This is taught in my university's epidemiology courses. They show how people are so gullible and ready to accept miracles that they ignore the obvious. In this case, "Facilitated Communication" is set up basically with the purpose of giving closure to people, even though it's complete nonsense. It was proved to be nothing but the "facilitator" choosing the letters they THOUGHT the patient wanted.

This video is more convincing than others I have seen. In one Rom appears to be unconscious while his hand is manipulated. Why used footage like that when there are times where he appears to engage with his facilitator?

One major complaint was that the facilitator's hand occasionally moves too quickly. I assume she is helping complete words and the icons on the right of the board allow him to accept or reject a completed word.

There is potential for the facilitator to abuse her power...

@katieiswonderful, the re-ran the tests, really blind this time. Out of 15 tests, he got ALL of them wrong - not even close, not even once. They measured his finger strength and control and determined that he was incapable of even directing and pressing correctly, the keys even at a slower rate.

Look for the documentary "Prisoners of Silence" produced by the PBS program Frontline and you will see that this was totally discredited in the early 90's. It is on Youtube. This was presented to us in medical school when I was a student.

It may be difficult to diagnose somebody with locked-in syndrome just by clinical exam, but modern PET scans make it much simpler. However, no person I've seen in this condition was able to type that fast. See real story of JD Beauby communicating by moving his eyelid to choose letters and you will see how slow the process is. Also, this man moves his eyes and head differently from real locked-in syndromes. He may be conscious, but this keyboard thing is totally FAKE.

With modern computer systems - we should be able to rig up a system for him to type without a human in the loop.

Until I see this, or some evidence that the communication doesn't depend on a particular intermediary or two - I'm pretty skeptical of this case.

This is something that needs to be looked into. Some people are claiming that it is Facilitated Communication, which was apparently debunked years ago, and she ultimately is doing the writing (similar to an Ouija Board). I have not made up my mind yet on this because I haven't seen enough or heard enough real facts about this man. A test, like a double blind test maybe, would be able to prove what is really happening :/
