I noticed a comment where you said that you checked the router for the IPad mac address, and it was overloaded. Did it still have a list of addresses dating back to the 21st? If so, please send me the complete, definitive list at dactadork@gmail.com. have linux, windows, and mac hacking machines at my disposal, as well as many friends, one of whom has hacked through world-class firewalls for fun. I, and many of my friends and family members, know what we are doing.

the hard part is wirting an autorun file which works with OSX (i have no idea on how the OSX is written, nor in which library of codes)

since the MAC address is a no go there is one other way,

if you have any accounts set up with the ipad that can resive messages you can send an autoconfig file over email or sms. the malware probably needs to be written by someone who have knowledge on the OSX. simply write a program that records the IP that the ipad is connected to or last synced with, i have made a program for my android which sendes the IP the phone was last synced with to my email. that part is simple,

If you did have the MAC address you could sniff for it with kismet or some such but remember google got in a lot of trouble collecting info that way.

The only thing I could ever come up with would be a guide to get the UDID/UUID and possible IMEI.

I ran wireshark on my computer, and connected my iPhone to my wireless to see if anything would come up,

and indeed my iPhone broadcasted alot of information, but never anything from the UDID :(

In turn, this renders the UDID useless, unless Apple can give out information about the MAC-address.

Even then you would need to visit every home of the people invited :(

Guys, I just can't stress enough how important it is to find the MAC of the iPad. And no, you really can't figure out the MAC from the serial number. What you could do is send an email to an address that was set up on the iPad, with something that could attract the thief as the subject. Then add a link to your website, and hopefully you have some tracking analytics on your site, such as stat counter or google analytics.

The IP could be useful too, especially if the iPad is Jailbroken and has

I'm not sure that you can derive the MAC address from the serial number of the unit without calling Apple, the two are pretty mutually exclusive, and even then they might not have that info. However, if you do have WiFi running and want to go that route, both the iPad and iPad 2 9 (to my knowledge) use a "7C:6D:62" MAC address prefix of for both the WiFi and Bluetooth. Unfortunately, a MAC address is useless unless you're on the same collision domain (the same IOS layer 2 vlan for instance).

You can't convert the serial to MAC addr. But My tactic would be to look in your router logs for the MAC address. Once you have that its a process of elimination by just drive by sniffing the 40 people at home. The MAC is outside the 802.11 frame so its trivial to sniff with wireshark. You could probably even write a script to do it automatically.

I'll take a wild shot.. did you have facebook installed? If so, does your facebook track logged in devices? If so, login to your facebook account and go to Account settings > security > active sessions. Long shot but this may show you where the person is and if so, you can cross reference the folks from the party to that location. Good luck!

My Thinkpad x61 Tablet has a 'laptop lojack' style security chip inside of it, I would hope that the ipad has a similar system in it.

as for the mac address, while factory resetting the device wouldn't have any effect on this, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a masking tool to spoof it.

Either way, it takes a special kind of kleptomaniac to even consider that this would be a good idea. Odds are they sold the unit to some unsuspecting person as soon as they could.

was the apple Mobile tracking feature enabled on it? ipads have the MobileMe option to track it globally .... otherwise there is only one other option, call apple, or go to the apple store and request they check their records to obtain the mac address assigned to the hardware based on that serial number then call the police and have a search warrent issued requesting that mac address be located on the in local internet services ... then they can provide a where and when of it's location.

If she ever used the iPad on her Wifi router you can view the logs and get us the MAC address from the DHCP table, as long as you don't let the DHCP lease fall off.

If they setup iCloud on the iPad then they could log into iCloud and view where it is along with other things using their Apple ID - but depending on how long it was stolen then the thief might already have factory reset the iPad, rendering this method useless, but it's an idea. I am personally emailing Tim cook about the issue right now.

Is the "real" computer the IPad was set up from a Windows Mac or Linux? was it connected by cable or ssh and was it ever connected to a Bluetooth device (that could be connected to a pc) airplay?

The Mac address should be printed on the side of the box it came in
