He is sooooo handsome and sexy. Too bad he can't sing. Not that he can't sing just that he doesn't have a show voice. But as he said, they were concentrating more on the story rather the music. However----the music is so incredible it was unfortunate that both he and Raoul could not do the music justice. Emmy, of course had the right kind of voice for the music.
Hey have you checked the date on that comment? I've actually changed my mind since then, not completely but I do realise I sounded childish. I apologise for offending you, and yes I have read the book, I'm a big fan of phantom of the opera, okay I'm sorry for offending you.
Some people really must have nothing better to do then vote people down just because they disagree with them - but I have yet to be proven wrong in what i said.
I'm actually part Scottish - if you must know. Most of the men, including my grandfather, on that side of my family come from hard-working, blue-collar stock. But, my grandfather has never spoken crudely to a single soul in all his life and is generally very respective of others. He is blunt, but never crass. The bottom line is that basically, not all Scotsmen act the way that Gerard and Billy do. End point. I'm sorry you feel the need to insult me to try to prove your arguement.

This is the most sophisticated interview I have seen Mr. Butler do. Mostly, he's either hitting on the female interviewers or he's talking crudely constantly - so this is refreshing. However, I do not care at all for the movie version that he did - but he did do his best, given the fact one of history's worst directors took control of this film. (Aka Joel Schumacher)
Why did I get voted down 6 times? Its true that Gerard Butler is a tremendous flirt and he himself said he does it. And let's be honest, he does talk crudely sometimes and swears often.
Actually, that's not true. I have never heard Dougray Scott say a crass word? (And he's Gerard's age) As well as the great Scottish actor, Nicol Williamson (famous for "Exacalibar" and "Return to Oz").
ok firstly, never heard of him so he mustnt be a great actor and Nicol Williamson (never heard of either) im assuming its a girl and women arent supposed to swear cause that not good. and ur only thinking of actors and stuff...Butler and Connelly we not brought up in the spotlight so they are just the average scottish men
Firstly, Dougray Scott was in "Ever After" with Drew Barrymoore, "Dark Water" with Jennifer Connoly, "Arabian Nights", amoung others. And secondly, Nicol Williamson IS a man, if you actually did your homework and looked online. He is a famous Shakespearean actor, but he's also known for doing films. Some of his modern work, that you may recognize are "Spawn" (1997), "The Seven-Per-Cent Solution", "The Wind in the Willows", amoung others. Next time, do your research before you make a remark.

I read somewhere, I think on IMDB that the director liked Gerard Butler's "Rock star" type of voice for the part rather than a more professional and clean sounding tenor.

His voice literally shook the theater. However, that doesn't take awaything away from the movie which I loved. I really wasn't critisizing Gerard Butler, I loved him, he brought tears to my eyes and he does have a very good voice, it is just that he doesn't have the range of a show singer.

There is almost a sculpture of him. You have to check the tail end of Monica Vizeu's video she calls "Tha Gra Agam Ort." He is absolutely a Greek god in that picture. You'll see.
omg he is so hot, AND HE DOES HAVE TALENT whatever idiot whoever wrote that, i mean have you heard his voice, and have you seen him act!!and plus super sexy!!
I agree with you. Especially because I had that problem until I was about 16. It's really friggin annoying when people can't seem to grasp how to say your name.
I know that guy that is interviewing Gerry. He is here in Texas on channel 8. he is the movie critic. That was so cool. Gerry is awesome. You gotta love him!!!!!
OMG thanks for sharing this is so beautiful<3.. He is definately the BEST phantom ever..:) it seems like i'm looking at the phantom w/out his mask...cOOl
So really this heated discussion is just caused by the frustration of unfulfilled expectations. Crawford fans wanted to see and hear what they were used to, but got something different instead. Doesn't mean that different is bad. Simply not what you like, that is all.
When it comes to the presence, I think here Crawford fans are just being spiteful. Butler's presence is mesmerizing! I couldn't take my eyes off him, and it's not even because he's goodlooking, since because of the mask one couldn't see the face properly. No, he does have a presence and he's very good for the role, far better than Travolta could have been, and although I like Banderas very much, I don't think he could be quite as sophisticated as Butler.
And here fantastic Crawford has been replaced with Butler. I think that fans revolted even before they heard and saw Butler in the role; the idea itself was unacceptable to them, and this prejudice played its role. And maybe Butler isn't a classically trained singer, but he pulls it off. It's only the real music fans who know in-depth what the range, volume, D-flat octave, etc mean, who can tell that he can't sing well. To me and millions of ordinary people he is awesome.
I've never seen the Broadway production, but I heard the recording where Crawford sang. What a voice! - no one can dispute that. But Butler is more than a pretty boy. He is very good as an actor; his pain is believable, his madness is scary, his obsession is right there. I completely understand Crawford fans: when something's been done and done so well and gained so many admirerers, it seems impossible to even think of changing that something a little bit.
i agree entirely with suzee2. Personaly, i didn't really like MC, but i guess whatever floats your boat...but i do love the broadway and 2004 movie and book with all my heart!
eeee! my favorite actor! i am so happy he was cast for this part. i mean, he brought so much emotion and pain to the phantom, the pain and emotion that was supposed to be there, pyshically and emotionally, and with his voice! gerard butler has the stage prescence as well. he is an amazing actor, he is so outgoing in real life and the fact that he could be so serious to be the phantom. he is gifted by God, and i hope he goes far.
No he's not married...yet....but the girl who marries him is sure gonna be lucky. I would say I want to marry him but he is more than 20 years older than me so it would be weird...well maybe not...lol!
Dear Ima: Seems to me Andrew Lloyd Webber, CREATOR of Phantom, would be capable of choosing the right man for the movie Phantom! Fairly presumptuous to think you'd know more than the guy who WROTE the opera! MC may have been the original, but never the best. . . (BTW, stage drama vs. movie = 2 entirely different acting requirements.) I believe ALW had the right idea--enhancing HIS story with a younger, more handsome Phantom to make the love triangle more believable!
Oh shut up Gerry. You know NOTHING of the phantom as a character. JXN764 I totally agree with you. If only i could reach out to these poor Gerry fans and show them the TRUE phantom of the opera. Oh my dear Michael Crawford, if only you would have been in the movie! *cries, then goes out to kill Webber*
We'el, JNX, I canna' agree wi' yer thinkin'! But you are entitled to your opinion! I "discovered" Phantom last January on HBO On Demand and have watched it about 150 times ever since then. Gerry is by far the BEST Phantom ever. He wasn't cast to be a lyric tenor--Patrick Wilson had that role--and he was AMAZING! What a voice! Gerry had the grit and the panache to be a GREAT Phantom! I think he's just wonderful and I think Joel and Andrew made a VERY wise choice in him!
Maybe they watched it because they expected it to be as good as it was on stage. And it didn't meet expectations. Everyone has their own opinions on who a good phantom is. Personally I also think the Phantom shouldn't have looked sexy either, and I think the person who played the phantom could have had a better voice, not that Gerard Butler was bad, but Michael Crawford is uncomparable (except for maybe to John Owen Jones who I LOVE as the Phantom.)
Gerard Butler completely ruined Phantom of the Opera. He is the worst singer I've ever heard. He was only hired for his looks, Phantom isn't supposed to be sexy anyway. This movie should have been made in 1990 with the real Phantom Michael Crawford.
He's not the best singer and not the best actor for the role, he was cast because he's marketable. How can he teach Christine to sing when he has no concept of musical theory. I don't blame Gerard for that, but Joel Schumacher was a moron. his reasoning behind casting gerard was "I didn't think Christine could fall in love with an older Phantom". The problem with that statement, the entire point of the play is that Christine DOESN'T fall in love with the Phantom.
awww...but Gerard Butler is too cute! How could you not love him as the Phantom! I think he was way better than if they had an older one! He has an amazing voice when he sang in there and I think they couldn't of picked someone better.
I agree that he is very cute, I loved him in timeline. But a role like the angel of music takes years upon years of lessons in singing. I've been training for four years now and I'm not ready to play that role (but I'm still a better cantidate than Gerry who can't hold a full volume note for five seconds.) He's much better at very tender roles, but he just doesn't have the presence to play Phantom. There were far more worthy cantidates out there. Like Colm Wilkinson!
Actually Christine did fall in love with the Phantom, but the love of her life was Raoul, and nothing could change that. She both loved and feared The Phantom.
Yes, but the directors wanted to make the characters appealing. Sorry, but Crawford is getting old and they need someone fresh with sex appeal. But I think Gerry has a very nice voice with a lot of emotion. I think he made Phantom of the Opera more successful.
'' Your Mum." hahah lol. I almost fell out of mt chair when I heard that.

I agree with you. Especially because I had that problem until I was about 16. It's really friggin annoying when people can't seem to grasp how to say your name.

No, he does have a presence and he's very good for the role, far better than Travolta could have been, and although I like Banderas very much, I don't think he could be quite as sophisticated as Butler.

i know wot u mean i couldn't take my eyes off of him either.and he is totaly gorgeous!

To me and millions of ordinary people he is awesome.
some1tookmynick 5 years ago
I've never seen the Broadway production, but I heard the recording where Crawford sang. What a voice! - no one can dispute that. But Butler is more than a pretty boy. He is very good as an actor; his pain is believable, his madness is scary, his obsession is right there. I completely understand Crawford fans: when something's been done and done so well and gained so many admirerers, it seems impossible to even think of changing that something a little bit.

i actually didnt know what this guy looked like until now my family is obsessed with opera and as for as singing hes pretty good

eeee! my favorite actor! i am so happy he was cast for this part. i mean, he brought so much emotion and pain to the phantom, the pain and emotion that was supposed to be there, pyshically and emotionally, and with his voice! gerard butler has the stage prescence as well. he is an amazing actor, he is so outgoing in real life and the fact that he could be so serious to be the phantom. he is gifted by God, and i hope he goes far.
o and thanx for posting this! :)

Dear Ima: Seems to me Andrew Lloyd Webber, CREATOR of Phantom, would be capable of choosing the right man for the movie Phantom! Fairly presumptuous to think you'd know more than the guy who WROTE the opera! MC may have been the original, but never the best. . . (BTW, stage drama vs. movie = 2 entirely different acting requirements.) I believe ALW had the right idea--enhancing HIS story with a younger, more handsome Phantom to make the love triangle more believable!
suzee2 5 years ago
Oh shut up Gerry. You know NOTHING of the phantom as a character. JXN764 I totally agree with you. If only i could reach out to these poor Gerry fans and show them the TRUE phantom of the opera. Oh my dear Michael Crawford, if only you would have been in the movie! *cries, then goes out to kill Webber*

Phantomangel2319 5 years ago
We'el, JNX, I canna' agree wi' yer thinkin'! But you are entitled to your opinion! I "discovered" Phantom last January on HBO On Demand and have watched it about 150 times ever since then. Gerry is by far the BEST Phantom ever. He wasn't cast to be a lyric tenor--Patrick Wilson had that role--and he was AMAZING! What a voice! Gerry had the grit and the panache to be a GREAT Phantom! I think he's just wonderful and I think Joel and Andrew made a VERY wise choice in him!

I TOTALY agree with you Suzee. xoxox Jamie
Jamiestest 5 years ago
If you think that, then why did you bother watching it?
june062 5 years ago
Maybe they watched it because they expected it to be as good as it was on stage. And it didn't meet expectations. Everyone has their own opinions on who a good phantom is. Personally I also think the Phantom shouldn't have looked sexy either, and I think the person who played the phantom could have had a better voice, not that Gerard Butler was bad, but Michael Crawford is uncomparable (except for maybe to John Owen Jones who I LOVE as the Phantom.)
bleedingrose195 5 years ago

The problem with that statement, the entire point of the play is that Christine DOESN'T fall in love with the Phantom.
a682451 5 years ago
awww...but Gerard Butler is too cute! How could you not love him as the Phantom! I think he was way better than if they had an older one! He has an amazing voice when he sang in there and I think they couldn't of picked someone better.
XmasqueradegirlX 5 years ago
I agree that he is very cute, I loved him in timeline. But a role like the angel of music takes years upon years of lessons in singing. I've been training for four years now and I'm not ready to play that role (but I'm still a better cantidate than Gerry who can't hold a full volume note for five seconds.) He's much better at very tender roles, but he just doesn't have the presence to play Phantom. There were far more worthy cantidates out there. Like Colm Wilkinson!
a682451 5 years ago
Actually Christine did fall in love with the Phantom, but the love of her life was Raoul, and nothing could change that. She both loved and feared The Phantom.

Yes, but the directors wanted to make the characters appealing. Sorry, but Crawford is getting old and they need someone fresh with sex appeal. But I think Gerry has a very nice voice with a lot of emotion. I think he made Phantom of the Opera more successful.
