dollar to ask Fred to get me a 20 too.

"Well, this is it!" (opens the door and then...) Love how the gorilla is into 20 as well :)

  • Yesterday was wonderful to hear this one again and now to see it too!

For years I've often thought about so many of these lines. A two and a zero ... together. A guy running ... in this weather? He's going to 18 ... ding!

1-11-71. An unseasonably warm day in New York that day, eh?!

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Nice work!

I wonder who plays Joe's boss? Is it Danny Epstein?

  • @NantoVision1 According to Sesame Street's bassist then, the inestimable Bob Cranshaw, *yes*!

  • If I could kiss you I would. This is my all time favorite skit from back in the day. Thank you very much for posting it. I can finally die in peace.

  • I haven't seen this clip since 1977! Thanks for the memories!

  • Congratulations. I just knew you'd find this rare and fun skit one of these days. :) And I love those lines Joe used like, "Cute Looking Kid." and "I must be getting warmer!" Yep, classic Sesame Street humor which I miss a lot. :)

  • YOU GOT IT!!!! YOU ACTUALLY GOT IT!!! What a great wqay to end what turned out to be a darn good week! Top of the favorite list it goes!

  • @aman1016 Ditto!
