@MezmerizePsycho I don't think so. But the MT-2 still a good pedal though. SOAD uses Mesas, I think. The Metal Muff is a condensed Mesa IV in a box needing only any clean channel.
Haha. I burst out laughing at the unsure face you pulled after saying "crazy death metal/ thrash metal sounds". Cool review. Have you heard any of the modified versions of this pedal?
brought one from Musican's Friend in the scratch 'n' dent online section as sort of a joke thinking it would be fun cheese & hear that it doesn't work well in a band setting, I'll have to set up a jam this summer to if that's really the case, my rig is fairly good, I leave my equalizer on the section on my MT-2 with the treble, mid-treble, mid-bass and bass set all the way to zero with the level cranked all the way and the distortion around 6 or 7. I recommend it to any hard rock/metal guitarist
Wouldn't buy that if you're going to play it in a band. It sounds well alone, but when you use it in a band setting, your solos "drowns" within the other instruments, no matter how much level you use
a pedal is a pedal. its out you play that counts. unless you have taken professional lessons for years you wont sound as good. guitar takes years of practice. as a drummer i know this. the metal zone is a great distortion pedal my best friend from high school recorded with this thing in 1998 when the whole hardcore scene was alive. i jammed with chris and let me tell you he could shred
can some one tell me why i cant get my marshal ma100 to stop feeding back and squeeling with this pedal or any pedal when i hace it turned up loud to play with the band
It all depends all the amp too. On my line6 spiderjam/clean channel this thing sucks. But then I put it through the clean channel on my crate shockwave half stack (350 watt head) and this pedal is just wicked. especially in drop d tuning
My guitar's only got one humbucker in the bridge position. Should I get this pedal or a Seymour Duncan for the bridge?I use an EH Little Bigmuff but it's too grungey. My amp's a FAL Kestral, you'll have to be old enough to know what that is. I like Iommi's tone...but also Karl Sanders!?
im trying to get an As I Lay Dying sound. i have a BC Rich and also a Dean Razorback V and a Line 6 amp can the metal zone mt-2 get me that clean metal sound or the metal core pedal?

Very good comment. I once read a quote from Keith Richards, someone had asked him the secret of great tone: 'The right guitar into the right amp' was his answer. Get the guitar and amp sounding right THEN add pedals if you need them. No pedal, no matter how good, will make a bad guitar and amp set up sound acceptable. G
No, I mentioned in the video that Im not a metal player. By the way, this pedal is very much the WRONG choice for a GnR tone. Slash used a lot less gain than this box provides. G
@ecgedsel i've had my mt-2 for about ten years, in that time i dont think theres a distortion/o-drive tone i've not been able to match, with that eq section, put in the time an you'll hit the tone, but yeah, turn the gain down. i don't even play metal, its just that versatile
@metalguitar1011 I'm pretty sure Boss is made by Roland, so in theory it would sound good, but in my experience, roland pedals are good, roland amps are only ok, and for metal, you'll want to go with a Peavey, Marshall, or Crate. Line 6 (from what I can tell from goofing witha friends amp) is a crap knock off of Peavey. Your guitar is also a big factor, ESP, Jackson, Dean and Schecter are the best for Metal (IMO) and then again, you're using a 5w get a 15 or bigger
@leonidas6326 my only advice for that is screw with the settings a little bit till you get the sound you want, and Also, Maybe try adjusting the level so that the sound kinda goes down a little bit.
I was wondering, if i could get a really good metal sound out of this amp if i'm using a Roland cube 20x and a ESP LTD MH-100QM coupled with this pedal? I'm looking for a Parkway drive sort of sound btw
The ability to adjust the mid and the mid frequency is what makes this pedal unique. It's bad rep is mostly attributed to people stuffing all the knobs to full. But really it's quite a nice pedal. But a bit hard to dial in a good tone in the beginning.
@fritosofdoritos I use it with an AVT-150, which is another valvestate option from Marshall, and it sounds fantastic with the clean channel. There are lots of unusable sounds - its quite hard to make it sound clear, but once you set your amp and pedal up right, it sounds super tight and meaty. You will want an NS-2 Noise Suppressor with it, cos it hums quite a bit, but its a great pedal all the same. Not so good to boost the amp distortion, but great with a clean amp, and nice with chorus too
@blondegraemey ive got a small 'Roland Micro Cube' which is only 2 Watt i honestly think its more. i went to the local guitar shop and asked about this pedal. they said it would blow my amp up :S
i want my guitar to sound like this but £75 is alot of money if its guna blow my amp up. do you think it will be ok since you said you have a small amp too?
As long as you don't run the pedal and amp on full volume you will be fine. If the speaker sounds like it is driving too hard then turn down a bit or back off the bass on the pedal. G
@sniperspikes I got to grips with it just fine. It's just a matter of taste - I found it had a harsh, fizzy voice no matter what settings I used. It is no match for the Blackstar pedal.
yep, the behringer UM100 pedal is good too (it is only a bit harsher than the Boss MT2), but you have to take good care of it (it is plastic, the pots are not "that" stable and are plastic too). I prefer Boss because of the rugged construction, soundwise they are not very different.
If you use the pedal a lot buy Boss, if you use it only sometimes, or only at home, I think the analog Behringer pedals (had 4 of them so far) can do the job.
the MT2 first came out in 1991, so imagine the music its centered around; thrash, late 80's hair metal, alternative metal etc. All very mid range heavy styles. People trying to go for modern flubby deathcore scooped sound or something probably need to get the ML-2 instead
i love this pedal its wayy way more versitile than the digitech death metal, and you can have some pretty zepplin and more punky sounds out of it! the basic setups they give you with the pedal all sound verry verry differant.
Hi1 I want to know the settings you are using in 2:14, 2:28, 3:10, 3:45 and 5:14? Thanks alot! You really show the power of mt-2!!!! Thanks for your pacience!!! It´s just because i am going to buy one of these and ilike very much of this settengs, so if it´s not a boder please.... oh, and by the way, nice playing!!! Thanks once again! XD
late 80s i came out im pretty sure, my dad hads an old guitar player mag (july 85 i believe) and there was an ad for it and boss sed it was newly released
Well... that would depend on your pickups and amp type. Typical strat pu's are designed to be very bright. High treble..low bass wise. So to run a hot distortion pedal like this through vintage style strat pu's may not sound good. If you have hotter picksups HS2/HS3 or Fender SCN, then yes.. would sound good. Also your amp plays a huge part. To play harder music you would need a more modern amp. Or at least an amp with a closed back to enhance the bass response.
Yeah all that heavy mid scooping sucks. Its drops perceived volume and in a live setting makes it very hard to sit well in the mix. I mean listen to And Justice for All..its very hollow sounding compared to MOP or Kill Em All, both of which had a nice dose of mid range crunch and body.
unfortunantly, I tried this, the metal core, and the Metal Muff....and I got to say, the metal muff really blew these two away. I've never really liked electro harmonix but this pedal is awesome.
If i'm right, this is a remake of their Heavy Metal series. Their ML-2 is more for the heavier, modern stuff. The MT-2 for more late-80's - early 90's metal.
I bought this pedal and I have to say I am completely disappointed! It has the worst metal sound ever! The only sound it is god for is like 80's rock. I set everything up right so don't think thats my problem. I even tried it through my tube amp too and it still sounded terrible. DO NOT BUY THIS PEDAL!
Hi do you still have the pedal ? I owned it once. It sounded good in the store when I tried it, but with a band, it was all wrong. Have you tried it with less distortion, and more volume ? Maybe part of an effects chain going in the back of the amp instead of the front, would improve your sound. I'm using Boss GT-6 and the Metalzone is in it to use. But it has too much gain for me.
This pedal is one of the most misunderstood and misused pedals out there. It works best when using 75% or less of the pedal's distortion coupled with a tube amp - especially right at breakup.
If you set your amp to scoop the mids and do it with the pedal too it is going to sound like crap, period.
Nobody understands that this pedal sounds like TOTAL shit. On a solid state practice amp. Thats where a lot of Boss pedals get their "bad" wrap. Kids using them on their crate combos with MAX BASS MAX TREBLE No mids. Boss dirt pedals are made for slightly overdriven tube amps... supposed to push it over the edge.
this one is better, i went into the musicshop looking for that pedal, and i saw this one and compared them and this one ha alot cleaner sound for it less muffelled and less reverb, but u gotta consider you really do get wat you pay for, yes this is doble the price but your getting double and a bit better quality
Im not sure if its the recording or not but to me it sounds very mushy and flabby? Then again im not one for extreme gain. Good videos mate, thanks for them.
People argue a lot over whether the Metal Core is better than the Metal Zone. But it all depends on what your role in a band is, the Core is for rhythm playing and the Zone is for lead
I've watched some of your videos and I have to say you need your own website. You always mix in some good humor and you're collection is making me jealous.
Seriously if the retards over at Gearwire can operate a website making shitty reviews where they highlight the warranty card of every pedal they review, then you can definitely do it.
Seriously tho nice review, and I saw somewhere else that all of your vids are with a Vox Pathfinder? You get some great tones out of a transistor amp.
Yeah, I do use the Pathfinder for most of these videos. It has a good basic clean sound and adds no colour to the effects. It's ideal for these reviews as it is small enough to sit next to the camera mic. G
´´Seriously if the retards over at Gearwire can operate a website making shitty reviews where they highlight the warranty card of every pedal they review, then you can definitely do it. ´´
lolol =DDD
you're absolutely right, graeme's reviews are waaaay better than the ones from the gearwire..seriously, they made every pedal sounds like crap
Its like my amp is not very good-fender frontman 65. My guitar is +/- its an epiphone and my mind i dont know :D but i think: If i had a better amp could i get a better sound? or What if i had another pedal? What's the problem??!
i have one cheap amp, from fender, and my guitar is Ibanez RG, the sound like zoom multieffect distortion, but my pedal is MT-2, how about your metalzone Configuration? how do i make my sound like metallica's own without expensive amp
graemey awesome as always bro. you did a great job of showing a plethora of nice tones out of it-however even you couldn't hide those super sizzly highs that caused me to sell that pedal. great job tho
This is the most versatile pedal of Boss, you might not believe me, but it can sound as anything you need, except overdrive. Hmm.. I'd buy this than a DS-2 or a PROCO RAT. I play Garage Rock and it sounds perfect, it's not a METAL-ONLY pedal as the people think it is.
I also play Indie and i just need this and a Ts-9, i don't need like 4 different pedals to get the sound.
I've had two of these in my playing life. sold the first one on a whim for a crappy guitar. And the sold the second one, as i dont really play this genre of music anymore. But this is a killer of a pedal, great EQ section, I bought a Digitech distortion factory (it was cheap) which has a model of this pedal on it. But to be honest, doesnt quite have the "balls" of the original.
Incidentally really love your demos btw :o) keep em coming!

It's the shite!!!!!!!!!! Freakin Metal Zone.
The sound is more suited for those detuned + 7 strings.

Sounds like you've got too much treble or too much gain. You could get a noise gate, but those cost money. Try these first:
1. Turn down the tone on your guitar.
2. Turn down the treble on your amp.
3. Get a longer cord and stand further away from your amp. Don't face it when you're not playing notes, unless you turn off the volume on your guitar.
4. Try using less distortion. At full band volumes, your tubes should be doing some of the work anyway.

this is a great metal pedal but the dual pots are god dam annoying i tried one and every time i moved the botom one the top 1 moved as well
mrkieranguitardude 2 years ago
then maybe the one u tried was faulty....i have the MT-2 and this does not happen with me!

+1 , i prefer sounds with more mediums and basses.
Storma95 2 years ago 2
Yeah all that heavy mid scooping sucks. Its drops perceived volume and in a live setting makes it very hard to sit well in the mix. I mean listen to And Justice for All..its very hollow sounding compared to MOP or Kill Em All, both of which had a nice dose of mid range crunch and body.
RNRDOLL 2 years ago
unfortunantly, I tried this, the metal core, and the Metal Muff....and I got to say, the metal muff really blew these two away. I've never really liked electro harmonix but this pedal is awesome.

this man is crazy thash metal or deathmetal fuck mt2 is a good pedal if you want to sound like 80,s music

The metal core pedal is SOOO much better than this. this one sucks, sorry guys
bigdavid351 2 years ago
I hate the Metalcore in comparison.
I wish the Metalzone had more Bass on tap do add lots of low end when going through a falt EQ'd clean channel
ExperimentalHaven 2 years ago
yea, thats why the metal core is better:)
bigdavid351 2 years ago
But why would they ditch such an essential control such as Midrange on a metal based pedal?
The metalcore has no versatility and in my opinion lacks a smooth lower midrange.

is this pedal good for songs by In Flames?

Buy the ml-2 it is heavier and way better
Voe0123 2 years ago
If i'm right, this is a remake of their Heavy Metal series. Their ML-2 is more for the heavier, modern stuff. The MT-2 for more late-80's - early 90's metal.

boss metal zone is the best!!!!
dannyy1414 2 years ago
I bought this pedal and I have to say I am completely disappointed! It has the worst metal sound ever! The only sound it is god for is like 80's rock. I set everything up right so don't think thats my problem. I even tried it through my tube amp too and it still sounded terrible. DO NOT BUY THIS PEDAL!
elrod69giggity 2 years ago
Hi do you still have the pedal ? I owned it once. It sounded good in the store when I tried it, but with a band, it was all wrong. Have you tried it with less distortion, and more volume ? Maybe part of an effects chain going in the back of the amp instead of the front, would improve your sound. I'm using Boss GT-6 and the Metalzone is in it to use. But it has too much gain for me.
Paladin19652007 2 years ago
I ended up putting the Boss 7 band eq behind it and it sounds amazing now. I can get insane sound of it.
elrod69giggity 2 years ago
I get the heaviest sound from this pedal when I boost the mids.
MMZen 2 years ago 4
This pedal is one of the most misunderstood and misused pedals out there. It works best when using 75% or less of the pedal's distortion coupled with a tube amp - especially right at breakup.
If you set your amp to scoop the mids and do it with the pedal too it is going to sound like crap, period.
TruckyNiggets 2 years ago 8
@TruckyNiggets Tru dat.... But ya know , it actually sounds pretty beastin' through a Fender Solid state amp.

Hi, were boss pedals analog when they first came out, and now they are all digital? awesome demo!

digitech metal master
julianmetallica161 2 years ago
Nobody understands that this pedal sounds like TOTAL shit. On a solid state practice amp. Thats where a lot of Boss pedals get their "bad" wrap. Kids using them on their crate combos with MAX BASS MAX TREBLE No mids. Boss dirt pedals are made for slightly overdriven tube amps... supposed to push it over the edge.

this one is better, i went into the musicshop looking for that pedal, and i saw this one and compared them and this one ha alot cleaner sound for it less muffelled and less reverb, but u gotta consider you really do get wat you pay for, yes this is doble the price but your getting double and a bit better quality
jimmy78yo 2 years ago
Im not sure if its the recording or not but to me it sounds very mushy and flabby? Then again im not one for extreme gain. Good videos mate, thanks for them.

if i was gonna buy an mt2 id buy a keeley modded one because there infinatley better

Wow.... I sucked with this pedal...... that sounded awesome man, I just couldnt get good tone out of this thing for the life of me
Taud 2 years ago
People argue a lot over whether the Metal Core is better than the Metal Zone. But it all depends on what your role in a band is, the Core is for rhythm playing and the Zone is for lead
ToaJoe 2 years ago
finally someone gets it. i personally like MXR and EHX distortions, but boss is good for starters.

You get some great tones out of a transistor amp.
samtay6 2 years ago 3
Thanks for the positive comments!
Yeah, I do use the Pathfinder for most of these videos. It has a good basic clean sound and adds no colour to the effects. It's ideal for these reviews as it is small enough to sit next to the camera mic. G

you're absolutely right, graeme's reviews are waaaay better than the ones from the gearwire..seriously, they made every pedal sounds like crap

mattandjeff 2 years ago
yes i own it too, but, sometimes if i looking for character of dist, there are 3 spots like multieffect's own, whats wrong my amp, guitar or my mind?
Yogaaaaaa 2 years ago
Its like my amp is not very good-fender frontman 65. My guitar is +/- its an epiphone and my mind i dont know :D but i think: If i had a better amp could i get a better sound? or What if i had another pedal? What's the problem??!
Keep rocki'n dude \m/

i have one cheap amp, from fender, and my guitar is Ibanez RG, the sound like zoom multieffect distortion, but my pedal is MT-2, how about your metalzone Configuration? how do i make my sound like metallica's own without expensive amp
Yogaaaaaa 2 years ago
I also have an ibanez RG. I recently found a cool configuration in the MT-2.
I will try to upload a video just to show you how it sounds.
If you like, i can send you the settings.
If you really want the exact sound, you will need a tube amp.
Take care
mattandjeff 2 years ago
ok man, thanks i will watch your video, coz i found some problem in Eq,
wow, thats all are expensive, but i think marshall is still oke.

graemey awesome as always bro. you did a great job of showing a plethora of nice tones out of it-however even you couldn't hide those super sizzly highs that caused me to sell that pedal. great job tho

Thanks for upload this!
GusTheSkank 2 years ago
I've had two of these in my playing life. sold the first one on a whim for a crappy guitar. And the sold the second one, as i dont really play this genre of music anymore. But this is a killer of a pedal, great EQ section, I bought a Digitech distortion factory (it was cheap) which has a model of this pedal on it. But to be honest, doesnt quite have the "balls" of the original.
Incidentally really love your demos btw :o) keep em coming!
