@Jevezy - What? How can you even suggest Elvis copied it? First: Elvis & Bobby Darin weren't just friends -- they were close friends. Darin himself could have suggested that Elvis cover his song. Did you think of that? And Elvis recorded this track NINE freaking years after Bobby's and this Darin original song was a B-side not a hit side. The flip of "Bill Bailey." So? Where's this Elvis thievery? Let's blame Cass Elliott & Cissy Houston also -- they covered it around the same time.
@lastrada52: Here we go again, every time I turn around there is an original song, and there is Elvis singing a copy of the song, What is wrong with damn picture? WAKE THE HELL UP, Elvis had a few hits, but he spent most of his time re-recording white and black folks music and he was not their friends or would not exploit their music. You need to stop making out the so called King of Rock and Roll to be more talented that he was. He was a song vampire.
@Jevezy - Then lump Ray Charles, Johnny Mathis, Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra & even Bobby Darin in there with Elvis as exploiters. They did exactly what you accuse Elvis of. He had a few hits? He holds sales records for the most in several categories. Re-record? Some songs were never hits by the previous artist. He wasn't a songwriter. Many songwriters & artists made money when Elvis covered their songs -- black & white. Song vampire? Yeah, Elvis will be heard when you & I are gone.
@lastrada52: Of course other singers have recorded songs that were already recorded, but Elvis made a profession of it. There is no damn song on YouTube that you can look at without seeing a version by Elvis, he was a song vampire, and yes, he will be around a long time because he is the white people's King of Rock and Roll and white folks like to keep their Kings alive.
@Jevezy - You know jevezy, why do you resort to what I consider a reverse racist remark. "White people's King?" A statement like? Despite the fact black artists such as Jackie Wilson, James Brown, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, B.B. King, Ray Charles, Sammy Davis, jr., Johnny Mathis, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jackson -- to name a few -- all loved & respected Elvis. Are they hypocrites? There are tons of songs Elvis recorded -- never performed by other artists. You have no point.
@lastrada52: You whites worshiped Elvis, blacks did not. Stop trying to make him out to be more relevant than he was to the world of Rock and Roll. The true king of Rock and Roll is Little Richard, but you whites would never accept it, so you named this barely talented song vampire and named him King of Rock and Roll. I have no respect for him, he does not deserve the title, it belongs to Little Richard. You are spreading lies to make Elvis look good, God how pathetic.
@Jevezy - Why so much racism Jevezy. It's not necessary. Music -- the one thing where blacks & whites worked well together -- no where else is it evident. Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, they wouldn't stay at a hotel that didn't take Billie Holiday. White people's king? BB King said Elvis was the greatest blues singer he ever heard. BB King a liar? Little Richard turned to religion, had few hits. Elvis doesn't need anyone to defend him. I know I can't convince you. It doesn't matter anyway.
@lastrada52: BB King would never say that that Elvis was the greatest blues singer when BB King himself is King of the Blues, get a hold of yourself, your lies are not convincing anyone. Elvis is an imitator, an impersonator and a song vampire. It does not matter if Little Richard turned to religion, the fact remains that he is the true King of Rock and Roll. Go ahead, keep worshiping your "so called" white King of Rock and Roll, ignorance is bliss, so keep being blissful.
@Jevezy - The BB King quote was from an interview, I've seen it more than once & you may come across it (& probably deny it, LOL). Usually when you compliment someone you leave yourself out no matter how great you may be. I'm not going to waste my time trying to persuade you Jevezy, your mind is made up. Elvis still has millions of fans, sold a billion records worldwide, continues to sell, has black fans for sure, continues to influence others. What you think...just doesn't matter.
@lastrada52: I am a BB King fan, I have ALL his records, I have collected many magagazine and newpaper interview he has done. Elvis cannot shine BB's shoes with his tongue. The King of the Blues would in no way be stupid enough to designate such a title to a half-azz talented, song vampire like Elvis. I do not contend the fact that white folks still buys his records or his legion of fans, but then again that still does not make him worthy of the title King of Rock & Roll.
@Jevezy - As stated earlier Jevezy, I'm not going to waste time trying to persuade you. You don't like Elvis. Your perogative. The reasons you don't like Elvis are baseless. Now you suggest BB King isn't "stupid enough" to say what he said. That's fine too. You denegrate all the black entertainers & black fans that DO like & support him then. That's a shame. He would be King of R&R simply by his worldwide sales alone. A few billion people out there like him -- they can't all be white.
@lastrada52: You cannot prove what is not true. The truth is Elvis, is a song vampire, had a little talent but spent most of his time singing back other folks songs. King of Rock & Roll, King of Blues my azz, number of records sold don't mean sh**. Elvis couldn't write a song to save his damn life. Please try to impress someone who gives a damn about this loser, I don't.
@Jevezy - We're on Bobby Darin site Jevezy & launching our own bullshit editorials about Elvis. We're both out of line no matter what we think. I already told you -- I won't waste time trying to persuade you. Elvis certainly doesn't need your support when he has BB King's, Jackie Wilson's, James Brown's, Sammy Davis, Jr., Rufus Thomas, Chuck Berry, Arthur Crudup & Muhammad Ali. They make my point for me. Yours just doesn't matter. Let's leave Bobby Darin to his site & not be selfish.
@lastrada52: You mean you had better stop disrespecting him with your stupid, obsessive support of Elvis, and your lies about how much black entertainers thought Elvis was the best thing to ever happen to Rock & Roll and Blues. Give me a break. Ignorance is bliss, so I will leave you to enjoy our blissfulness.
@Jevezy - Everything said Jevezy can be substantiated online, in books, interviews & millions of people. Your slip of the tongue: "enjoy our blissfulness" is true. It is you who is wallowing in blissful ignorance. But it's OK - you have a deep rooted bitterness - from where it comes I don't know - but nothing - NOTHING - I could say to you -- politely or diplomatically - will change your mind. I'll stick with my Black artists who are on record as admirers of Elvis (& Bobby Darin).
@lastrada52; Yeah, you stick with those lies dumbo, oh please one swallow does not make a summer so don't get excited over one error you retard. I will continue to enjoy I'll be there sung by Bobby Darrin. The best version ever of this song ever. I look forward to the day when we can enjoy a song by the original singers, without some fool mentioning Elvis or seeing a copy of Elvis singing the same damn song.
@Jevezy - Again, I need to remind you that I have responded to you respectfully & you have chosen to be indignant (look it up). You lost the argument by how you respond. By the way genius, Cassandra Wilson has covered many white songs; Ray Charles has covered many white songs; Louis Armstrong has covered many white songs; the Drifters have covered many white songs. So what are you saying? Elvis can't cover a song? There's no basis to your argument. Artists cover others all the time. B&W
@lastrada52: It is not a matter of singers covering one or two songs, it is done all the the time. It is a matter of Elvis making a hobby of covering songs, that is why I call him a song vampire. He does it to white singers and black singers. I am sick looking at a damn video on YouTube and every damn time I turn around there is another video posted in the list at the side showing him singing the same damn song. Enough of this song vampire.
@Jevezy - Jevezy, many songwriters of that day pitched songs to Elvis & if he covered your song & had a hit it could put a writer on the map. No one else sang "If I Can Dream," "Heartbreak Hotel," "Don't Be Cruel," "Suspicious Minds" (Dionne Warwick sang this Mark James song first but it didn't chart), "Burning Love." Elvis has many songs no one else did. Johnny Mathis, Andy Williams, Sinatra, Ella Fitzergerald covered other people's hits. Their fans wanted their versions that's all.
@lastrada52 : Can't you get it through you skull that I do not care about singers covering other singers' songs. The fact is that Elvis could not get make a dime without covering other folks' songs, he was a song vampire, it does not matter how songs become a hit, when you have a man who spends the majority of his singing career covering other folks' songs he is a song vampire. Learn to deal with it. Your arguing with me will NOT CHANGE MY MIND.
@Jevezy - Can't you get it through YOUR skull that I'm not interested in changing your mind & have said so in my posts. You don't support your argument. Elvis then is the ONLY "song vampire" artist. No one else. If he never "covered" a song then he'd NOT be a song vampire? EVERYONE else can cover songs by others & they're NOT song vampires? Did it occur to you the money songwriters made when Elvis covered their songs? They wanted him to cover their songs. What are they? Song pimps?
@lastrada52:Do you honestly believe that the songwriters would have turned him down? They wanted to make money and did not give a damn. The bottom line still remains that he spent almost his entire singing career covering other folks songs - both black and white - and he is a song vampire. He had no shame in his game, come on now, just singing covers all the time? The supposed King of Rock and Roll? Give me a damn break. He is a song vampire, deal with it.
@Jevezy - Thanks for writing back with clarity. I appreciate it. You sound better this way. Jevezy, not all Elvis songs were "covers." In Elvis' day, before the Beatles & popularity of singer-songwriters (Dylan), many singers traditionally went to songwriters (who pitched songs to artists). Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Johnny Mathis, Nat King Cole -- they all did it. Elvis did nothing out of the ordinary. You can dislike Elvis. It's OK. But "song vampire" - that could even be Sammy Davis jr.
@lastrada52 : Elvis was a song vampire, you can name all the singers who did covers, and yes you can pick a black man like Sammy Davis Jnr. to call a song vampire, but hell that does not remove the fact that Elvis has a very short career and for the rest of his life he sang covers. There is nowhere on YouTube you can go to look at a song that was recorded when he was alive without seeing his face with a cover of the song. The "so called" King of Rock & Roll was a song vampire.
@Jevezy - As stated earlier, u just don't like Elvis. That's fine Jevezy -- u have that right. You won't affect his millions of fans, vast record sales, record breaking performances, his affect on pop culture, people who did admire him. You won't put a blemish on his status in entertainment. My only problem is your "reason." "Song vampire," just not a strong enough reason to hate someone. I'm not a fan of Ali, but that doesn't mean I don't respect what he accomplished. Know what I mean?
@lastrada52: He was a song vampire, and it is too bad you cannot deal with it. I did not tell him to spend all his time covering other folks songs, he qualifies for that name because that is all he did 90% of his time. Respect who? Elvis? Elvis is for you to respect, he is your King of Rock and Roll, you respect him.
@Jevezy - U still don't make a good argument on Elvis. The King of R&R title was not a self-proclaimed one - so forget that silly crap. Even if you insist on believing the tag -- that's ok. But to hate Elvis so much because of that - it's too bad. U miss some of the better stuff then. Instead, you write Elvis off. We can agree on liking Bobby Darin. (But, even Darin respected Elvis...does that diminish Darin for you? If not, why are WE debating? Bobby Darin would defend Elvis, Jevezy.)
@lastrada52: Why should it matter to you what I think of Elvis? You keep kneeling at the mention of his name, visiting Graceland and blissfully believing that he was more talented that he really was. What I believe is irrelevant. Nevertheless it is mine to belief, so I believe he is a song vampire, so be it, you keep naming people who defended him or respected him, that means absolutely nothing to me, I make up my own mind.
@Jevezy - Are you reading what I'm writing? I don't care what you think of Elvis. It doesn't bother me & I never visited Graceland. Your fantasy. You say he's a song vampire -- fine. I'm telling you that if you can't back up your opinion with more substantial reasoning, no one is going to take you seriously. No one will respect your opinion. But, "it means absolutely nothing..." to you. OK. There are far more important things in this world to argue about Jevezy. Bye.

I agree that you are wasting your time trying to defend Elvis, it is best for you to move on because each post you submit makes absolutely no sense. Denying that something exists does not mean it does not. So denying that Elvis was a song vampire does not mean he was not one.

This is a Bobby Darin YouTube site. I'm not going to bore Bobby Darin fans with this conversation any longer. What part of "Bye" did you not understand?

Guess what, I'm a 24-year-old white girl and think Little Richard did way more for rock than Elvis ever did. I think Elvis was over rated.
