The first time saw this video when I was really a small kid (mind you, English is not my first language) and that time I really thought that the Archies group was actually the Scooby Doo cartoon! LOL
If only you old folks had been thinking in the '60's -instead of smoking dope and having sit-ins- if you had been broadcasting THIS to the Muslims we would not have the problems we have today. This would surely have rotted their fundamentialistical 7th Century brains into mello submission!
The first time I heard this song it came on a box of Sugar Crisp cereal and I was 6 years old...my brother and I would make our mother play this over and over while we danced and bounced all over the house...LOL!! good times :)
1969. A gold mine of awesomely great songs. Check out the hits of 1969. It will amaze you. Sugar Sugar... The #1 song that year. I remember, I was there. I was 12 years old. Wow. What a great time it was.
@PREZ150 Ditto...I may be 51 now, but every single time this song plays it whisks me back to the 60's. And yes, I got the record. Not my older brother. Younger, faster than he was I.
I remember these cartoons. They were TERRIBLE!!! The only reason a lot of people watched was for the band. The songs were great, and they kept the members of the band a secret for years. But the room itself was a disaster.
No you don't, that would mean having to choose between two girls that both are just unbelievable and equally gorgeous and apparently it has driven Archie so insane that he keeps imagining that he's been a teenager for decades when in reality he probably is in some psych ward and thinks all the other patients are the good ol gang. :P
I was 8 years old when this came out, and I loved it. It's still my all-time favourite pop song. And I still want a guitar-playing frog, and a kiss from that girl....
@fairgwen1 Yes. Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, in cartoon form, was introduced on TV in 1969 on "The Archie Comedy Hour." This video of "Sugar, Sugar" is also from "The Archie Comedy Hour" in 1969.
@Feathertailforever Filmation did not put freckles on Archie for the sake of continuity during animation. HOWEVER, they did give Sabrina freckles, which made no sense. The only time Archie was shown with freckles during Filmations animation of him was during the 1969 prime-time TV special, "Archie & His New Friends". Don Bluth was in charge of that one, and I guess he decided to have Archie with freckles then.
If you like The Archie's, you might like my bubblegum music podcast, Echo Valley. It's free and fun and we play The Archie's every week! Check it out on iTunes or Google "Echo Valley Bubblegum"! Thanks!
@CostanzaKramer1 There are several covers out there... Wilson Pickett did one in 1970. The Monkees thing is a myth... Jeff Barry, who co-wrote the song denies that it was ever offered to them... he says it was written specifically for The Archies.
Apparently, this song was meant for the Monkees but they were trying to be more alternative at the time so they refused it. So the producers "gave" it to the Archies!
@allaspinaband Jeff Barry, who co-wrote the song with Andy Kim, denies this; says it was written specifically for The Archies. There was another song written for The Monkees that had "sugar" in the title, and was refused by then, and it is believed that song is what causes the confusion about "Sugar, Sugar"... especially since Don Kirshner also said that it was offered to The Monkees. I'll go with the person that actually wrote the song.
@windsorbear It was called "Sugar Girl",as I heard it,and Kirshner was all too happy to give it them, but one problem..Nesmith took it off the turntable, and announced they weren't interested, which led to him Punching a hole in the Plasterboard Wall (It was at The Beverly Hills Hotel,BTW!) On top of that,Kirshner was celebrating a Belated Bar Mitzvah with his parents looking on in Horror! Some present,Huh?
Always liked the song from the get go; nice to see the video. For those not living in 1969 who might be missing the joke, the Archies as a group did not exist. They were studio musicians that recorded this song using the Archie comic book character for a name. Not sure, but I think that it was well before the cartoon show It was considered the beginning of "bubble gum" music that covered what the name implies. See 1910 Fruit Gum Co. and Ohio Express.
I'm 52 I remember never missing the Archies. And I remember getting this song in back of a breakfast cereal box when I was 9 it was a card board cut out record of Sugar Sugar.Good old days.
Now that's smackin' with sweetness. Kiss Americana goodbye. Like a cancer, liberalism has metastasized; Debachery and hedonism will permeate every demographic.
well actors did not write that go's to andy kimm Ron Dante and jeff barry that did song and toni wine u hear singin the ooh life is so sweet and Im goin make life so sweet!
