@ZenAntics I dont remmeber any from the drive in movie do you know who mister delish is ? he is the cartoon character that tells you how many minutes till showtime when you go to the snack bar at the drive in /in an abondoned drive in movie film all over the floor in the projection room
Universal Pictures' Greatest Achievements: All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) Psycho (1960) Spartacus (1960) To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) Jaws (1975) National Lampoon's Animal House (1978) The Deer Hunter (1978) The Blues Brothers (1980) E.T. the Extra Terrestrial (1982) Back to the Future (1985) Out of Africa (1985) Backdraft (1991) Jurassic Park (1993) Schindler's List (1993) Apollo 13 (1995) The Mummy (1999) A Beautiful Mind (2001) Seabiscuit (2003) Ray (2004) King Kong (2005)
@cinemapsycho91 all those movies are garbage except for all quiet on the western front spartacus and to kill a mockingbird especially garbagy are the ones that murderer speilburg did
I was responding a comment of somebody who kept saying that Kubrick disowned Spartacus, as though it made it any less a Kubrick film. My point was that just because an artist is heavily self-critical, it doesn't make the artwork any less great.
This was a movie making time when they had tens of thousands of extras in the background as regular soldiers. Yet wasn't as expensive as today (not 'cause the money today is worth less than back then). In Lord of The Rings movie all the Orcs, etc.. where computer animated. Back then they'd have real people in the fight scenes, not this cheapo crap of today. Yet, if filmed today, Spartacus would cost over $900,000,000. Perhaps much more.
The irony of it is.........Kirk Douglas played a sort of communist icon in Spartacus, whereas Micheal Douglas played a capitalist icon in Gordon Gecko.
0:17-0:25 should of been included in the film, because no-one knows for sure how many roman armies spartacus really defeated, that part should of being kept in
@XXmissybooXX he wasnt the initial director he was filling in for somebody else and kirk douglas was the producer I think he made a mistake when he didnt use alex norths music in 2001 good thing he didnt make the same mistake twice.
@burpingbabes15 Blood an Sand, or Sand and Blood superior to this? Uh, no it ain't. Not on any level. Shit cast, music, performances, production design, direction, you name it.
@RogueRotting360 There is nothing wrong with the movie spartacus but in the trailer they lie when they say 1:04 that spartacus is invinsible he was defeated by drabba in the areana and defeated by crassus [ hes so crass] in battle
@jg2904 What do you mean trashed he said he didnt like them?he was one of the most prolific composers of romantic music [dimitri tiomkin produced a movier about him the music lovers ] alan hovhaness destroyed 2000 compositions because he didnt like being called the american sibelius but he did it all over with many symphonies
I look at old movies about Rome and Itallian culture, But I am Itallian and grew up in an Itallian family that came from Italy. I think that there is no movie that expresses Itallian behavior, movements and character like The passion of Christ, also... Rocky, Gladiator And Jesus (2000) starring Jeremy Sisto as Jesus and Gary Oldman as governer pilate (actually said like... Paul-latt with an Itallian accent. Or also in some diaolects... Peel-latt
It's by far the best of the historical and biblical themed epics of the period .. the human drama is as compelling as the big spectacular moments, which is unique IMO.
Historically speaking, the "real" Spartacus after the big battle, was never found, but in the film(for dramatic pathos) he is crucified alongside his confederates.

During the arduous, long shoot, Tony Curtis allegedly asked Jean Simmons, "Who do I have to screw to get off this film?" Some versions of the interaction include Simmons shouting back, "When you find out, let me know."
Hedda Hopper and John Wayne, both leaders in Hollywood's powerful right-wing element, publicly condemned the film as "Marxist propaganda" prior to its release.
Another interesting thing I noticed with these old epic trailers is that they always say they are the greatest movies ever. I.e. the trailer of Gone With the Wind, The Ten Commandments, etc.

How true they were. Imagine if the Hollywood crap-shoot decided to churn out a remake of this, they'd fail miserably.
