@BenCarmelful Well maybe he's just not good at it lol. Or maybe he never had to or it didn't suit him. Or he feels vulnerable. I have a brown belt in TKD but I suck at doing what people call "the chicken kick". It's standard for most TKD artists. I can do consecutive kicks and combos alternating both legs pretty quick, It's just when it comes to that move I suck and I never liked it for many reasons.
MMA is always worth a shot if you like martial arts, its my fav for sure (even if i do tend to get smacked about a bit/lot)! its a really great work out, attracts loads of fun classmates, you only have to fight as hard (contact-wise) as you feel like so anyone can have a laugh, guys an girls. Plus its practical, maybe not as hardcore as Krav, but still very handy!
@QofLife69 Maybe Bas is a Judo black belt since Judo is a national sport in the Netherlands. But sometimes people don't declare it because they think that it does not matter to state if you have a Judo black belt or not.
@teslic100 ufc made ground fighting popular? i disagree. wrestling, the greatest form of ground fighting as been apart of almost every human culture since the time of ancient Samaria (the first human culture to exist)
and as a wrestler i can promise u that even and unarmed ground fighter will win in a fight against a standup fighter with a knife.
@123brown1 hello friend, this is no disrespect to wrestling, I do enough martial arts (judo, BJJ, aikido, eskrima and I have done taekwondo) to note that a knfe attack does happen in a second if someone wants to stab you they will kill you by in the back, the first thing your taught in eskrima, is that their is no such thing as a master in knife defence, because how many times do you need to be stabbed to be a master, it only takes one mistake, which even experts do.
@Xero555000 Not really, no. Just wanted to say that the people who made the show could've researched a little better. Further, the confidence of a lot of US American keyboard warriors does get somehow annoying every now and then.
jason is better because he is trained in a mixture of arts namely jkd which is exactly that, bill is not and is big and awkward he can only fit into karate or boxing
@JackHammer360 still consider that what we know may not be everything that they know. we're not sure if they were told that by Rutten himself. the whole truth isnt always in our reach
i love how they go like an upercut is like shoot ing a guy in the face with a rocket launcher on fire and then feeding him to a lion and then throwing the lion off a 30 story buildin during an EARTHQUAKE LOL!!!
@AceofDlamonds But you're forgetting that hand to hand combat still happend. Look at modern warfare for example, do you really see guys running around fist fighting? No, but it still happens
well yeah...but the guy wasn't there...and the way he said it made it sound like the double leg had a mentionable role in the battle, which it likely didn't, save for maybe the end of the battle when all hell broke loose and the remaining Spartan's spread and fought. Still, I doubt you'd want to be down in that free 4 all.
Yeah I'm aware that many warriors, such as samurai, with their relatively light armor, were trained to grapple or strike opponents empty handedly.
Bas is a better presenter and a better personality than Bill or Jason. It's still cool that they made this show. It's for people a little more casual to the martial arts but still cool
Bill reminds me of a guy I had to train with when I was doing karate: Since I was stronger than the other teenagers in the group I had to train With "The Crusher" as we nicknamed him. He was about 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighed around 260 lbs. He never got the techniques right no matter how our sensei tried to break them down to him. He also failed to achieve the green belt. But he was fun to train with because he didnt talk shit like the others and always tried his best in everything.
Ummm...wait...isn't Bill a former wrestler? How come he can't even do a double leg takedown? My budds and I pulled it off on our first time. Well, mine was more out of instinct. But the whole point is, wrestling also utilizes basic but indispensable and essential moves like the DLT. It's something you're gonna needing from the start onwards. Especially if you're a ground specialist.
Why does everyone hate on bill sure jason is better but bill is still gd watch the sambo episodes final fight for evidence. Bill dominates. In these fight jason was fighting someone much lighter than him and bill was fighting on of the former heavyweight champions. In plain terms bill is pretty fucken gd. I will admit that Jason is better but thats becasue he has like 20 proffesional MMA wins :D
@1jakaroo lo. even if they fight heavy weight champions doesnt mean theyre good already. They dont do there best when fighting this host because if they do there gonna get there asses off
@1jakaroo It's because they could have picked anyone to be on this show... so why not pick an actual martial artist instead of an ex-football player???
@Mikeyc2k6 What they should have is one person who knows nothing about the fighting technique go against someone else who knows nothing about the technique after they have trained through something like this.

double leg take down...is from judo morote gari...it is used a lot in rugby, made famous by lote tuqiri, australian winger....there are stories he was taught by a judo master
My Kung Fu master said "Don't ever use Double Leg Takedown unless you've punch him in the face first to draw attention, or otherwise he can just Down Elbow your neck and you die."
@nchang227 It sounds like he never experienced it, punch or no punch you don't know what your attacker will do next in a fight. The moment he connects with you, you lose balance aka your feets connection with the ground, at that moment you don't have power to punch anymore, let alone the time cause you are flying ... anyway that would work only against an idiot who telegraphs his intention but not against a trained person. If you don't believe me try it with someone who knows how to do it ...
@23viktor23 The fighters that start to train directly mma, they don't have finesse but fighters that come from specialized styles like judo, jiu-jitsu, wrestling, muay thai, karate, boxing, sanda etc are wery elegant. And it's always harder to be elegant in heavyweight than in other catagories ... watch some fights of Cung Le or Genki Sudo and you will see it.
the double leg takedown is a rugby tackle. Bill had problems wif it because he has american football experience. thus making him uncomfortable with that technique. being in american football means hard hits to the upper body, using brute force and brute force only. whereas rugby tackles need alot of technique.
Fun fact: The slow motion Sambo hip toss is being filmed twice as fast, so that the footage seems like they are doing it really slow although they are clearly not.
The camera captures the frames much quicker than it normally would by turning the handle on its side, given the looks of the film, much faster. Another reason why old films look like they are moving so quick it's, probably, because of the rythm the handle is being turned.
Not 100% sure if I'm right but just thought I'd point out =)
6:25 - 6:32 "Prior to the late 1800s, most martial arts opperated independant of outside influence." you Americans should REALLY learn more about history. This is just so wrong. Any 6th grader in Asia could prove this statement wrong.
@Xero555000 Sounds like a cliché answer from an American. Anyway, only little kids, lesser gifted people, and people from backward oriented regions would make a comment such as yours. Just calm down.
@GaolisVideoLog First of all... I'm a grown man... second of all... I can say with a certain degree of uncertainty that i am smarter than you are or will ever be (chemical engineering degree)... third i could probly beat you up... fourth I live in the USA the greatest freaking country in the whole God damned world... so to hell with you
@Xero555000 Late reply: Good to know you're smarter than me. May I say one thing though, as has been said by someone else, for a native speaker of English with, I assume BA degree (???), your punctuation is even worse than mine. Also, you're proving my point by saying, "USA the greatest freaking country in the whole God damned world". I'm just saying, you keep on giving cliché answers.
@GaolisVideoLog well thats great that we dont know anything but it seems to me only respecting asian martial arts is a mistake compare the effectiveness of a modified wrestler or Brazilian jiu jitsu artist with a fighter trained to strike only to disrespect a cultures martial arts is rude all are important and have valuable techniques to teach. and i bet that many american fighters could make you submit or KO you very quickly in a fight
@thenugslayer420 Late reply: I didn't say that I only respect Asian fighting styles. I just said that Asians can prove this statement wrong. And as somebody here said, "this is the history channel". Further I said that mixing styles happened way earlier thatn the 18th ct. So, your larguement is not making that much sense to me. Sorry.
@GaolisVideoLog... I hate to say it Gaolis... but before you attack americans with their 6th grader knowledge... you better learn how to spell "opperated" (operated) and "independant" (independent).
@LilyShangrila For someone who lives in Philippines he speaks English pretty well and he's right. How well do you speak Filipino or any American for example?
@imnotokeither Late reply: I said, Asian 6th graders would know better. I didn't say US 6th graders would know better. I don't expect 6th graders from a different continent to know Asian history. However, I expect journalists from a different continent to do good research if they don't know something. I assume the makers have a degree in mass com. or journalism, right? So, they should know what they let the hosts say, right?
Yes it was way simplified.....but the idea was colonialism was a major driving factor in the expansion of arts across the GLOBE. I would say RELATIVELY independant before the 1800's.
@AceofDlamonds Late reply: I mean, European Colonialism started off in the 16th ct. What I noticed form talking to Europeans however, is that they do not engage too much into Asian history (for understandable reasons). The US Americans I met so far seem to know even less about Europe or Asia. One thing completely neglected here, e.g. is the trade between Ryukyu, Japan, China, the Southeast Asian thalassocracies & their influence on martial arts prior European arrival.
@GaolisVideoLog im not sure who is giving them their info but on almost every people say their facts are wrong and it is funny because this is the history channel
@jinkazamalovnat Yeah, but let's just take Kuntao (拳道) as an example. This martial art made its way to Philippines & Indonesia during the Yuan Dynasty (1280-1368AD) The Southeast Asian variety of Kuntao is very different from the mainland China one. Because it incorporated the Southeast Asian style now. And this is no exception.
@Rax01 Late reply: I'll give an example based on my home island. The name is Luzon (original name is Chinese written 吕宋). During the Ming dynasty, Luzon was unaffected by the Haijin (海禁). Which made it attractive to Spain. Before the 16th ct. the most famous cities were Tondo (东都) & Vigan (美岸). Now, there was a Samurai base in Tondo & in 1600 Brunei attacked the island & founded the city state Maynilad (nowadays Manila/Maynila). This is archaeological fact & primary documents.
@manilamerc Late reply: Pt. 1: Say there's only 1 martial art style taught throughout the globe. You'll see that, even though the techniques are all the same, they will look different due to minor differences in anatomy & the way people move. You see, every person moves differently & has a different muscle density. Therefore, even if they do the same technique, the result will differ. Out of this, people will start to prefer certain things over others, resulting in 1 martial art growing apart.
@manilamerc Late reply: Pt. 2: Now, then certain things will be left out. But once people meet again, they'll eventually see techniques which might add to their style. For example. European crusades changed a lot. Carpets were introduced, steel was improved, & fighting strategies changed. In Asia, there was tremendous trade going on between the countries before colonization. People knew the other styles & adjusted & adapted their own. Or let's take Greek pancration. I could go in further.
@GaolisVideoLog lol you really don't hear anything? Hearing is part of situational awareness and is one of the keys to fighting effectively, especially when you have multiple opponents.
@pwnageAAXAApker A fight in a ring is different from a self-defensive situation. In SD, you check out your surrounding b4 anything else. This way you're prepared when your program runs. In a competition, you mostly hear some noises, nothing more. It's the adrenaline. That's why referees always touch the fighters & not just shout something. Also, you don't feel most of the blows towards you. Your brain switches to beta-waves (better focus) + the adrenaline = you pretty much numb to most things.
@GaolisVideoLog well I've never experienced that in all my years of fighting. I've always known about adrenaline's causes and effects, but since adrenaline is the body's way of saying that it fears something, I've always thought of it as a weakness not a strength. I still think of it this way- if something clouds your mind it's a weakness even if it strengthens your body because a fight is really nothing more than a sweaty bloody chess game...
@pwnageAAXAApker You know, in Asia we say, that there are only two people w/o fear: liars & psychopaths. Not only is adrenaline vital so that you can feel affection for another person, feel lucky or happy, it also triggers the "fight or flight" syndrome which enhances your muscles durability and endurance. This is the only way full contact athletes can stand through all of this. In dangerous situations you'll secrete it automatically. It's not as if your brain shuts off. Don't let that happen.
@GaolisVideoLog well it's not that I don't have fear- any human is going to have some kind of fear, but I guess it's been more of a strategic decision not to fear- kind of thinking whatever happens happens. whether you fear it or not wouldn't make a difference physically but would defeat you mentally. It might also be because I know that the opponent I am fighting in the ring isn't trying to kill me or anything. Also with SA you don't just know surroundings before but keep a watch on them then.
@pwnageAAXAApker I think you're a bit too young to understand this. You're confusing that with panicking. Listen, seems you never had to defend yourself in real life. Hope you never will. That's anything but fun, since you have to keep your mind focused on certain things.
if bill is a former wrestler, how come its hard for him to execute a double leg takedown?!

May I say one thing though, as has been said by someone else, for a native speaker of English with, I assume BA degree (???), your punctuation is even worse than mine. @GaolisVideoLog well thats great that we dont know anything but it seems to me only respecting asian martial arts is a mistake compare the effectiveness of a modified wrestler or Brazilian jiu jitsu artist with a fighter trained to strike only to disrespect a cultures martial arts is rude all are important and have valuable techniques to teach. and i bet that many american fighters could make you submit or KO you very quickly in a fight
thenugslayer420 1 year ago

SerbianJudo 1 year ago
@SerbianJudo exactly thats the point, americans dont know much about asian martial arts so why should a 6th grader know that..
imnotokeither 1 year ago
@imnotokeither Late reply: I said, Asian 6th graders would know better. I didn't say US 6th graders would know better. I don't expect 6th graders from a different continent to know Asian history. However, I expect journalists from a different continent to do good research if they don't know something. I assume the makers have a degree in mass com. or journalism, right? So, they should know what they let the hosts say, right?

Yes it was way simplified.....but the idea was colonialism was a major driving factor in the expansion of arts across the GLOBE. I would say RELATIVELY independant before the 1800's.
AceofDlamonds 1 year ago
@AceofDlamonds Late reply: I mean, European Colonialism started off in the 16th ct. What I noticed form talking to Europeans however, is that they do not engage too much into Asian history (for understandable reasons). The US Americans I met so far seem to know even less about Europe or Asia. One thing completely neglected here, e.g. is the trade between Ryukyu, Japan, China, the Southeast Asian thalassocracies & their influence on martial arts prior European arrival.

jinkazamalovnat 1 year ago
@jinkazamalovnat Yeah, but let's just take Kuntao (拳道) as an example. This martial art made its way to Philippines & Indonesia during the Yuan Dynasty (1280-1368AD) The Southeast Asian variety of Kuntao is very different from the mainland China one. Because it incorporated the Southeast Asian style now. And this is no exception.

@GaolisVideoLog
Well at least tell us dumb people how it really went down....
oh wait... you weren´t alive prior to the late 1800´s.. so how would you know whats true?.
When talking about history you shouldn´t forget .. there´re are many versions of many things in history.
But your right on one thing... a lot of us Americans need to pick up a book more often and not only relay on TV to educate us....
Rax01 1 year ago 2
@Rax01 Late reply: I'll give an example based on my home island. The name is Luzon (original name is Chinese written 吕宋). During the Ming dynasty, Luzon was unaffected by the Haijin (海禁). Which made it attractive to Spain. Before the 16th ct. the most famous cities were Tondo (东都) & Vigan (美岸). Now, there was a Samurai base in Tondo & in 1600 Brunei attacked the island & founded the city state Maynilad (nowadays Manila/Maynila). This is archaeological fact & primary documents.

@GaolisVideoLog how did mma begin?
manilamerc 10 months ago
@manilamerc Late reply: Pt. 1: Say there's only 1 martial art style taught throughout the globe. You'll see that, even though the techniques are all the same, they will look different due to minor differences in anatomy & the way people move. You see, every person moves differently & has a different muscle density. Therefore, even if they do the same technique, the result will differ. Out of this, people will start to prefer certain things over others, resulting in 1 martial art growing apart.
GaolisVideoLog 8 months ago
@GaolisVideoLog sounds like Bruce Lee thinking
manilamerc 8 months ago
@manilamerc Late reply: Pt. 2: Now, then certain things will be left out. But once people meet again, they'll eventually see techniques which might add to their style. For example. European crusades changed a lot. Carpets were introduced, steel was improved, & fighting strategies changed. In Asia, there was tremendous trade going on between the countries before colonization. People knew the other styles & adjusted & adapted their own. Or let's take Greek pancration. I could go in further.

@pwnageAAXAApker Really? I don't hear shit when I'm preparing or fighting.
GaolisVideoLog 1 year ago
@GaolisVideoLog lol you really don't hear anything? Hearing is part of situational awareness and is one of the keys to fighting effectively, especially when you have multiple opponents.
pwnageAAXAApker 1 year ago
@pwnageAAXAApker A fight in a ring is different from a self-defensive situation. In SD, you check out your surrounding b4 anything else. This way you're prepared when your program runs. In a competition, you mostly hear some noises, nothing more. It's the adrenaline. That's why referees always touch the fighters & not just shout something. Also, you don't feel most of the blows towards you. Your brain switches to beta-waves (better focus) + the adrenaline = you pretty much numb to most things.
GaolisVideoLog 1 year ago
@GaolisVideoLog well I've never experienced that in all my years of fighting. I've always known about adrenaline's causes and effects, but since adrenaline is the body's way of saying that it fears something, I've always thought of it as a weakness not a strength. I still think of it this way- if something clouds your mind it's a weakness even if it strengthens your body because a fight is really nothing more than a sweaty bloody chess game...
pwnageAAXAApker 1 year ago
@pwnageAAXAApker You know, in Asia we say, that there are only two people w/o fear: liars & psychopaths. Not only is adrenaline vital so that you can feel affection for another person, feel lucky or happy, it also triggers the "fight or flight" syndrome which enhances your muscles durability and endurance. This is the only way full contact athletes can stand through all of this. In dangerous situations you'll secrete it automatically. It's not as if your brain shuts off. Don't let that happen.
GaolisVideoLog 1 year ago
@GaolisVideoLog well it's not that I don't have fear- any human is going to have some kind of fear, but I guess it's been more of a strategic decision not to fear- kind of thinking whatever happens happens. whether you fear it or not wouldn't make a difference physically but would defeat you mentally. It might also be because I know that the opponent I am fighting in the ring isn't trying to kill me or anything. Also with SA you don't just know surroundings before but keep a watch on them then.
pwnageAAXAApker 1 year ago
@pwnageAAXAApker I think you're a bit too young to understand this. You're confusing that with panicking. Listen, seems you never had to defend yourself in real life. Hope you never will. That's anything but fun, since you have to keep your mind focused on certain things.
