Absolutely. I'm STILL using this laptop over a year later and it handles not just Photoshop, but also Premier Pro CS5. (It will even edit AVCHD files ... slowly.)
I bought one! I been searching for a while for something like this. I wanted something netbook size but packed with a little more power. I am very surprised how fast this little proc can chug along.
I also want to include that I used pcdecrapifier to remove all the unwanted crapware that was included.
i'll be dual booting Win7 and Linux on this system.
By the way did Gateway allow you to keep the reviewed EC1430u in your video? I hope they did = )
Glad you like it. It really is quite a sweet little machine. Sometimes I wish it had a discrete GPU, but then that would have shortened the phenomenal battery time.
.
Like you, the first thing I do when I get ANY new PC is to remove all the preinstalled software. I don't mention it because it's a common thing to ALL computers we review.
.
In any case, enjoy and thanks for watching. (Gateway didn't let us keep it... but I bought one for personal use!)
hey, have you tried the newer LT series? (the lt 21xx series with the N450) If you have, can you review it? I can't seem to find a decent review for it.
Thanks for the comment... and if you've seen any of our CES coverage, it was ALL rendered on our loaner EC1430u. 1080p AVCHD video files all processed on a notebook the size of a netbook... not bad!
No... the EC1437 has the footprint of a netbook, but it has laptop power. (Hence the "UnNetbook" moniker) -- It does Photoshop, Word, AIM, Premier and pretty much anything else you can run on a mid-range notebook. (The video is a bit weak, so no gaming, but the CPU has plenty of punch.)
GREAT REVIEW. was helpfuul and convinced me that i made the right choice by purchasing the cherry gateway ec 11.6 inch. was unsure since it lacked an optical drive but it was not necessary.
**BUT I have one question..! What about the performance of the webcam b/c that is important to me. How many megapixels is it?How is the quality during video conferences? And how does it compare to other webcams such as iSight in the mac or motion eye in the Sony vaio?
The camera does 640x480 -- A bit on the low end, but pretty standard for non-HD videoconferencing. It doesn't compare to the iSight, but I've never used a Sony Motion Eye.
.
Bottom line: Integrated is fine for general use, but if you want quality video, go for an external USB camera like the Logitech Pro9000 (also reviewed on 'gadget').
my only beef with this review is that it boasts dual core and dualcore-speeds for startup times ect. on the first part of the review yet you stress the convenience of size comparing it with a netbook on the second part. The smaller version of the ec14 only comes with a single intel celeron processor which can be misleading for viewers
Thanks for watching and commenting. Lemme see if I can answer some of your concerns.
There are only two sizes of the EC series. The EC54/58 is the 15.6" 5lb unit, and the EC14 series is the 11.6" <3lb model.
The EC14 DOES come in CPU configs from a Celeron to the dual-core SU, but all EC14 models are the same size and weight, that is to say, they are the same size as a 11.6" LT Netbook.
Is this a good notebook to get? I really like the specs but there are not too many reviews on it. Im guessing because its Gateway but still. Is the quality good? Thanks.
There aren't many reviews because it's brand-spanking-new. I have VERY much enjoyed using the review unit. I mean it when I say that this is the UnNetbook -- It's small and inexpensive (relatively) but it has the power to do what netbooks can only dream of.
Gateway is letting me hold on to this one till after CES. I let you know how it fares to the rigors of conference work.
@gadgettts, Thanks. Cause it does seem like a great notebook for what Im going to be using it for. I think Im going to wait till CES to see what might be coming out, then buy the Gateway 1430u if nothing really impresses me.
I recently bought 2 gateway ec14s 2 months ago and i think it's a wonderful notebook/netbook! its really fast compared to my other netbooks(EEE900HA and 1000HE)
the only downside are the speakers they not very loud and the built in graphics card is not that great I get around 30-40 fps in a game like cs.. the bottom line is that its not for gaming =(. Overall, its good for multi-tasking with its dual core and 3 gig of ram & HDMI to watch movies on the biggies :D
I bought a gateway MD 2614u laptop last Feb and to be honest I wish I had bought a different brand of laptop. Gateway hasn't impressed me at all at least with the one Im using now.
I'm not sure that this netbook would change my thoughts about the gateway brand. Though this sounds like it's a really nice netbook.
Sorry to hear that you had a bad experience. I've had nothing but good luck with the Gateway laptops I've used, but I also understand that sometimes... things just suck. (I've also had GREAT experiences with m DELL laptops and I know that many have had horror stories with those.)
Can you really use this netbook for editing softwares such as Photoshop? I really need to know because I'm in search for a netbook like this.

can you upgrade the hard drive to SSD hard drive?
killingfield1975 1 year ago
killingfield1975,
Absolutely... it uses a standard 2.5" SATA drive. As long as your SSD fits that form factory, you're good to go!

This would DEFINITELY not be a gaming laptop. The use of integrated video pretty much nixes hard core gaming every time.
