  • Best weights I have ever owned and they have held up well (I have had them over a year with daily use). Perfect for P90x or Insanity.

  • Im getting these instead of power blocks cus they are 15 dumbbells in 1 since power blocks are 9 so it will save more money

  • @GreekGotSwag the sport 5.5 are actually 27 different dumbbells. I have a set and the are way better then the 552. and it quicker to switch weights with the power block. And it takes a lot more to break a power block. the ST552 break so easily if you are not careful

  • @TheDemonhunterfan Yeh thanks i changed my mind the other day i will be getting the classics at dickssportingoods

  • Just got the Bowflex 552's and was surprised the plates are a bit loose on the bars. I'm not used to dumbbell weights that flop around a bit when using them. Is there a way to make them more snug?

  • @Resistoon yes u can put something like very small quarks in between.i used a pair of tweezers on my brothers to tuck it inside.

  • @hoopgirl245 quark?

  • fuck you

  • fucking gay. go buy some pro style dumbbells from a gym going outa business. i bout a set of 20's thru 80's for $600. yah, its alot I guess but theyre fucking pro quality commercial grade steel and badass. these bowflex adjustable pieces of shit are pieces of shit.

  • @likeomgutube the point of them is not to be the best dumbbell out there, its all about conveniency and that you dont need 20 different weights

  • @likeomgutube yeah well not everyone has space for an entire rack or dumbbells the good thing about adjustable dumbbells is they take up alot less space. i wouldnt buy these though i bought the powerblocks.

  • dude nice guns. keep it up!

  • Plus the price for the weights and stand was iffy for me

  • For me, I like the concept of the Selechtechs, and when I tried them, I didn't get any issues and it was good. But the negatives that brought me to go elsewhere was the footprint was to wide, which made it hard to do proper form, once you get strong enough there is no choice but to use the same weight over and over(I was already doing 60 pound dumbbell rows) and you can't use them as pushups stands since P90X2 will involve these moves. At the end I just went with reg hex dumbbells. Lasts forever

  • @3lectrx Not at all, Thats just what all the sales people have told me. Maybe I typed it wrong lol.

  • first class professional review, I have just bought these weights and totally agree with your opinions.,exellent advice ! . thanks..

  • how much do these cost? and did you order these or buy them at a sporting goods store?

  • Thanks for the review, very useful

  • hey, thanks for the review. Why did you take down your website? Are you still working out?

  • hello, are they for sale on "wall mart"???

  • lol at an out of shape middle aged guy reviewing exercise equipment hahaha

  • ey man r u pinoy?btw great review.

  • does tyour bowflex weights like the weights shake alittle and sometimes doesn't turn ? what should i do ?

  • ablas mierda en los primeros minutos del video

  • Mmmmm guitars.

  • Got these thrown in for free with a bowflex machine I bought. Wasn't crazy about the machine, but these badboys were pretty good.

  • awesome i just got a pair but it sold for about $159 dollars for each made the mistake of buying them separately

  • Awesome, these things look good, but what's nicer is the fact that those Gibsons and amplifier are in the video too = )))

  • Kinda stupid, it's only like 105 pounds of weight but cost four times as much :/

  • dude if you pull them up and they hit, just do it one arm at at a time, is that simple

  • I am a personal trainer from Switzerland & use these for my clients. Its easy to transport in my car. JERRY-KADAVIL(.)COM

  • Those look like they are so wide they are going to smash your face. Tony says not to smash our faces, so...

  • Thanks for review, i own these and you nailed it

  • Ironmasters are better stand is included also.

  • @Black973000GTVR4 Agreed!I can change my IM'S faster than the selecttechs. And my power blocks are the best for p90x.I cant believe how people buy into blowflex after all these years.

  • If it weren't for the 15.75 inch width of the dumbbells (which is too long and would get in your way when you do some of the exercises) I would buy these without hesitation...

  • I have owned a pair of Bowflex 552, they suck. Too many pieces that can fail. Powerblocks are the way to go. I am selling my 50lbs powerblock and buying the 90lbs series. Powerblock is a little more expensive but the quality and ease of use make the money worth it over the bowflex ones. Powerblock size increases with weight. Bowflex size is always at maximum length therefore huge even when lifting light. Google image search for size comparison between a bowflex and a powerblock.

  • @20hobbsie keep the 50lbs and buy 90lb ones. 90 lbs ones go up with 10lb increments so when you want 5lb increments you have to take the handle off then take the weight out. To go from 20lbs to 25 lbs you have to take the pin out, take the handle out, unlock the handle, remove the internal weight bars, put the handle back, put the pin back in 30lb slot. It;s ok with regular work out but with p90x, its tough to change fast enough.

  • Bowflex sucks

  • they are ok but too light

  • great review really appreciate you taking the time.

  • thanks for this great review, this helps a lot! i noticed that the powerblocks are cheaper for the set of two, but then i noticed that they don't contain the heavier weights that bowflex does. i plan on being as fit as i possibly can, so i'm kind of interested in going for the heavier weights, hopefully wuldnt be a waste of money though lol

  • how are your 552's coming along so far? any damage to the dividers that separate the weight plates? I'm really close in purchasing them for p90x+ because on bowflex's website if you buy any dumbells you get free shipping and a free stand. But everywhere I go the 552s were defective wherein the dial couldn't turn or the plastic dividers broke. The long run and durability is what I'm aiming for and I'm really careful with my equipment.

    Thx for your review

  • @Necrid07 Powerblocks are the way to go. Bowflex, like you say are defective in that manner. My powerblocks are amazing and quite a bit smaller.

  • @20hobbsie Im glad you like the powerblocks. In my instance ever since my purchase of the bowflex dumbells I havent had any problems with locking or plates falling. I think its also the user that if you take good care of them and handle them with caution the problems wont appear. Everyone has their preference and for my choice I like the bowflex

  • you play guitar

  • fuck this aint nothing like old skool dum bells mine point dun deal

  • @babeboyp If you've got the big cast dumbbells and you do a chest workout.... 40, 42, 44, 46k workouts... that will cost £80 + £82 + £84 + £90ish...

Thats only for the high range.... not included the 14,16, 18,20 for flys..

Unless your on about manually building the dumbbells with the plates... then when you've got 2x 20k plates on each side of the dumbbell, then you end up with 2 massive dubbells which are too bulky.

Alright if your only pressing 20k i guess though.

  • @babeboyp you are rigth old school dumbells rocks new ones are good but not as good as old fashion

  • @Danieldx22 yep aint nothing like lifting old school wights lol i still do all ways will

  • I looked at the powerblocks and 2 things bothered me. hand size and that nerdy look. looks like a kid toy. would i like the bowflex 90s better?

  • Better and cheaper just to get a regular adjustable dumbbells if you are strapped for cash and cant get the normal dumbbells. Also the weight maxes at like 55 pounds or something.

  • i bet you got a chode

  • one more thing, too wide, eyecandy. Waste of money.

  • i prefer those cheap rusty adjustable with spinlocks. Cheaper. Your muscles dont care what your weights look like. Hell it could even be a backpack full of sand, and you could use that. All that matters is your body is getting worked out.

  • @pkhamidar2com

lol I believe the design is based on space which is the convience and it's all in one like the commercial says like what this guy has which he is acheiving..............by saving space...............all in one. LMAO

  • Enough about the dumbells. What guitars/amp do you use? How do they sound?

  • Nice collection of guitars, too.. I'm also a gutiar player and do P90x for the past 2 years... I'm a fan of using bands, but am considering buying these DB's... rock on bud!

  • way too wide

  • not recommended due to their width

  • does the p90x work for like 14yr olds??

    plz reply

  • Those dumbbells would be too big for me to do curls... but I do curls one at a time so I make sure I go slowly. You can buy those instead of a bunch of different dumbbells, and it's easy to get the weight you want

  • Very nice review, but the bowflex dumbbells are just too big. The power blocks would be the better choice, there more cheaper. They offer more weight, also there much more smaller. Bowflex would be the popular choice, but power block would be the smart choice!

  • @amen360 the iron master dumbbells are even better though and they lock in safer than the power blocks

  • shi shit i just find out there are plastic inside it scary me now to buy them, they are expensive as well, i think i just have to go with not adjustebelle dumbelles and forget it

  • @involverrrrr buy those cheap $5 adjustable handles at wal mart and start buying 5-10lb plate sets whenever you get extra money and you can rack up the dbs in no time. buy a few sets of those adjustable db bars and you can have a few sets all ready for drop sets and stuff like that too. you can buy some of those bigger 25lb plates that arent very thick and easily add over 150lbs on those db handles. they are safer to lock in and arent going to break like the plastics

  • preety good...gave me an understanding

  • Yeah i got enough with the bands lol, i think i will get a set of this for myself..

  • they are just too wide for me. I think when powerblocks patent runs out you wont see anything but the powerblocks style. I also couldnt get over how odd the contoured handle felt.

  • haha, the shoulder thing....

this dumbbells are a piece of shit, and you don't know jack shit about fitness. keep on the curlz, granpa.

  • Just be careful to make sure the dial is correctly on the number, not in between numbers, or the weight will slip off and break your tow, or in my case smash my entertainment section in my condo.

  • The stand is an extra $149. Not included with the dumbbells. Do you always have to re-rack them to adjust the weight?

  • I just got a set of Nautilus 552 used. It is a great set, would be nice if I could find a stand for it. I think the bowflex stand is a little different so I'm not sure if the Nautilus would fit on it.

  • Thanks! Im getting a set!

  • These are fine to the point of shoulder exercises and light bench exercises. But I have been shopping around and found the better reviewed powerblocks and certain models are expandable from 50ish to 100lbs. They are smaller and for about the same price, if not cheaper, the powerblocks will do what you need to do. Also I am getting them for p90x potentially, I would just like to incline, regular, and decline bench press with them.

  • Hmm, your adjustable seems different from mine, which I just found out is also called an adjustable dumbell, lol. Mine is those with the silver handle, two fasteners at both end. So each time, I have to remove the two fastener, and changed the plates, which I find it a little bit troublesome. Yours' pretty cool, since the plates just detached itself...

  • Wow, thanks for the video review. This is the first time I heard about an adjustable dumbbell. Btw, can you tell me, (1) is the dumbbell "plate" stable or sometimes, would it like get loose when you do intense workout? (2) If the dumbbell is wide, due to the design, did you find it a hassle when doing say, bench press? (3) Are most adjustable dumbbells that wide? Thanks, hope to hear from you! =)

  • @armyboy24 The plates are stable. As for doing bench press, the width of the weights are just fine. Most adjustable weights are a bit wide. The PowerBlocks may be a little narrower. Hope this helps.

  • @armyboy24 i wouldnt do anything with the bowflex that involves putting it over your head, mine has fallen off lots of times.. the plates are unstable

  • I just bought a set of these and one of them is already broken after my first workout with them. I already ordered a different pair of adjustable dumbbells from Titan. I would not recommend these.

  • This is a great review, I was worried about the width of them but It looks like they will be fine actually. Thanks.

  • hey much do they cost and do they come with the stand?

  • hey good tips for exercise but i dont like the way you force the dumbels up can you go a bit slower you will hurt your joints

  • @daleyy1234 hes not showing how to work out hes reviewing the kit, hes prob grabing lighter then he works with.

  • 52.5lbs was way to light for me so i went with the 1090s which go up to 90lbs each. I am pleased with it.

  • ohh i seeeee. very convenient but very big.

  • im confused.. is it 52 pounds on EACH side of the the dumbbell or what??

  • @treacy993 no. It's 52 pounds for the total weight of one dumbell. You just need to adjust both sides so that they will be equal. They do that so you don't always have to add up or mutiply by two each time.

  • Nice thorough review! Thanks!

  • I'm excited to get these in to help me with my 2nd round of P90X. I got them on sale from bowflex.com they had a 24hr sale a week or so ago. $240 w/ free shipping. Amazing!

  • The Power Blocks look MUCH better. Even though I like the "look" of the bowfelx the Power Blocks look like they will be much better for everything.

  • this muhfucka is rich

  • i wonder how much they cost...

  • just ordered mine yesterday. i cannot wait to get them during the week. i really hope to get the best results from these.

  • These things are AWESOME!!! I have the same exact pair with the stands. Worth every penny. I suggest if anyone is interested in buying these dumbbells, you might want to check locally on craigslist cause it's way cheaper than buying brand new. And if anyone is using these especially for P90X, then it's worth your money because you will use these almost every workout.

  • Great review mate!!!!!!!

  • I was looking at the power blocks but couldn't get past the nerdy ass look! Just ordered a set of these bowflex bad boys, can't wait!

  • @schmi278 - I think you will like them.

  • @schmi278 Bad mistake the bowflex dumbells have alot of issues I heard after a year or so the plates fell of and the dials started to get stuck.. Alot of companys discontinued selling those sets because of those issues. The power blocks are alot better because it comes with a fifteen year warrenty and are widely known as the best set of dumbells in the world. Go check them out at the store, you will see it is constructed ten time better than the bowflex.

  • hey man awesome review, i'm guessing the power blocks would be a better choice as they are way more narrower, probably a bit cheaper too.

  • @SirGodFatherDon - Yes, a lot of folks like the powerblocks. I think it comes down to personal preference.

  • PRS in the back.....im jealous!!

  • @8footpool - I love the PRS! It is a tone monster.

  • the bad parts about it. AGREE

I own dosho gym ...and these selectable dumbbells just like the selectech...are tooo bulky for many exercises.

  • How tall are you? I'm thinking of getting an adjustable set like that.

  • @Bertziethegreat - I am only 5'6", however, I am able to use the dumbbells. It would be better if they were a bit narrower. At this point I have gotten used to them.

  • Great review. Thanks!

  • Thank you for your honest and fair review. Not many reviewers mention the drawbacks. I am also starting P90X and it was important to know the limitations of these dumbbells with regards to the range of movement. Thanks again!

  • @SeisToes - Your welcome!

  • Hey, Thanks for the great vid. is it possible to use them and choose a wieght and all that without the stand?

  • @bak2reality - Yes, the stand is not necessary.

  • I ordered the Ironmaster 75lb dumbbells with super bench combo and extras from their website(pack #2). Cost me $858 with shipping_I hope they turn out great. It was an investment.

  • Too wide :/

  • I am Tony Horton and i dont recommend this dumbell for my program i recommend the Powerblocks sports instead!

  • @vincnet11 i bought the bowflex dumbbells for p90x. Why dont you recommend them?

  • Good video. Thanks. I just bought mine 2 days ago at an Oshman's/Sports Authority in Texas. They have a $25.00 off coupon on their website for the next day or two for any purchase over 100.00. Anyway, it took me about an hour to put the stand together taking my time. The bar in the middle of the stand is actually a towel rack. The stand has both feet or wheels/castor's you can use.

  • @defendingthekingdom - The rack is an awesome accessory.

  • @ProjectExercise Yes it is. I couldn't imagine using the set without the stand. It's worth the money.

  • man i just got mine from sears today got the floor model for 269 hell of a steal. hey man thanks for the review you can tell there working for your huge arms bro!

  • Wow, that is an excellent price! Best I have seen so far.

  • i tend to drop my dumbells a little to the mats depending on the position im in. sometimes depending on the weight its impossible to put them down as slow as one would like.

if i did this with the blowflex would they be able to take?

  • I would not try it with these, check out the new power block flex dumbells. I throw around my power blocks and the flex ones are supposed to be better. My friend broke his bowflex dumbells working out so I would not trust them plus the bowflex ones are so wide it is horrible.

  • @ateka82 I can't say I know about that really but in general you shouldn't drop any weights. Try to control how you put the weights down. Dumbell, barbell, exercise machine, anything. Consider that an extra rep. Works some of your smaller balancing muscles and helps you learn to keep proper form ;)

  • A tremendously useful review!!! Thanks!!

  • Hi Boomer! Thanks a lot for this detailed review of the Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells. That's the 552 model you were introducing, right? I consider to buy the 1090 model but I found out it's pretty difficult to find a retailer in Germany. I desperately need heavier weights. Marion

  • Actually, I can't find the 1090's here in Hawaii. Shipping from the mainland U.S. will cost me as much as the DB's. Btw, I have been watching your continuing P90X vids. Keep bringing it!

  • do you think someone whos reping 35s in curls should get theses ones or the ones that go up to 92.5

  • If you are reping out 35's in curls then the 552 is good enough. I am reping out 45 and it is working out great. Actually, a curling bar and a few olympic weights would be great to go big time heavy then flush out with the 552. That said, I would going straight to the 92.5 (1092) for other body parts. For instance, you will need much more to do dumbbell bench. If you reping 35 on dumbbell curls, you are probably doing way more than 52.5 on dumbbell bench press.

    Hope this helps.

  • oh okay thanks but i got another question also i dont really plan on doing any DB bench press unless its in the P90X vidoes cuz i just ordered them and i havent got a chance do start them yet

do you ever DB bench press in the videos?

  • There aren't any DB bench press in the videos. However, I found I was pretty strong with push ups so I began to substitute the push ups with DB bench. Btw, I did a video showing how to increase resistance for push ups using resistance bands Check out my channel and you will see it. I think it is titled "How to increase resistance for push ups without weights" or something like that.

  • I have the 1090s ande am pretty pleased there are a couple of exercise in which it is a little to wide, but i am really happy with them. I think that the powerblocks are also good too though...

  • i really don't understand why so many people love these bowflex dumbbells. I was very excited to get it until i tried it at the store, it was very wide as you pointed out in this video and it wasn't solid. I was doing curls and it was very wobbly, unlike a real solid dumbbell. The price is great, but it was too huge and wobbly.

  • I have apair Powerblocks 5.0 i wouldn't change them for anything, i just love them.

  • Great review. I am doing P90X as well and used your review before buying a set of adjustable dumb bells. I ended up getting the Power Block because of cost and the size issue you were talking about.

Thank you very much for posting this, it was very helpful.

  • glad i could help. enjoy the powerblocks and p90x.

  • I have to agree, its a great peice of technology from bowflex, how ever they need to do 2 things. posisbly for the next level up.

    1. make the bumbbell small length wise, posisbly when you select the wieght needed, the legnth of the bar is reduced.

    2. the dumbell weight limit needs to be increased past 90kg.

Would also be nice for bowflex to bring out the tech from this onto the becnh press bar.

  • Look into Powerblocks man they're way better. I had some SelectTechs and sold them after using the powerblocks once at a friends house. They're smaller (not as wide) and more compact and far more durable.

You also don't need the special cradle so if you take them on trip you only need to take the weights with you.

They're also easier to select weight (for the most part). There are 2 2.5 lb weight inserts per dumbell for selecting weights in the 2.5/5 increments.

  • Yes, I have heard good things about the powerblocks.

Btw, personally I don't see how anyone would consider SelectTechs or PowerBlocks as travel equipment, but hey, that's just me.

  • Powerblocks are the best out there!!! end of story

  • I have a question i just turned 16 and I'm about 150 lbs i was wondering do you think i should buy the bow-flex select tech that goes from 5 to 52.5 lbs or the new 1090 select tech that ranges from 10 to 90 lbs because i don't know if ill grow out of the older model in like 3 years time and then buy the newer 1090 model later.

  • Personally I would go for the 1090's if you can afford them.

  • i think i might opt for the powerblocks.

  • get the iron it lasts forever

  • Good point! If I had the room in my "Man Cave" I would do just that.

  • standard adjustable dumbbells dont take up much room they cost $300-$380 for 120 kg last forever and arnt a wierd size/ length. You figure it out

  • Ah... sorry I thought you meant regular non-adjustable dumbbells, which I wouldn't mind having. At any rate, I have used the Bowflex a lot and I haven't experienced any problems. Anyway, thanks for commenting.

  • are u showing the dials or the guitars lol

  • LOL! Playing music is definitely more fun than beating the crap out of myself!

  • I am drooling at your Guitar collection... Saw the Gibson, but were there two PRS??

  • I think the axes that happen to end up in this clip is a PRS McCarty, Variax 700 and an Ibanez Bass

  • how much are they

  • They ar expensive... I think I paid $349 for them. However, if you were to buy each dumbbell separately it would cost more.

  • If I had seen this video before yesterday I would have bought these instead of the Gold's Gym set. I chose them based on appearance but I would have liked the dial better than the slider. I haven't had a problem yet but the weights seem insecure to me. I am waiting for one to disengage and slice my toe off. =)

  • I had a chance to try out the Gold's set before buying the bowflex set. I didn't care for action of the sliders. They seemed to catch a lot for me. Of course, I am sure after one gets used to the action, it becomes easy.

  • i laughed at at 3:26 when you said you big tall guys will be ok.

    im 16 and im 5,7

  • LOL! I am over 50 and short!

  • i think its too big when u use that light weight they should have made those dumbells more compact

  • Thank you so much for this review. It made me go for Powerblock Sport 9.0 Stage I, instead. You just saved me a lot of frustration, by realizing how big they really are. Thanks again :) 5*****

  • Glad I could help. Enjoy the Powerblocks!

  • Is there any play between the weights and the handle? do they feel like one solid piece? good review

  • I don't have any play with my set. I have had good results with my dumbbells. They are as solid today as the day I bought them. I use them a lot. When I go through the lifting motion I don't hear or feel any movement between the plates.

  • nice guitars man!

  • Thanks!

  • Garbage dumbells. Knob wouldn't turn in one. Dropped a plate while lifting the other. Brand fricken new! Bought them at an AAFES store and returned them right away no problem.

  • Thanks for the informative video, also it was nice of you to use a good quality camera. I'm looking into these dumbbells right now since I have P90X. And I tried 'em at SportAuthority and didn't like how the whole mechanism works, also the handle and the whole size was kind of unnatural/awkward. I also read that these things are not built very tough and the locking pins can break.(safety hazard). I'm considering PowerBlock Sport 5.5 instead.

  • A lot of folks have had good experience with the PowerBlocks. I haven't had any problems with the Bowflex dumbbells. They are like new and the mechanisms are still solid. I have used them through two rounds of P90X and I continue to used them nearly everyday.

  • Good review. I agree, this buggers are quite wide. Because of that, I'm a little concerned about knocking them together, especially when using the heavier weight (I'm starting to use them in a couple days). Aside from that, the technology is fairly smart.

  • how much are these im feelin them, good review

  • I think I got them for $350. I know it sounds expensive, but if you cost out individual dumbbells you will find that the adjustable dumbbells are more economical.

  • thanks and yea definately i was looking at individual weights and they were like expensive just per each weight set, id rather buy these and get them all fo rone price, by the way have u ever looked at any of the other similar types of dumbells? I think that a few other companies sell dumbbells like the bowflex ones but the bowflex ones might be more money cuz the name, have u ever used those style universal dumbells from any other maker?

  • I looked at the "Gold's Gym" set but I did not like the way the weights are selected. I preferred the knobs to the sliders. All lot of folks like the Power Blocks. I have never seen them, but they seem like a great set of adjustable dumbbells too.

  • hello everyone i am selling a pair of the 1090 dumbells (90 pound ones).

they are in very good condition and i will also include a free dvd and booklet.

  • bowflex dumbbells are beaUuuUutifull!

  • great video!... can u give me advice on starting to play guitar? should i use book lessons, online lesson or get a teacher? how did u start?

  • Ha... guitar advice on a dumbbell video! Its cool though because I am a big guitar nut. However, I am probably not the best person to give advice about how to start. I can't read music. I play by ear. Actually, that is pretty common among guitarists. If you can afford lessons, that would be a good way to start. If not, then get a few books or search youtube for beginner tips. Sorry I can't be of more help.

  • thanx:)... how did u learn to play by ear... like i have my guitar infront of me and i donno where to start lol... do u just sit there and mess around with diffrent sounds or do u listen to a song and go part by part through songs?
