I'm only so-so on my knowledge of David Bowie (...and that coming from a guy who can name at least 3 different pieces of trivia for just about any group found on a "Classic Rock" station), but the song makes me think of Led Zeppelin's bluesy songs; with more ballad qualities though. I understand what you said about being shy and what you thot might change that. Being open and unshy here is safe because you don't have to see people react to what you do in real time. At school you are standing in front of someone and that is so much more vulnerable. You see them look at you or not look at you and that causes all sorts of internal feelings that messes up the ability to communicate.
